Maine Public News Connect adds Somali to its language repertoire

New Mainers across Maine have different levels of access to reliable information about what is taking place in the immediate world around them, whether they be pressing public health issues, school closures, or any variety of important news. This has never been more apparent than during the COVID-19 crisis. This is why Maine Public launched Maine Public News Connect – Maine Public news translated each week into Spanish, French, Portuguese, and, as of late June, Somali. This video series presents important news stories from the Maine Public News team each week, translates them, and then makes them available on Maine Public’s website, our YouTube Channel, and our Facebook page. While this is a “test” project running into the fall, it is Maine Public’s hope that this series can be funded and continued for the foreseeable future. We encourage all our members to take a look at this vital project and help us spread the word that it is available today to new Mainers across the state. This news initiative was designed with the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition particularly with the help of PresentMaine, Gateway Community Services Maine, Congolese, and Angolan communities of Maine and through a partnership with Amjambo Africa. Support for the project has come from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation, cPort Credit Union, Lee Auto Malls, and St. Joseph Healthcare. Additional support has been provided by the Maine Health Access Foundation. I

In Canvasing the World on the Create channel – Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m., 5:00 and 11:00 p.m. – Southern California painter Sean Diediker travels to natural, spiritual and countercultural sites around the world to explore the interplay between painting and the human condition. He paints a work per episode inspired by the stories and ® perspectives he has encountered. I

July 2021 Experience | 9 Thank you for your vehicles!

Maine Public’s inaugural “Spring Cleaning Doesn’t Just Happen” Vehicle Donation Campaign just ended, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We nearly doubled the number of vehicles donated to Maine Public that we usually receive each April and May – nearly 150 vehicles! How did this happen? Top of the list is the generosity of you – our listeners and viewers – who always go out of your way to support the station. You know that donated cars and trucks make a big difference here at Maine Public. Two wonderful partners joined us in this endeavor – Paris Autobarn of South Paris sponsored the entire campaign and helped make it work and Rob and his team at the NAPA in Westbrook aided with securing our campaign incentives. Thank you to both of these businesses for their support! And… we accept cars all year long! Have a car or truck that you no longer need or want to repair? Give us a call at 877-672-6644 and we’ll tow away your car or truck for free, and you may receive a tax benefit. I The 24th Maine International Film Festival takes place this month!

Quite a treat awaits Maine moviegoers this month. The Maine International Film Festival (MIFF) will be held from July 9 to July 18 at the Railroad Square Cinema and the Waterville Opera House in Waterville, the Skowhegan Drive-In Theatre in Skowhegan, and online. Among the Festival’s programming highlights are several world premieres, three Maine features, two rounds of Maine-made short films, and an anti-racist photography and projection project.

The festival’s popular Maine Shorts program will be shown as two individual programs. “This was a great year for submissions from Maine filmmakers, which is why we decided to split the Maine Shorts program into two installments,” said Mike Perreault, Executive Director. “Each installment is amazing on its own, but it’s even better to watch them both.”

Full and partial festival passes are now available to purchase online at MIFF.org. Maine Public members receive a special discount. All venues will operate at full capacity in accordance with Maine CDC guidelines for the COVID-19 pandemic. MIFF is a project of the Maine Film Center and is made possible by presenting sponsors Waterville Creates, Colby College, and the Lawry Family Foundation. I The MidCoast Film Fest Is Alive and Well

The Lincoln Theater in Damariscotta is pleased to host, for the second time, its own film festival, the MidCoast Film Fest, happening Friday, July 23, through Sunday, July 25, and Maine Public is excited to be a media sponsor of this experience. The MidCoast Film Fest includes original movies, long and short, narrative and documentary that are based on a true story or events. With 100+ submissions from a diverse 16 countries for its second season, from biography to historical fiction, it is where history comes to life.

Opening night of the 2021 festival will feature a reception and a program of shorts by Bob Krist, a longtime photographer for National Geographic. Mr. Krist will be joining in the festivities for a post- screening discussion to help kick-off this year’s festival. The Mid- Coast Film Fest will be held at the historic Lincoln Theater where movies have been showing since the early 20th century on one of the largest screens in the state. The theater has recently gone through extensive renovations, seats over 200 people and sits smack dab in the middle of beautiful downtown Damariscotta.

For additional festival information, visit MidCoastFilmFest.org. Tickets may also be purchased in advance through the Lincoln Theater website at LincolnTheater.net. I
