Billy Bob Thornton Interview
A Conversation with Billy Bob Thornton by Frank Goodman Puremusic 1/2002 I had known that Billy Bob was slated to star in the new Travis Tritt video, “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde.” Brother JB is our publisher, and he and my brother-in-law Gary Falcon manage Travis, so I’d been privy to the video developments. Everybody was up about it, it was obviously not going to be your average Country video. It doesn’t take much to get me to pack a suitcase and go almost anywhere, my gypsy ways never changed. So when it occurred to JB that flying me out to L.A. might land us a Puremusic interview with Billy Bob Thornton about his new record, I was basically in the air. I didn’t mind waiting for JB to turn up at LAX a couple of hours after me, I was engrossed in Ann Patchett’s The Magician’s Assistant, and having a big time. We got out to the high desert location, outside Palmdale. There’s an old abandoned little motel out there called The Four Aces, it’s used exclusively for videos and movies today. The desert’s funny like that. Something goes out of business, they just leave it there and walk away, let the elements have at it. I took some pictures of this old Spanish-style mortuary, I liked the sign that said “Open.” I really enjoyed the record, Private Radio. I know, we don’t usually cotton to records by actors. Visions of William Shatner singing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” or the shocking crooning of Jim Nabors comes to mind. -
Once Upon a Time … in Santa Clarita: Tarantino Movie Opens Thursday
By: Caleb Lunetta, July 25, 2019 Once Upon a Time … In Santa Clarita: Tarantino movie opens Thursday Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino is known for his genre-defying blockbuster films that combine elements of art house, violence and comedy in his Academy Award-winning films. And the San Fernando Valley resident calls Santa Clarita “a special place,” according to local film property owners who have played host to the luminary for his latest film that debuts tonight, “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.” The latest installment in the Tarantino filmography follows the story of “a faded television actor and his stunt double (who) strive to achieve fame and success in the film industry during the final years of Hollywood’s Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles,” according to IMDb.com. The film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Tarantino and movie fans were given a teaser trailer where the opening shot was that of Melody Ranch’s “Main Street” set. Veluzat said that the production team had been working with the studio for a couple months, from planning to setting up to filming, and for him, it was a special experience. Tarantino has filmed two of his last three movies at Melody Ranch in Newhall, according to studio manager Daniel Veluzat, and he’s praised the SCV in interviews and conversations with local residents. He really does like it here, said Veluzat, in reference to a question about why Tarantino has filmed his movies at Melody Ranch. “He calls it a special place,” he said. And on Thursday night, “Once Upon a Time” opens in theaters across the country, including the Santa Clarita Valley, featuring scenes shot at both Melody Ranch and the Saugus Speedway. -
Homage to Piero Tosi (Costume Designer)
The Scenographer presents Homage to Piero Tosi (costume designer) When I arrive at the Gino Carlo Sensani costume department accompanied by a student of the National School of Cinema, it does not in the least surprise me that Tosi receives me whilst keeping his back to me, intent on making some adjustment to a student’s problematic sketch. He pronounces a rapid greeting then lets pass a perfect lapse of time, neither too extended nor too brief, before turning to face me. Thoroughbred of the stage and screen, director of himself and in part an incorrigible actor, with an acknowledged debt to Norma Desmond and to those who still know how to descend a staircase with an outstretched arm on the banister, prompting those in attendance to take off their hat. I have known Pierino for many years, less in person, more through the words and the verbal accounts of Fellini, which almost never coincided with those of Tosi, yet traced a portrait with indelible colours. There is also a vague suggestion of witchcraft, from the moment in which the man ceased to change, neither from within nor from without. No sign of ageing, of the passing of time, preserved in a bubble of glass. Immutable, this is how Pierino Tosi appears to me, though he has no need of these compliments, neither does he fish for them, with always a foot placed on that shadowy line beyond which it is so easy to vanish, to fade away. Our mutual long-term acquaintance with Fellini draws us inevitably back to that climate. -
