Georges Devereux, a Hungarian Jew, moved to Paris in the mid 1920s. Following a short JIMMY P. (Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian) tells the story of the encounter and period of scientific study (notably with Marie Curie), he dedicated himself to ethnology and developing friendship between two men who would never normally have met, and anthropology. A contemporary of Claude Levi-Strauss, who was at the time conducting his who appear to have nothing in common. Together, they embark on an exploration first studies of Amazonian natives, Devereux decided to make North America his preferred of Jimmy’s memories and dreams, an experiment they conduct like a couple of detectives, area of study. and with an ever-growing complicity. Thus he relocated to the U.S.A. where he decided to specialize in the study of the Mojave Indians, spending long periods of time among them and making their customs the subject of his doctoral thesis. His observations went beyond strict sociology and his interest in the psychiatric and psychological issues observed in this people began to grow. By the time he joined the Topeka Winter Hospital Devereux already had several hospital researcher posts to his name. This military hospital - recreated for the film - was one of the first in America to treat war veterans suffering from psychological disorders. Thanks to his willingly rebellious nature, Devereux‘s reputation remains anarchic and controversial, that of a kind of outlaw in the scientific community – “too Freudian for the anthropologists, too ethnological for the psychoanalysts, not enough of a psychiatrist for mental health practitioners”, as Elisabeth Roudinesco describes him in her preface to Reality and Dream. After his death, Georges Devereux’s ashes were taken to Parker, the Mojave Indian reservation in Colorado, in accordance with his wishes. "One day," he told his collaborator, Professor Will Brooker, "when people talk about Steve McQueen, I am going to be the first person they think of." Now, with an Oscar for his film 12 Years a Slave, the transition from Turner prizewinning artist to celebrated director has been made in style. It is a path to cinematography also taken by the British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, nominated for a Turner prize in 1998 and now editing her high-profile film of the erotic bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey. Next month will see a further reminder of the link between the film industry and the rarefied contemporary art world, a link that has existed since the Lumière brothers first projected images on to a screen. Julian Schnabel, the American artist and film-maker, is to stage his first art exhibition in Britain for 15 years. "The connection between visual artists and film might seem obvious, and Schnabel is successful in both, but it is amazing how many good artists there are who have not made good films," said Tim Marlow, who was appointed head of exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts last week.

    GARDIENNE DE LA MÉMOIRE Depuis la disparition de Ruiz, Valeria Sarmiento poursuit le travail du compagnon de sa vie. Elle dirige Les Lignes de Wellington (2012), projet interrompu par la mort du cinéaste où elle esquisse l’art de la guerre à travers la figure du duc de Wellington, commandant en chef des armées portugaise et britannique, un général obsédé par son image. Remodelant le projet initial, elle s’étend sur la manière dont les guerres napoléoniennes bouleversent les géographies – paysages et visages – insistant sur l’empreinte que laisse la guerre dans les rapports entre les hommes. Comme un dernier salut des membres de la « troupe » de Ruiz, certains acteurs viennent rendre hommage (Melvil Poupaud, John Malkovich, Chiara Mastroianni, Michel Piccoli, Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert), le temps d’une apparition mémorable, au réalisateur. De même, en l’attente de la mise en production de VALERIA SARMIENTO VALERIA son adaptation du roman de Roberto Bolaño (La Piste de glace), Sarmiento dirige Le Cahier noir (2018), une préquelle des Mystères de Lisbonne de Ruiz (2010), laissée à l’état de projet par le scénariste Carlos Saboga. À nouveau, Sarmiento infléchit le feuilleton d’origine, s’écartant de la figure protéiforme d’un cardinal mystérieux pour se concentrer sur les rapports entre le jeune Sebastian et sa nourrice, incarnée par la sensuelle et ardente Lou de Laâge. Mais la réalisatrice intervient aussi comme mémorialiste, sauvegardant et per- mettant la projection des films de Ruiz. Telle Isis en quête du corps d’Osiris, elle remembre certains des très nombreux projets inachevés comme cette Telenovela errante (1990-2017), feuilleton erratique qui enferme en plusieurs sketches les premières impressions, vivaces et drôles, du réalisateur lorsqu’il a pu tourner à PROGRAMMATION Amelia Lopes O’Neill nouveau dans son pays, ou encore son mythique premier film inachevé, El Tango del viudo (Le Tango du veuf, 1967).
