New on Blu-Ray You Don't Mess with the Zohan Disco- and Hummus-Loving Zohan (Sandler) Is the Israeli Army's Best Weapon New On Blu-Ray You Don't Mess with the Zohan Disco- and hummus-loving Zohan (Sandler) is the Israeli army's best weapon. He can single-handedly take out terrorists and swim like a dolphin, and still find time to charm the ladies. But this lethal weapon is tired of fighting Palestinian terrorists like the Phantom (John Turturro). He has bigger dreams: he wants to cut and style hair. Unfortunately, once Zohan arrives in New York City with a new look straight out of the 1980s and an assumed identity after fak- ing his own death, his lack of experience gets him laughed out of salon after salon. Finally, Dalia (Emmanuelle Chriqui), a Palestinian salon owner, gives him a shot, and the older patrons love him. But just as Zohan is hitting his stride, Salim, a Palestinian New York City cabbie (Rob Schneider) rec- ognizes him, and suddenly the Zohan's dream is in jeopardy. To confuse matters more, there is a Trump-like developer (Michael Buffer) who is trying to clear out the Manhattan neighborhood where Israelis and Palestinians peacefully coexist in order to build a mall. A bulked-up Sandler is amusing as Zohan, and this is Schneider's best performance in years. Despite the extreme stereotyping, there is an underlying message about the futility of war and fact that people really are, after all, just people. The film is peppered with brief appearances from a menagerie of celebrities, including Chris Rock, Dave Matthews, Charlotte Rae, Kevin James, John McEnroe, Mariah Carey, George Takei, and Bruce Vilanch. Lainie Kazan and Nick Swardson also star in this film as a mother and son who befriend the new immigrant. Sony Rest Stop Don't Look Back Hillbillies in trucks attack attractive young city-slickers, once more, in this sequel to 2006's Rest Stop. A year ago, young lovers Nicole and Jess (Julie Mond and Joey Mendicino) ran away from home and have yet to return, prompting Jess's brother and his friends to set out on a sweeping search for the couple. What the friends don't bargain for is a run-in with a mur- derous madman. The crazed psycho, it seems, might well be responsible for the disappearances of Nicole and Jess and could potentially become the catalyst for their own undoing. This raw and uncut film is a follow-up to the shocking smash! Totally twisted extras included deleted scenes, alternate ending, mythology featurette, and commentary with writer/producer John Shiban & director Shawn Papazian. Warner Otis is a story of suburban America gone haywire. In the midst of a serial abductor/killer's rampage, a beautiful young teen, Riley Lawson (Ashley Johnson), goes missing. When her desperate parents, Will and Kate (Daniel Stern and Illeana Douglas), are contacted by her kidnapper, an insufferable FBI Special Agent (Jere Burns) takes charge of the case. But, from deep within the psychopathic subter- ranean world created by Otis (Bostin Christopher), Riley turns the tables on her tormentor, manages to escape and to contact her parents. But her freedom is just the beginning of the gruesome, and oddly hilarious, downward spiral her family takes when they decide to get even with her abductor. It's a twisted ride that will leave audiences torn between laughing and covering their eyes. Additional Release Material: Alternate Scenes Alternate Ending (w/Introduction), Audio Commentaries Tony Krantz, Director; Erik Jendresen Screenwriter, Behind the Scenes "The Twisted World of Otis", Featurettes "Suite 16", Trailers Raw Feed Previews. Warner Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl is a swashbuckling high-seas tale directed by Gore Verbinski. When Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), an eccentric rogue, arrives at Port Royal, he barely avoids going down with his ship. Soon enough, he's in the market for a new one, but not before he saves the life of Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), the beautiful daughter of the governor (Jonathan Pryce). This act of bravery sets into motion a sweeping adventure involving Elizabeth's childhood friend, blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom); a mysterious medallion; and a legendary pirate ship, the Black Pearl. The Pearl's mottled Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) wants Elizabeth's doubloon necklace, and when she's kidnapped by the ol' salty dog and his crew, Sparrow and young Will must rescue her and find out the truth behind the ship's curse. Buena Vista / Disney Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest The second part of a trilogy, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a fantastic tale of pirates, love, and the supernatural. Blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and his upper-class love Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are preparing to wed when they are confronted with a warrant for their arrests because they helped the notorious pirate Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) escape the authorities. Their only choice for a pardon is to find Jack and return to Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander) with the flamboyant captain's compass. Will's attempt to track Jack down, however, becomes an adventure unto itself: Jack is being held captive on an island where the natives think he is a god. To make matters worse, the infamous Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his Flying Dutchman crew are after Jack, seeking his soul to repay a debt. With his beard of tentacles and a lobster claw for a hand, heartless Jones is no mere mortal. He and his men are slow- ly evolving, taking on the attributes of various sea creatures, and with the help of a giant sea monster, the Kraken, they rule the waters. Seeking respite from his fate with Davy Jones, Jack enlists the aid of Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), a practitioner of the supernatural, in an effort to locate the Dead Man's Chest that supposedly contains Jones's still-beating heart. Whoever possesses the heart controls Jones, and thereby controls the seas. And so the adventure continues as Jack, Will, and the Black Pearl crew track down the Flying Dutchman in search of redemption. Buena Vista / Disney Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End After the action of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, anti-hero Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is trapped in the netherworld of Davy Jones's locker. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) has returned from the dead to aid Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) in their quest to rescue the beloved captain. They journey to Singapore to ask for help from notorious pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat), and with this new alliance, they travel to the edge of the earth to find Jack. Then they will join forces with the world's most pow- erful pirates to unite against Lord Brackett (Tom Hollander) and the East India Company. AT World’s End is an exercise in excess, boasting a running time of nearly three hours and a labyrinthine map of double- and triple-crosses. Characters return from the dead and change allegiances with ease, thanks to the magic of Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris) and the pirate code of ethics--or lack thereof. Though the third film in the series is filled with action and special effects befitting any blockbuster, it's the per- formances that make the movie memorable. Depp has earned an Oscar nod for his role as Jack, but he's not the only one who shines. With Jack locked away, the film sits on the strong shoulders of Rush, as well as Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill and the brilliant British actor Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. This 2 DVD limited edition set includes the film plus an in-depth, epic adventure in its own right with insights and revelations that will blow you away including on set with Depp & The Rock Legend, bloopers, deleted scenes, Tale of Many Jacks, anatomy of a scene, masters of design, world of Chow Yun-Fat, inside the Brethren Court, music of Hans Zimmer, and Hoist the Colors. Buena Vista / Disney Night Watch The first part of a trilogy, Night Watch is an old-fashioned good vs. evil parable that relies on some thoroughly modern special effects to ensnare its audience. Set in present-day Moscow, the movie begins with a quick skip back through the centuries to inform us how a delicate truce was struck between the forces of Light and Dark. These forces still exist in Moscow, with both sides keep- ing a close eye on each other as they attempt to disguise themselves from the earth's mere mortals. Night Watch's central character is Anton Gorodetsky (Konstantin Khabensky), who is defined as an "Other" by the legions of Light and Dark. Anton and his cohorts live as vampires, and await the arrival of a virgin who will announce the resumption of hostilities between the forces of Light and Dark; as the film progresses, it becomes apparent that an epic battle is just around the corner. In this 2004 Russian film, the forces that control day and night battle against each other; with English subti- tles. Bonuses: commentaries, featurettes, deleted scenes, extended ending, stills galleries. Warner Day Watch Anton (Konstantin Khabensky) finds himself in the middle of a mythic conflict between the forces of Light and Dark in this sequel to Night Watch, the surprise 2004 hit from Russia. To pro- tect his son, who has come under the control of the dark side, Anton must seek an ancient artifact. But the powerful relic threatens to upset the uneasy peace between the two sides and puts Moscow at risk for a devastating cataclysm in this supernatural thriller.

  • The Case of Donald J. Trump†
THE AGE OF THE WINNING EXECUTIVE: THE CASE OF DONALD J. TRUMP† Saikrishna Bangalore Prakash∗ INTRODUCTION The election of Donald J. Trump, although foretold by Matt Groening’s The Simpsons,1 was a surprise to many.2 But the shock, disbelief, and horror were especially acute for the intelligentsia. They were told, guaranteed really, that there was no way for Trump to win. Yet he prevailed, pulling off what poker aficionados might call a back- door draw in the Electoral College. Since his victory, the reverberations, commotions, and uproars have never ended. Some of these were Trump’s own doing and some were hyped-up controversies. We have endured so many bombshells and pur- ported bombshells that most of us are numb. As one crisis or scandal sputters to a pathetic end, the next has already commenced. There has been too much fear, rage, fire, and fury, rendering it impossible for many to make sense of it all. Some Americans sensibly tuned out, missing the breathless nightly reports of how the latest scandal would doom Trump or why his tormentors would soon get their comeuppance. Nonetheless, our reality TV President is ratings gold for our political talk shows. In his Foreword, Professor Michael Klarman, one of America’s fore- most legal historians, speaks of a degrading democracy.3 Many difficulties plague our nation: racial and class divisions, a spiraling debt, runaway entitlements, forever wars, and, of course, the coronavirus. Like many others, I do not regard our democracy as especially debased.4 Or put an- other way, we have long had less than a thoroughgoing democracy, in part ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– † Responding to Michael J.

To unravel the geologic history of Florida and Tampa Bay, Hine dug back over 700 million years. His surprising results have been documented in his book, The Geological History of Florida – the Major Events that Formed the Sunshine State, and an award-winning multi-media project, Tampa Bay Water Story, produced by Katy Hennig, MA ’16. “In one of our projects, we discovered buried freshwater lake sediments in Tampa Bay,” Hine says. “From about 20,000 years ago to about 10,000 years ago, Tampa Bay was partly a freshwater lake. The best record of early humans in Florida, what they ate and how they lived, is right there slightly beneath the seafloor of the bay.” Hine, who specializes in geological oceanography, collects and uses fossils to help tell the story of Florida’s land and water. “Our appreciation for beauty helps remind us of the importance of protecting our natural environment,” he says. Adam de Beer February 2014 ii Abstract This thesis develops an understanding of animation as transgression based on the work of Christopher Jenks. The research focuses on adult animation, specifically North American primetime television series, as manifestations of a social need to violate and thereby interrogate aspects of contemporary hetero-normative conformity in terms of identity and representation. A thematic analysis of four animated television series, namely Family Guy, Queer Duck, Drawn Together, and Rick & Steve, focuses on the texts themselves and various metatexts that surround these series. The analysis focuses specifically on expressions and manifestations of gay sexuality and sexual taboos and how these are articulated within the animated diegesis.

The Fifth Simpsons Packet Toss-Ups 1. The Simpsons' first Emmy win for Outstanding Music and Lyrics in 1997 came for "We Put The Spring In Springfield". It's second came one year later, with a song that involved no traditional Simpsons cast members. It is, however, a relatively elaborate number - moving from Los Angeles to elsewhere in California - all while never leaving New York. Oh, and it also involves strapping down Liza Minelli. For ten points, name this song, a key feature of the Broadway play "Kickin' It". ANSWER: You're _CHECKING IN_ (accept ''I'm Checking In") (accept "We Put The Spring In Springfield" before it's said) 2. Its adjunct gets its name from Chief Starving Bear, and it's located on Bid Snake Lake and below Mount Avalanche. It was originally run by Mr. Black - afterwards, it was worse than Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq put together. For ten points, name this Krustiest place on Earth. ANSWER: _KAMP KRUSTY_ 3. The answer is sort of a tie. In any case, it does not involve running around a beer truck or marrying Marge. It may involve a Krustyburger, an hour-long episode of Mama's family, and Lisa's birth. However, it's probably involves skipping church, winning a radio contest, making moon waffles, and finding a penny. For ten points, what am I talking about? ANSWER: _BEST DAY OF HOMER'S LIFE_ (accept equivalents) 4.

DRAWN TO THE GODS Religion and Humor in The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy Instructor’s Guide Dives into a new world of religious satire illuminated through the layers of religion and humor that make up the The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy. Drawing on the worldviews put forth by three wildly popular animated shows – The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy– David Feltmate demonstrates how ideas about religion’s proper place in American society are communicated through comedy. The book includes discussion of a wide range of American religions, including Protestant and Catholic Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Native American Religions, New Religious Movements, “Spirituality,” Hinduism, and Atheism. Along the way, readers are shown that jokes about religion are influential tools for teaching viewers how to interpret and judge religious people and institutions.
