I have therefore given more dates and more details about the lives of authors than are in themselves important, because dates are convenient aids to memory, as they enable the learner to connect his new knowledge with historical facts he may have learned be¬ fore, while biographical details help to endow authors with something of concrete personality, to which the learner can attach what he learns of their literary and intellectual activity. Extracts from Latin authors are given, with few excep¬ tions, in English translation. I considered the advisability of giving them in Latin, but concluded that extracts in Latin would probably not be read by most young readers, and would therefore do less good than even imperfect translations. Moreover, the texts of the most important works are sure to be at hand in the schools, and books of selections, such as Cruttwell and Banton’s Specimens of Roman Literature, Tyrrell’s Anthology of Latin Poetry, and Gudeman’s Latin Literature of the Empire, are readily accessible. I am responsible for all translations not ac¬ credited to some other translator. In making my trans¬ lations, I have employed blank verse to represent Latin hexameters ; but the selections from the JZneid are given in Conington’s rhymed version, and in some other cases I have used translations of hexameters into metres other than blank verse. v yi ROMAN LITERATURE In writing of the origin of Roman comedy, I have not mentioned the dramatic satura. Prof. George L. Hen¬ drickson has pointed out (in the American Journal of Philology, vol. xv, pp. 1-30) that the dramatic satura never really existed, but was invented in Roman literary history because Aristotle, whose account of the origin of comedy was closely followed by the Roman writers, found the origin of Greek comedy in the satyr-drama. The greater part of the hook is naturally taken up with the extant literary works and their authors; but I have devoted some space to the lives and works of authors whose writings are lost. This I have done, not because I believe that the reader should burden his memory with useless details, but partly in order that this book may be of use as a book of reference, and partly because the men¬ tion of some of the lost works and their authors may im¬ press upon the reader the fact that something is known of many writers whose works have survived, if at all, only in detached fragments. Not a few of these writers were im¬ portant in their day, and exercised no little influence upon the progress of literature. Of the whole mass of Roman literary production only a small part—though fortunately in great measure the best part—now exists, and it is only by remembering how much has been lost that the modern reader can appreciate the continuity of Roman literature. The literature of the third, fourth, and fifth centuries after Christ is treated less fully than that of the earlier times, but its importance to later European civilization has been so great that a summary treatment of it should be included even in a book of such limited scope as this. The Bibliography will, I hope, be found useful. It is by no means exhaustive, but may serve as a guide to those who have not access to libraries. The purpose of the Chronological Table is not so much to serve as a finding- list of dates as to show at a glance what authors were liv¬ ing and working at any given time. In the Index the PREFACE vii names of all Latin writers mentioned in the book are to be found, together with references to numerous topics and to some of the more important historical persons. Besides the works of the Roman authors, I have con¬ sulted the general works mentioned in the Bibliography and numerous other books and special articles. 1 have made most use of Teuffel’s History of Roman Literature, Schanz’s Romische Litteraturgeschiclite, and Mackail’s ad¬ mirable Latin Literature.     Colin McAllister Regnum Caelorum Terrestre: The Apocalyptic Vision of Lactantius May 2016 Abstract: The writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L. Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius have been extensively studied by historians, classicists, philosophers and theologians. But his unique apocalyptic eschatology expounded in book VII of the Divinae Institutiones, his largest work, has been relatively neglected. This paper will distill Lactantius’s complex narrative and summarize his sources. In particular, I investigate his chiliasm and the nature of the intermediate state, as well as his portrayal of the Antichrist. I argue that his apocalypticism is not an indiscriminate synthesis of varying sources - as it often stated - but is essentially based on the Book of Revelation and other Patristic sources. +++++ The eminent expert on all things apocalyptic, Bernard McGinn, wrote: Even the students and admirers of Lactantius have not bestowed undue praise upon him. To Rene Pichon [who wrote in 1901 what is perhaps still the seminal work on Lactantius’ thought] ‘Lactantius is mediocre in the Latin sense of the word - and also a bit in the French sense’; to Vincenzo Loi [who studied Lactantius’ use of the Bible] ‘Lactantius is neither a philosophical or theological genius nor linguistic genius.’ Despite these uneven appraisals, the writings of the early fourth-century Christian apologist L.     Chapter 4: The Literary Tradition Erotic Insinuations, Irony, and Ekphrasis Even before the story of Pero and Cimon became a well-known subject matter in early modern art, European audiences were familiar with it through a millena- rian textual tradition and an oral tradition that left traces in Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Pomerania, Albania, and Serbia until the nineteenth century.1 The primary ancient source was Valerius Maximus’s Memorable Doings and Sayings (ca. 31 ce), of which at least fi fty-one diff erent editions were printed in Italy, Germany, Spain, and France before 1500.2 In the Middle Ages, Maximus’s book ranked as the most frequently copied manuscript next to the Bible.3 In addi- tion, numerous retellings of Maximus’s example of fi lial piety found their way into medieval fi ction, moral treatises, sermon literature, and compilations of “women’s worthies.” The story about the breastfeeding daughter as an allegory of fi lial piety in both its maternal and paternal variety was thus widely known to both learned and illiterate audiences in medieval and early modern Europe. The fame of Valerius Maximus’s Memorable Doings and Sayings in medieval and early modern Europe stands in stark contrast to its neglect in the scho- larly world since the nineteenth century. Only recently have literary historians rediscovered and translated his text, commenting on how the derivative nature of Maximus’s anecdotes relegated them to near total obscurity in the modern academic world.4 His compilation of historical and moral exempla acquired best-seller status already in antiquity because of the brief and succinct form in which he presented those memorable stories about the past, which he collected from a wide array of Latin and Greek authors, as well as their somewhat sensati- onalist content.

Modern life is a struggle, it seems – it’s dog eat dog in the urban jungle, and those who can’t keep up the pace soon become victims (actually, being a ‘victim’ is the in thing). ‘Reality’ is the hottest show in town: we’re done with drama and fantasy, as amateur theatrics and seeing people actually suffer is such a blast (as well as being a really ‘ironic’ creative experiment). This is a culture that has long realised Warhol’s prophecy, where everyone wants their bite of the fame cherry, but where fame itself is a dirty shadow of what it used to be. The young recall nothing but peace, yet fierce wars still bristle at the world’s edges, and even as the concrete keeps rising, a smog of instability and malaise lingers.

Gross Doctor of Philosophy Department of Political Science University of Toronto 2017 ii Abstract The Iliad is a work of great literary complexity that contains profound insights and a wide- ranging account of the human condition. Some of the most important recent scholarly work on the poem has also emphasized the political dimension of Homer’s account. In this dissertation, I aim to contribute to our understanding of the Iliad as a work of political thought. Focusing on books 1 through 9 of the Iliad, I will try to show how we can discover in it a consistent chronological or historical account, even though at many points that history is not presented in a linear way, in the poem itself. Through various references we are able to discern an historical account of the entire cosmic order. Homer focuses on the newly established Olympian gods and, therewith, their need to enforce the crucial separation between themselves and human beings: that is, between their own status as immortals, and our condition as mortals. Homer’s history of the Trojan War, in turn, conveys crucial lessons about politics and the human condition. The dissertation traces the history of the war as it emerged from a private struggle and developed into a public war.

Jones Chair of Supervisory Commitee: Professor Alain Gowing Department of Classics This study is about the construction of identity and self-promotion of status by means of elite education during the first and second centuries CE, a cultural and historical period termed by many as the Second Sophistic. Though the Second Sophistic has traditionally been treated as a Greek cultural movement, individual Romans also viewed engagement with a past, Greek or otherwise, as a way of displaying education and authority, and, thereby, of promoting status. Readings of the work of Quintilian, Tacitus and Pliny, first- and second-century Latin prose authors, reveal a remarkable engagement with the methodologies and motivations employed by their Greek contemporaries—Dio of Prusa, Plutarch, Lucian and Philostratus, most particularly. The first two chapters of this study illustrate and explain the centrality of Greek in the Roman educational system. The final three chapters focus on Roman displays of that acquired Greek paideia in language, literature and oratory, respectively. As these chapters demonstrate, the social practices of paideia and their deployment were a multi-cultural phenomenon.     THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXT FOR OBSTRUCTION IN ROMAN LOVE ELEGY by AMY K. LEONARD (Under the Direction of Charles Platter) ABSTRACT This thesis will examine the presence of erotic obstruction in the poems of the first century B.C. writers of Roman love elegy: Tibullus, Propertius and Ovid. While erotic poetry prior to this time period had long necessitated a sense of obstruction, the deliberate construction of a failed love-affair by the Roman elegists serves to define their particular use of obstruction as a unique discursive strategy. The observation has been made that the time period marking the emergence and disappearance of Roman elegy qualifies it as a discrete, time-bound genre. In light of these time considerations, the obstruction motif in elegy, as a means of articulating a continual sense of failure, is capable of giving involuntary voice to events taking place on the Roman socio-political front, specifically, as this thesis will argue, a perceived loss of autonomy under the changing political structures at the end of the Republic.     Heracles in Homer and Apollonius: Narratological Character Analysis in a Diachronic Perspective Silvio Bär Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas, University of Oslo, Norway For Winnie 1. Introduction Aristotle in his Poetics (1451a 16–22) mentions epics on the life and deeds of Heracles as a negative example of what he considers to be imperative for good dramatic progress and coherence, namely, the unity of action.1 According to Aristotle, unity of action is not automatically constituted by the sum of all the single events that occur in one and the same character’s lifetime. This verdict encapsulates two parameters that are going to be of eminent importance in this article. First, it shows that Aristotle did not see an inherent connection between a literary character and the idea of unity, but indeed rather viewed these two aspects as contradictory. As will be demonstrated, plausible as it sounds, this methodological proposition is often not taken for granted in literary character studies in classical scholarship. C. His father, who was a man of property and belonged to the clas'S of the "Knights," moved to Rome when Cicero was a child; and the future statesman received an elaborate education in rhetoric, law, and philosophy, studying and practising under some of the most noted teachers of the time. He began his career as an advocate at the age of twenty-five, and almost immediately came to be recognised not only as a man of brilliant talents but also as a courageous upholder of justice in the face of grave political danger.
