REGION 2 SENSITIVE SPECIES EVALUATION FORM

Species: rosea (Bush) Cory var. macrolepis (Rydb.) B.L. Turner & M.I. Morris rose palafoxia SYNONYM: Palafoxia macrolepis (Rydb.) Cory [Harrington 1954]

Criteria Rank Rationale Literature Citations • Anderson 1950 Converse and Goshen Cos, WY; se-most (Baca and Las Animas Cos) CO; and s-central KS. KS population • Barkley 1991 is a minor disjunct; WY population is disjunct by several hundred miles. [Vouchers at KANU from Clark and • Clark 1996 1 Comanche Cos, KS.] • Freeman in prep. Distribution A Status: G5T3T4; KS S1; WY S1. • Hartman 1997 within R2 • Shaw et al. 1989 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low • Turner & Morris 1976 • Weber & Wittman 2001 se WY, se-most CO, and s-central KS; thence s through w OK, panhandle of TX and e-most NM; thence throughout central TX 2 • Turner & Morris 1976 Distribution C outside R2 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Evaluator was unable to find any information about species’ dispersal capability. Species appears to set rather abundant seed. However, individual seeds are equipped with a small crown-like pappus and it doesn’t 3 appear very likely that they are dispersed over long distances to suitable habitat.

Dispersal D Capability Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Species is known only from several isolated population in CO, KS, and WY. It is possible that these populations may face local extinction, leading to imperilment of the species in R2. 4

Abundance in A R2 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Evaluator was unable to find any information about population trends within R2.

5

Population D Trend in R2 Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Observation of herbarium specimen labels at KANU reveals that species is found on gravelly or sandy soil in mixed grass prairie or along river beds. Evaluator is unaware of species’ habitat in WY, however CO/KS 6 habitat is probably largely stable.

Species: Palafoxia rosea (Bush) Cory var. macrolepis (Rydb.) B.L. Turner & M.I. Morris rose palafoxia SYNONYM: Palafoxia macrolepis (Rydb.) Cory [Harrington 1954]

Criteria Rank Rationale Literature Citations Evaluator was unable to find any information about habitat requirements. If species is similar in its habitat 7 requirements to congener P. sphacelata, it requires moderate amounts of disurbance, perhaps benefitting Habitat from limited grazing by livestock.

Vulnerability D or Modification Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Annual forb. Flowering and fruiting mid June through late September. Evaluator was unable to find any other life history information. 8 Life History B and Demographics Confidence in Rank High or Medium or Low Evaluator: Caleb A. Morse, R.L. 1 Likely is defined as more likely to occur than not occur on the National Forest or Grassland. This generally can be thought of as having a 50% chance or greater of appearing on NFS lands.
