CAUCASIAN CLOVER ESTABLISHMENT IN THE HIGH COUNTRY AND GRAZING RESPONSES IN RYEGRASS/WHITE CLOVER LOWLAND PASTURE Allister J.E. Moorhead ABSTRACT A trial to measure the effects of establishment techniques and feltiliser application on seedling. establishment and early root and rhizome development of Caucasian clover (Trifolium ambiguum) was sown in early October 1992, on a low-fertility, depleted, short tussock grassland site at Mesopotamia Station, South Canterbury. Three sowing techniques, broadcasting, sod seeding· and strip seeding, each with two rates of fertiliser, 150 or 300 kg/ha molybdic sulphur superphosphate (8% P, 20% S), were used. By mid December, 48% and 38% establishment had occUlTed in the strip and sod seeding treatlnents respectively, but only 10% in the broadcast. Strip seeding resulted in the earliest taproot and rhizome ,development of Caucasian clover and the greatest lateral spread of rhizomes. However, all plants stlip and sod seeding developed rhizomes after nine months. Plants established by broadcasting were small with few rhizomes in I the first season. The higher fertiliser rate improved establishment and growth, palticularly in the 1-: ' strip seeding treatment. Strip seeded Caucasian clover established as rapidly as white clover and plants were similar in size after five months. However, Caucasian clover had a larger under ground mass which could lead to greater persistence. ii A grazing trial was established to observe how two cultivars of Caucasian clover and two seed lines of zig zag clover responded to four diverse grazing treatments. The expeliment was located at Lincoln University, latitude 43 0 39S and longitude 1720 28E on a medium- to free- draining soil of medium feltility with an annual rainfall of 651mm. In March 1989 a seed production expeliment was established and consisted of Caucasian clover cu1tivars Alpine and Monaro and zig zag clover seed lines Porters Pass and Kentucky. In spling of 1992 high endophyte ryegrass was direct drilled into this experiment. The first grazing to establish mainplot treatments occurred in early October 1993. The experiment design was a randomised block design with two replicates of four treatments. The treatments included two grazing frequencies; rotational grazing and set stocking; and two grazing intensities; hard and lax. Point analysis was used to measure the botanical composition of the pastures. Only the hexaploid Monaro Caucasian clover was agronomically suitable as a companion for high endophyte ryegrass and white clover under the range of grazing managements. The zig zag clovers showed a classic hay type species inability to persist and contlibute to dry matter production under grazing. The diploid Alpine Caucasian clover persisted undergrazing but had a low cover percentage. Monaro Caucasian clover had a mean seasonal cover of between 14% and 21 % in the grazing treatments, contributing more to pasture cover in the rotationally grazed tl·eatments. White clover, in contrast was more suited to the set stock hard grazed treatment and to a lesser extent the set stock lax grazed treatment. Corresponding author: K. Lluga-Rizani, [email protected] Abstract. The object of our research was Trifolium montanum (Linnaeus, 1758). The aim was to ascertain the level of morphological variability between different populations, and put more light on taxonomy of this species. The research was carried out on the vertical profile of Sharri Mountain, Kosovo. One part of the collected plant material was dried and placed in herbarium, whereas the other part was preserved in alcohol of 70% for preparation of microscope slides. A comparative-morphometric method was used to evaluate the morphological variability of individuals and populations. For examination of variability of stomatal apparatus, trichome length, vascular bundle diameter, palisade and sponge cell lengths, SWIFT M10L SERIES microscope with a measurement software, was used. 26 morphological traits have been investigated. From the results obtained during this research it can be concluded that there is significant difference between 10 locations from Sharri Mountain for most of micro and macro morphological traits. Also the results lead to the suggestion for the taxonomic revision of this taxon. Key Words: morphological variability, Trifolium montanum, locations, taxonomic revision.     The Dolomites Devil’s Claw and King of the Alps A Greentours Trip Report 24th June to 3rd July 2015 Led by Paul Cardy Daily Reports and Systematic Lists by Paul Cardy Day 1 Wednesday 24th June Arrival and Journey to Claut The most notable sight on my journey from the western Alps to Venice Airport was first one Sacred Ibis, and then three more, flying across the road as I drove through Vercelli province. This African species is now very locally established here. At Marco Polo airport I soon met Debra and Matt, and Beth and John, all of whom had been spending a few days exploring the city, and we set off north, initially across the predominantly agricultural plains, the line of the Alps ahead. Even in the lowlands the vegetation was still surprisingly verdant at this season. The scenery became ever more impressive, and once we’d left the main road the verges had many flowers. Above Longarone, now in the Dolomiti Friulani, I took a short detour and we walked a quiet lane, with a fine flora, and butterflies much in evidence. There were a good number of Apollos on the wing, and many nectaring. There were also Scarce Swallowtail, Blue-spot Hairstreak, Pearly Heaths, Marbled Whites, Woodland Brown, Common Blues, and Large Skippers. Burnets were numerous, among them Zygaena transalpina and Zygaena lonicerae. Spiked Bellflowers were impressive, with Campanula persicifolia too. Broad-leaved and Dark Red Helleborines were admired, the latter numerous, and there were a number of Fragrant Orchids, some very robust. There were also a few Lesser Butterfly Orchids and a great find was several Fly Orchids in fine flower.

Bedie Herbarium from “Marin Drăcea” National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry, both through the number of plates contained, as well as the data gathered in these plates regarding the variety of years and harvesting locations or the specialists that have gathered them. The present paper describes the main Trifolium species present in the above mentioned Herbarium, systematizing at the same time the contained plates based on their harvesting year and location, as well as the specialist involved in their gathering. After a short introductory description of the Herbarium, the present paper continues with detailing the studied material, represented by 505 Trifolium plates, together with describing the work methods used for systematizing and describing the plants from the studied plates. The Herbarium contains an important number of rare or endemic plants, threatened with extinction that appear nowadays in the Red Book of Romanian vascular plants. A number of three Trifolium species belonging to the Red Book have been identified in the Herbarium, namely Trifolium subteraneum (two plates), Trifolium ornithopodioides (L) (3 plates) and Trifolium michelianum Savi (one plate). Other distinctive attractions of this genre present within the Herbarium are one Trifolium pratense L., harvested in 1836 and one Trifolium arvense gathered in 1801.
