The Royal Melbourne Wine Awards are renowned nationally and internationally as one of Australia’s largest and most prestigious wine shows. For more than 120 years, the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards have showcased the diversity and quality of Australian wines. Australia produces many outstanding wines, and the strength of our industry lies in the ability to produce wine from a range of climatic zones, representing a variety of wine styles. The Australian wine industry has a well-deserved reputation for producing a stunning range of premium wines and prestige brands that are acclaimed by connoisseurs all over the world. This year’s Royal Melbourne Wine Awards bring together Australia’s premier wine producers and their world class wines, toasting more than 3000 entries from over 540 producers. These awards provide important recognition for outstanding achievements in the pursuit of product excellence. The Victorian Coalition Government is proud to support our local wine industry and sponsor the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards I congratulate the wine producers who are participating in this year’s Royal Melbourne Wine Awards and commend your ongoing contribution to Australia’s rich wine culture. This year we renamed the ‘Show’, the ‘Awards’ in keeping with what we are trying to achieve for the industry. We also introduced a very important new trophy this year, the James Halliday Trophy for Best Pinot Noir recognising the importance of Pinot Noir to the Australian wine landscape and the development of Pinot Noir as a mainstream varietal. This trophy has been named in Halliday’s honour for his lifetime contribution to the Australian wine industry and to Pinot Noir production. Judging the 3200 wines that are entered in the Awards is an enormous task. Without the dedication and commitment of the judging team and the support from you, the exhibitors the Awards would not be possible. To the 35 wine experts and our two international guest judges from the United Kingdom, Sarah Abbott MW and Joe Wadsack, thank you on behalf of the RASV. This year is the final year our talented and dedicated Chairman of Judges, David Bicknell, will be at the helm. The RASV takes this opportunity to publicly offer its sincere thanks for steering the ship these past three years. Under the guidance of David we have seen positive evolution and considered changes all of which ensure the RMWA’s continue to remain relevant to the wine industry. We are delighted to have Tom Carson join us from 2014 in the Chair of Judges role. We also extend a sincere thanks to the RMWA Committee for their time and support and in particular acknowledge the Committee Chairman Phil Sexton. This year we have extended the RMWA reach and influence by launching a significant week-long consumer event, Melbourne Wine Week. As much as the Awards are important to the industry, we need to ensure consumers understand their value and this year wine drinkers can experience the wines through events in and around Melbourne and regional Victoria. Melbourne Wine Week starts with our own flagship event, Uncorked on Friday 25 October at Collins Place. We extend our thanks to our event sponsors including the State Government of Victoria and our event partners for their valued contribution. And finally thank you to all of our exhibitors, for your dedication to excellence and for showing us outstanding wines that we are proud to call world class. We look forward to an equally exciting line up in 2014. Mark O’Sullivan Chief Executive Officer The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria 4 Message from Chairman of Judges DAVID BICKNELL Royal Melbourne Wine Awards Chairman of Judges Scratch the surface and it all looks good. With ~ 550 companies submitting wine to the RMWA, the show is still growing in participation, and therefore an increasing in entrant diversity. While this participation is strong, perhaps the best of all of the major capital city wine shows, this still only represents ~20% of all Australian producers. To keep the RMWA, and all other wine shows both relevant and strong, we need to keep attracting the niche producers to measure up against the mainstream entries. The messaging from both domestic and export markets speaks of regional and site based wines being the key to the next cycle of industry prosperity. Whether real or imagined, during my tenure as chair of judges, the messaging has been consistent in asking the panels to look for wines that best represent the diversity of the enormous spread of GI’s within our country. Big church stuff, let them all in. Like the Rolling Stones, there are tracks that everyone loves, although they don’t necessarily love the band. Find some tracks you love. Keep the mind open etc. In keeping, any wine can now win the single vineyard trophy, not just a selection of pet favorites. The odd-ball list of wines that short- listed for this trophy was a strong statement in equal opportunity and celebration. The strong and diverse judging panel that we have employed values the input of sommeliers, writers, buyers, retailers, sundry media (sorry bloggers) and international opinion on an equal footing with the traditional technically trained judges. I will single out the contribution of our visiting internationals, Sarah Abbott MW and Joe Wadsack, for raising the awareness and endeavor of the entire panel after two sterling master classes on their pet topics. I would also like to thank our two transient panel chairs – Dr Tony Jordan and Philip Rich for their step-in contributions during the judging phase. Experience counts. With the uniformly strong 2012 vintage behind us, there were a number apparent trends: a general improvement of alternative varieties, and of alternative blends, definitive improvement with pinot gris/grigio and ground breaking work with pinot noir. The excitement we have seen in the last few years when looking at chardonnay classes, has seemingly caught on to both Grenache (and variatons) and Pinot Noir. The days of negativity towards Gris, Merlot and Rose classes seem numbered and may finally be supported and embraced in the fine wine category. Perhaps even white sauvignon. Vintage 2011 red wines again stood up extremely well, surpassing the expectations of many. Fortified wines were outstanding, if in tiny numbers. Lastly, I would like to make special mention to the stewarding crew in particular Steve Chambers & Pete Matthews and acknowledge the staff of RASV, who have been brilliant to work with at every level - Mark, Ann, Michael, Glenn and Danni. Respect. Best aye, David Bicknell Chairman of Judges 5 6 2013 Judges Profiles DAVID BICKNELL CHRIS CRAWFORD CHAIRMAN OF JUDGES PANEL CHAIR David has been chief winemaker at Oakridge Wines since 2002.
