Named after the local lonely sheep farms and a sprinkling of vineyards. It is also Shire of Plantagenet, the winery was founded in 1968 a challenging, cool-climate region that demands a when English immigrant Tony Smith identified the toughness from those looking to harness the viticulture potential of these wild and remote lands by planting vines here. Despite these challenges, Plantagenet has on his Mount Barker property. His initial plantings established itself as one of the region’s leading producers, impressed, producing Rhône-style Shirazes and stylish with a quality-driven philosophy centered on their 320 Cabernet Sauvignons. These were soon joined by Pinot Noir, acres of estate vineyards. -
In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie. -

2004 Plantagenet Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon
2004 PLANTAGENET GREAT SOUTHERN CABERNET SAUVIGNON WINEMAKER: John Durham REGION: Grown on the 37-year-old Wyjup vineyard in Western Australia’s Great Southern region VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon MATURATION: 24 months in French oak ALCOHOL: 14.0% alc/vol VINTAGE REPORT: The 2004 vintage in the Great Southern region of Western Australia was characterized by consistent, mild temperatures with a notable absence of harsh or inclement weather, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and consistently. The season began late and concluded later than usual, resulting in fruit of elegant structure, bright acidity and fresh, vibrant fruit characters. WINEMAKING: Fruit for the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon was hand harvested, crushed and fermented, with extended maceration carried out in potter fermenters for between 1 and 4 weeks. During this time the wine was pumped over twice daily to gain maximum colour and tannin extraction. Maturation for 24 months in months in French oak followed, with racking every 6 months. TASTING NOTES: Classic Cabernet aromas of blackberry, currant and ripe plums are evident with a hint of thyme and sage, alongside bottle-age derived notes of cigar box and vanilla. The elegant palate offers a silky texture with complex layering of ripe wild berries and cassis, beautifully balanced tannins and a persistent lingering finish. CRITICAL ACCLAIM: 90 pts James Halliday, 90 pts Stephen Tanzer, 90 pts Wine Enthusiast ABOUT PLANTAGENET: An historic producer, Plantagenet Wines was the first winery to be established in Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region. Named after the local Shire of Plantagenet, the winery was founded in 1968 when English immigrant Tony Smith identified the potential of these wild and remote lands by planting vines on his Mount Barker property. -
