DININROOM DRINKS-Menuv83webv.Pdf ` SINCE 2016 Here at Mayfair Lane we have around 400 wines on our list for your pleasure. The list is divided by region, to help us celebrate each wine and their sense of place. Representations from Western Australia, Australia and International regions are chosen for either their classic style or their weird and wonderful approach of thinking outside the box. By dividing our list this way, we are able to echo the story of each terroir, grape and climate. Their journey is not complete without the perfect pairing of food from our Pub or Dining Room menus… Cheers! While tasting I think about our customers wishes, and then pepper the list with a few gems that I love, in the hopes that others will love them too. There was a light bulb moment when I discovered the common thread of volcanic soils between these wines, and I wondered why I had never thought of it before. It has taken me many years to discover why I love these wines. The various countries, grapes and climates they derive from makes you value their integrity, grittiness and lack of pretention; it almost marks them as naked (not to be confused with natural). Here at Mayfair Lane, I would like to celebrate and introduce my “Volcanic” wines that demonstrate the connection and impact between soil and wine, and the reason why I have now dedicated so much of my time to this fermented grape juice. Foni Pollitt DipWSET ‘…there is no such thing as ‘volcanic wine’. There are, however wines grown on volcanic soils that come in a radiant, infinitely nuanced rainbow of colours, tastes and flavours…there is no volcanic wine in the singular, but a great and varied many.’ John Szabo MS, ‘Volcanic Wines’, Look for the Volcano symbol throughout Mayfair’s Wine List to start your discovery A GREAT WAY TO SAMPLE WINES WITHOUT BREAKING THE BUDGET – ON POUR AT MAYFAIR LANE SINCE 2016. • In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie.

  • 2004 Plantagenet Great Southern Cabernet Sauvignon
2004 PLANTAGENET GREAT SOUTHERN CABERNET SAUVIGNON WINEMAKER: John Durham REGION: Grown on the 37-year-old Wyjup vineyard in Western Australia’s Great Southern region VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon MATURATION: 24 months in French oak ALCOHOL: 14.0% alc/vol VINTAGE REPORT: The 2004 vintage in the Great Southern region of Western Australia was characterized by consistent, mild temperatures with a notable absence of harsh or inclement weather, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and consistently. The season began late and concluded later than usual, resulting in fruit of elegant structure, bright acidity and fresh, vibrant fruit characters. WINEMAKING: Fruit for the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon was hand harvested, crushed and fermented, with extended maceration carried out in potter fermenters for between 1 and 4 weeks. During this time the wine was pumped over twice daily to gain maximum colour and tannin extraction. Maturation for 24 months in months in French oak followed, with racking every 6 months. TASTING NOTES: Classic Cabernet aromas of blackberry, currant and ripe plums are evident with a hint of thyme and sage, alongside bottle-age derived notes of cigar box and vanilla. The elegant palate offers a silky texture with complex layering of ripe wild berries and cassis, beautifully balanced tannins and a persistent lingering finish. CRITICAL ACCLAIM: 90 pts James Halliday, 90 pts Stephen Tanzer, 90 pts Wine Enthusiast ABOUT PLANTAGENET: An historic producer, Plantagenet Wines was the first winery to be established in Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region. Named after the local Shire of Plantagenet, the winery was founded in 1968 when English immigrant Tony Smith identified the potential of these wild and remote lands by planting vines on his Mount Barker property.
