Platonov’s Life Chapter 1 Platonov’s Life 1 For someone justly considered one of the major figures of twentieth- century literature, Platonov left behind a surprisingly meager collec- tion of written or other materials from which his biography can be reconstructed. The paucity of biographical materials in his case is mostly a legacy of the Stalin period of Soviet history in which he lived most of his life, when private documents could be turned into incriminating evidence in the event of a search by the agents of the NKVD (the Stalinist secret police). But even against this background the material is sparse. Platonov kept a series of notebooks in which he wrote down ideas for literary works and technical inventions, and these have been published in recent years; but they reveal almost nothing of his private life and even relatively little about the composition of his literary works. He is not known to have kept a diary, though many of his contemporaries did, sometimes prolifically (see, for example, those collected in Garros, et al., Intimacy and Terror. Soviet Diaries of the 1930s and those discussed in Hellbeck, Revolution on My Mind. Writing a Diary under Stalin). Some letters by and to him have survived and been published, but not very many. Reminiscences by some of his acquaintances have also been published, but few of their authors seems to have known Platonov particularly closely—or, since some of these reminiscences were published in the Soviet era, to have been willing to say much about Platonov’s views. At various times from the 1920s–1940s Platonov filled out questionnaires for one or another journal or literary organization, but the information in them is sometimes contradictory and we lack even a full account of his non-literary employment for various land-reclamation agencies in the 1920s and 1930s. -

ABSTRACT NEITHER THIS ANCIENT EARTH NOR ANCIENT RUS’ HAS PASSED ON: A MICROHISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY OF IVAN BUNIN by Zachary Adam Hoffman The life and writings of Russian author Ivan Alexseevich Bunin (1870-1953) provide a number of important insights into the major cultural discourses of late nineteenth and early twentieth- century Russian history. This thesis uses his experiences and literature as well as those of a number of his contemporaries as a guide for examining the larger dialogues of Russian cultural life in which Bunin participated. In particular, it focuses on the question of Russian national identity, responses to the February and October Revolutions, and the role of nostalgia in Russian émigré culture in Russia Abroad. The use of Bunin’s life to explore these themes also demonstrates the ways in which many of these issues carried over from the imperial era to the Soviet era in Russian émigré communities. A microhistorical study of his life thus provides a template for examining these themes within the larger scope of Russian history during this period. Draskoczy, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2010 The dissertation concerns the construction of Stalin’s White Sea-Baltic Canal (Belomorsko- Baltiskii Kanal imeni Stalina), one of the most significant and infamous forced-labor projects of Soviet Russia. In just twenty months from 1931-1933, political and criminal prisoners built a 227-kilometer-long canal in extreme environmental conditions, without the help of any modern equipment. This early Gulag project differed greatly from others in its broad use of art and creativity as a motivational and propagandistic tool. Prisoners performed in agitbrigady (agitational brigades), participated in camp-wide competitions of poetry and prose, worked as journalists at the camp newspaper Perekovka, and attended theatrical performances completely produced by fellow prisoners. -

Kondoyanidi, Ph.D. Washington, DC December 7, 2019 Copyright 2019 by Anita Kondoyanidi All Rights Reserved ii THE PROPHET DISILLUSIONED: MAXIM GORKY AND THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTIONS Anita Kondoyanidi, Ph.D. Thesis Advisor: Michael David-Fox, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This study investigates Maxim Gorky’s public and literary life based on new materials from Italian and Russian archives (Archivio Centrale Dello Stato and the Archives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), which bring to light Gorky’s reasons for returning to the Soviet Union in 1928 and to travel back and forth to Italy until 1933, when he decided to remain in the Soviet Union. The period under examination, the years of Gorky’s life (1868-1936), witnessed the Revolution of 1905, World War I, the February and October Revolutions, the Civil War, NEP, and a cultural revolution of which Gorky became a zealous architect. This study argues that Gorky’s personal experiences with violence at the hands of the Russian petit bourgeoisie and peasantry generated his strong and tenacious desire to recast Man and heal Russia and Russians from their innate pessimism and laziness. Once Gorky accepted selective use of violence in building an ideal Soviet society and offered Russia a utopian project – the creation of a new, improved human being—he contributed to the horrifying reality of the 1930s, making himself an unintentional accomplice in the Soviet revolutionary and repressive experiment. -

Greek literature is the oldest literature of Europe and was a literature in the full original meaning of the word. That of Rome flourished later; it developed on the basis of Greek literature and profited from its successes. (1) The Ancient Greek created all genres of literature, and left us masterpieces which serve as models, preserving their old names (principally Greek): the poem, the epic, the lyric, the tragedy, the comedy, the ode, the elegy, the epigram, etc. We call this Greek and Roman literature "classical". (2) Recent archaeological discoveries and new studies in the fields of ethnography and linguistics, the discovery of the Aegaeo-Mycenaean civilisation, tell us that the Greeks, at the beginning of their history, had some direct or indirect links with the peoples of the East, such as the Babylonians, the Phoenicians and the Egyptians, by whom they were influenced. This is confirmed by the fact that the earliest literary production of the Greeks arose in Asia Minor. Greek colonisation also had importance for the stimulation of creative activity. -
