CHURCH BELLS After being silent, for many months, Leighton church bells were rung twice, in two days, earlier in June. The second occasion was for a wedding and we are grateful to Lizzie & Oswin from Westbury and Cerys & David from Montgomery for helping out, on the day. On the previous afternoon, a team drawn from Cheshire, Oxfordshire and rang a full peal of 'Surprise Minor' consisting of 5,040 changes and lasting two hours and fifty four minutes! The same team had also rung a full peal at Forden during the morning. They commented that it was hard work, due to the heat and humidity, but both Forden and Leighton are 'excellent rings of bells'. We look forward to welcoming visiting teams, in the future, and, if you would like to learn to ring bells, please get in touch — David Griffiths 01938 555 458 - 3 -

TRELYSTAN HARVEST FESTIVAL

FRIDAY 21st SEPTEMBER 2018 Service in church at 6.30pm Followed by knife & fork supper & sale of produce

We held a very successful & enjoyable FÊTE at TRELYSTAN . The amount raised was just over £3,300 and the Church Warden & members of the PCC would be like to thank everyone who attended or helped in any way for making it such a lovely & very successful afternoon. We are very grateful for all the help we received on the day & would not be able to hold the fete if it were not for the generosity of so many people. - 4 - Several years ago on holiday in Brittany, we Words & Phrases That Show Your Age - Part 2 visited Quimper Cathedral. The music theme of this issue was prompted by the concert programme for Music Club on page 8 and their appeal for new members to support future activities. Also there is a review of the flamboyant Rip It Up Rhondda from Welsh WHEN DO WE WANT IT? WANT WHAT? National Opera. This has something for everyone – described by the composer as a mixture of cabaret, operetta, opera, vaudeville and music hall – not forgetting great dance numbers as well. We are lucky to have great shows like this put on locally and at bargain prices compared to big city performances. - 6 - Tractor Run 2018

This year’s run started from Winnington and then cross country over fields slippery with TRACTORS dry straw caused by the heatwave. The route zigzagged down vertiginous slopes past Old Parr’s cottage. Back on the road we went slowly to the viewing point at the west end of Heldre Hill then through the woods emerging on Welsh Harp hollow and finally to Lord’s Buildings for lunch/high tea. Over a hundred tractors of all sizes and vintages took part. Including £2,000 this year the raffle, another £2,000 was raised for Hope House

What Is That Ladder For?

A short while ago a gargoyle dropped off the spire taking with it the wing of a second gargoyle. The PCC did not have the ready funds to carry out a survey of the Church Tower and Spire until James Potter directed Landfill Tax funds, from his Landfill Site operations, via Entrust, for use by the PCC. We are very grateful to James for his support of the Church. A firm of steeplejacks from Bath was employed to survey the Tower & Spire; this was carried out just before last Christmas. A report was provided with accompanying photographs and a decision was made to repair, where possible, the loose gargoyles, point up the poor sections of the Spire and to seal up the louvre vents where the crows are nesting. The birds force twigs etc into the tower, which builds up under the bells, creating a fire hazard. Whilst discussing this work it was drawn to the PCC’s attention that there was insufficient lightning protection and that a length of lightning cable should be taken horizontally round the spire above the top window and linked to the existing two lightning conductor tapes and to any other new metal work in the tower. This new cable has now been fitted around the tower. The Steeplejack firm also drew to the PCC’s attention that the internal wooden ladders in the tower and the two upper timber platforms, above the Bell Chamber, did not comply with H & S Regulations and should be replaced by metal ladders together with safety lines, body harness and lanyard. The Church Architect and the Hereford Diocesan Advisory Officer were consulted and it was agreed that the current timber ladders, (165 years old) were unsafe and should be replaced. The two runs of ladders and steel platform are now under construction. It is planned that the external Spire works will take place in September/October. The Lych Gates were inspected and were in such a poor state that they have now been taken off for renovation by a local Joiner. Other works have been carried out in the churchyard. Keith Pryce came and levelled out the area under the yew trees, where grass cutting and surplus grave- digging subsoil has been dumped over the years. High pruning of some trees has taken place, to remove dead wood and open out the view of the church LEIGHTON HARVEST LUNCH from the main gates. Founded in 1942 and a registered charity (no. 501838) the Welshpool Music Club needs new members if it is to continue to offer its programme of performances by top class musicians. The concerts offer a large variety of music, instrumental and vocal. We aim to provide an exciting and varied range of music by musicians of the highest calibre. Many of our performers have gone on to make their name in the musical world. Our 76th season for 2018-2019 commences with a concert on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at The Methodist Church in Welshpool. Our newest member who says “I had read, and seen, notices about the Welshpool Music Club and eventually I went to sample my first concert . I was so impressed by the quality of the music, and the acoustics and ambience within the church that I immediately took out a year's membership. Every concert has been different but all maintained the high quality of that first experience. I know whatever the nature of the concert I shall enjoy an evening of really good musicianship along with refreshments and a chat with like-minded listeners”.

RECORDED MUSIC - PART 1 Friday 29th June was the date of a spectular WNO performance at the Hafren theatre, Newtown. Astoundingly, this production had four main lead parts but an enormous choir of another 15 - with the orchestra getting on for 30 people on stage at the same time. Such a large cast created a great sense of outdoor rallies but also very effective tableaux of both houses of parliament - the commons and lords. It was impressive that the cast not only all fitted on the stage but managed very exuberant and perfectly coordinated dance routines at the same time. That said, one of the joys of our local theatre is the small size — a good view from all seats and very inexpensive even in the front rows.
