The aim of Leighton Church Fete way back in June was always to give villagers and visitors the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful church and churchyard here in Leighton and that was achieved with bells on! And we even had the added bonus of a visiting bellringing team who raised the bells and raised the spirits and truly set the tone for an enjoyable afternoon. Thank you to everyone who helped prior to the event by strimming the churchyard, doing great graphics, publicity, shopping, planning, finances and the transporting and setting up of the furniture and tent. On the day thank you to Margery Davies for opening the fete so elegantly and to everyone who baked, donated prizes and goods, loaned furniture, gave plants and produce and manned all of the stalls, the draw and the busy tea tent. Thank you to Clive who entertained us all afternoon with his singing and to Dave who helped with the parking. Special thanks must go to Andreas Praefke who was visiting Rob & Wendy Jones for the weekend and along with Rob spent the entire weekend helping out. Rachel’s quiz proved very popular and was won by Rachael Briggs with Julie Mitten and Julie Evans who combined to come in a surprising second! Thank you to everyone who gave their time and who supported the stalls and draw and along with the regulars we had new neighbours and visitors who came to the church for the first time and others revisited from their youth. Additionally the amount raised totalled £710.35 so well done to you one and all, a great team effort. Jane Walton Photos by Jane opposite

We hope to see our own Rev Robert enjoying better health in the very near future as we miss your input into the village Robert.

We are glad to see Ann Markwick is now on the road to recovery after a recent operation and hopefully we will soon see her out and about. And Ann wants to add: “A huge THANK YOU to everyone for all the wonderful cards and good wishes I have received recently. I am overwhelmed by such kindness, and it has really encouraged me to know so many friends were wishing me well. See you soon, Ann M.”

We have enjoyed a busy summer of garden openings with record numbers of visitors at many of our gardens. But, there are still many delights in the garden during the next few months. As well as Maesfron Hall at Trewen, which is open on 10th September, there are eight more gardens which open by arrangement giving you plenty of opportunity to enjoy autumn colours. You can discover more about our gardens and the charities supported by the National Garden Scheme at www.ngs.org.uk and by following us on Facebook and Twitter @powysngs.

Can you help us? Perhaps by supporting a garden owner by serving teas or selling plants. Or maybe you can help publicising our gardens by posting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. In North Powys, we have about 40 gardens which open for us from Oswestry to down to . If you are over 16 years old, have an enthusiasm for gardens, the natural world and fundraising, and have time to help in the summer, we would love to hear from you! Forden with Leighton and Trelystan Community Council Cyngor Cymuned Ffordun gyda Thre’r-Llai a Threlystan

2016 was an action-packed year for Forden, Leighton and Trelystan Community Council. Our biggest single project was the resurfacing of the Forden Multi - Purpose courts. The Council donated £1,000 to help with the cost of repairs to the playground at Leighton school. Smaller donations were made to Forden church and to the Forden and Leighton newsletters. We also replaced the rickety bus shelter outside the Cock Hotel, and carried out essential repairs to the Forden sports pavilion. We increased the annual revenue support grant to Leighton Village Hall and Forden Community Centre. We continue to manage Forden cemetery, cutting the grass on the Forden sports field, maintaining the Community Centre sewage system (the cost of this is shared equally with Forden school), and maintaining the play areas in Forden and Heritage Green. As if this wasn’t enough, the council is also an employer, being responsible for a Clerk and a Caretaker. I hope from all this you will see that Councillors continue to work hard on your behalf, giving their time and skills voluntarily and drawing no expenses. May 2017 - Our longest standing Councillor Mr Derek Clare decided to step down after 30 years of service. Councillors thanked him and wished him all the best for the future. In July 2017 – We Co-opted Councillor Rachel Tibbott to the Trelystan Ward.
