This paper will begin with an introduction on how martial arts and specifically Japanese martial arts have been studied previously is the field of anthropology, sociology, philosophy and history, and will also discuss the problematics of these previous approaches. The research data is based on an ethnographic fieldwork that was conducted in Japan for a period of six months in 2013-2014. The research methodology utilizes phenomenological approach and the researcher positioned himself as part of the training group that was the object of study. This sort of methodological approach can be described as apprentice anthropology or enactive ethnography, in which the researcher is part of the training group that he studies. The main concern in this paper will be how a specific kind of habitus is created in the context of iaidō. The analysis will be based on phenomenological approach combined with the concept of habitus as developed by Pierre Bourdieu. The theoretical framework provided by Bourdieu will be further elaborated through the works of Loïc Wacquant, who has applied Bourdieu’s concept to the study on how habitus is created in a boxing gym. The creation of habitus in the context of iaidō will be revealed through descriptive analysis on how the bodily and mental dispositions are acquired in the training process. The training session works as a platform in which the kinesthetic skills can be acquired. The pedagogy is based on emulating the teacher movements as well as on oral transmission of knowledge. The transmission of knowledge happens through the social context of dōjō, which is formed by individual practitioners. The data is further analyzed to reveal how the habitus changes according to individual practitioner and during the transmission process. This social context does not only exists for the current practitioners, but it is also an historical process. A martial art school is an institution that spans historically and socially through different generations of practitioners. Similarly, the iaidō habitus is formed through these social and historical processes. However, it can never remain exactly the same, but it is instead prone to changes. Tutkielma alkaa johdannolla siitä miten kamppailulajeja, urheilua ja erityisesti japanilaisia budō-lajeja on aiemmin tutkittu sellaisilla tieteenaloilla kuten antropologia, sosiologia, filosofia ja historia. Tutkimuksessa käytettävä aineisto on kerätty etnografisessa kenttätutkimuksessa Japanissa kuuden kuukauden aikana vuosina 2013-2014. Tutkimusmetodiikka sisältää fenomenologisia lähestymistapoja ja tutkija on asettanut itsensä osaksi tutkittavaa. harjoitusyhteisöä. Tämän tyyppistä metodologista lähestymistapaa voidaan kuvailla oppipoika-antropologiaksi tai enaktiiviseksi etnografiaksi, jossa tutkija on osa tutkimaansa harjoitteluyhteisöä ja osallistuu itse aktiivisesti harjoituksiin. Tämän tutkielma keskittyy siihen miten tietyntyyppinen habitus luodaan iaidōssa ja harjoittelun yhteydessä. Analyysi perustuu fenomenologiseen lähestymistapaan, joka on yhdistetty Pierre Bourdieun habituksen käsitteeseen. Bourdieun tarjoamaa teoreettista viitekehystä on laajennettu Loïc Wacquantin töiden kautta. Wacquant on soveltanut Bourdieun habituksen käsitteen tutkimukseensa siitä, miten habitusta luodaan nyrkkeilysalilla. Habituksen luomista iaidōssa pyritään analysoimaan kuvailemalla sitä prosessia miten ruumiilliset ja mentaaliset dispositiot omaksutaan harjoittelun kautta. Tässä analyysissä turvaudutaan fenomenologiseen lähestymistapaan, jotta saadaan aikaan mahdollisimman tarkka ja syvällistä kuvausta siitä prosessista, jolla nämä dispotitiot omaksutaan. Tutkimusaineistoa analysoidaan syvemmin, jolloin voidaan nähdä miten habitus muuttuu ja mukautuu sekä yksilöllisen harjoittelijan mukaan, että osana siirtymäprosessia opettajalta oppilaalle. Analyysissä kiinnitetään huomiota myös sosiaalisen kontekstin merkitykselle siirtymäprosessissa. Tämä sosiaalinen konteksti näkyy selvimmin harjoitteluryhmässä, mutta se ulottuu myös historiallisesti merkittäviin henkilöihin lajin sisällä. Kamppailulaji on instituutio joka levittäytyy historiallisesti ja sosiaalisesti eri harjoittelusukupolvien mukana. Iaido habitus luodaan näiden sosiaalisten ja historiallisten prosessien kautta.     The Kata of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Shoden Level or Omori-ryu There are three levels of Iai (aware and ready) kata (formal techniques) in Eishin ryu. The first or shoden level consist of eleven forms developed by Omori Rokurozaemon, a student of Hasegawa Eishin and an expert in Shinkage Ryu kenjutsu. With the unification of Japan the samurai had no wars to fight (1615-1867). Omori combined a series of sword drawing exercises with the etiquette of the tea ceremony to create the formal Seiza Kata. This was the birth of ‘Iaido’ where techniques of self-defense became techniques of self-development. These kata are used for grading for second dan and above in the All United States Kendo Federation. They are called the koryu kata, which means classical martial traditions or ancient forms. All but one, Oikaze, begin from the seiza (kneeling) position. The O chiburi (blood throw) is done standing with the feet together. Present Name English meaning and explanation of technique 1. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice.

Once back in Cambridge, I set out to organize a visit to the exhibition for members of our kendo dojo, Tsurugi-Bashi. Although, as one might expect, many of our kendoka have an interest in Japanese swords, none of us is really knowledgeable, let alone an expert or collector. We therefore needed some preparation and guidance in order fully to appreciate the visit. In the spirit of encouraging people to find out more about the subject, I there- fore requested that members wishing to join the guided tour carry out a little research about some aspect of the Japanese sword, write it up as a short essay and present it to the others.

A scholar, warrior, and spiritual leader; Harris Sensei taught without thought of personal gain, only to pass on the lineage. He moved back East, to Pennsylvania, to further his spiritual studies. Zen Bu Kan is now led by his students Jason Hankins Sensei and Dick Beckstead Sensei. More recently, Zen Bu Kan has begun to teach kendo under the direction of Robert Stroud Sensei, 7th dan renshi. Stroud Sensei leads a dojo in Boise, Idaho, and serves as a kendo mentor and instructor to Zen Bu Kan’s sensei. Iaido students at Zen Bu Kan begin by learning the basic fundamentals of iaido. Having learned the fundamentals, students then begin to learn the twelve Seitei kata. The Seitei kata are the standard by which iaido practitioners (iaidoka) world-wide begin their training and upon which they are tested. Eventually, students move on to learn the Omori-Ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu kata. Zen Bu Kan does not operate for profit and is solely supported by its students at cost. This allows the school to keep the price of tuition to a minimum, but it also means that the school is heavily dependant upon its students to remain in operation.
