Taub Family Vineyards Napa Valley, United States TAUB FAMILY VINEYARDS NAPA VALLEY, UNITED STATES Napa Valley Taub Family Vineyards was born out of a dream • St. Helena four generations in the making. Marty Taub played Taub Family Vineyards an instrumental role in the wine business from the early 1930s, and his son David built upon his dream. Marc D. Taub, the third generation, grew up with a deep appreciation for the art of winemaking and had a vision of one day making his own wines. This came to fruition in 2013, when Marc, who today works side by side with son Jake, acquired Napa Valley producer Heritance – which later evolved to Taub Family Vineyards. • Left Bank Napa Valley 2018
Left Bank Napa Valley 2018 WINEMAKER NOTES 2018 was a dream growing season and harvest for Napa Valley. An abundance of rain in February was followed by continuous days of sunshine and mild temperatures that made for uniform vines and even cluster growth. With no major heat spikes to contend with, there was no need to rush through harvest. Cooler temperatures allowed us to pick when we wanted, without stress and under optimal conditions. The gift from Mother Nature translated to wines that not only have great concentration but also an amazing freshness. ABOUT THE VINEYARD Our winemakers, influenced by their winemaking experience in the heralded region of Bordeaux, blended five distinct varietals most commonly used in Médoc in deliberate proportions for our Left Bank Napa Valley 2018. The Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in this wine, hails from a variety of appellations, including St. Helena, Rutherford, Atlas Peak, Oakville and Yountville. Each sub-AVA brings its own unique terroir and characteristics, thus allowing our winemakers to craft a wine with complex and rich aromatics and lingering flavors. ON THE NOSE Complex aromatics of rich red and black berries, Crème de cassis, anise, French toast, savory forest mushrooms and ABOUT ALPHA OMEGA underbrushs Established in 2006, Alpha Omega’s ON THE PALATE Angular black fruit, marmalade, cocoa bean, saddle mission is to create artisanal wines drawing leather, wet stone, chewy tannin on a long flavorful finish on Old World vineyard handcrafted practices with New World technology and science. 2013 CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY Release Date September, 2015 Production 568 Cases Appellation Napa Valley: Calistoga AVA, Rutherford AVA, Oakville AVA, Coombsville AVA & Howell Mountain AVA Varietal Composition 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot Winemaking Team Seana and Justin Hunnicutt Stephens, Proprietor Kirk P. Venge, Winemaker Cooperage Aged for 22 months in 100% French oak, 50% new Tasting Notes Our 2013 Napa Cab is a real beauty. Perfumed, almost feminine notes of strawberry and raspberry tart dance on the edge of the glass with darker cassis, black cherry and vanilla adding layers to the nose and hinting at the beast within. On the entry, volumes of supple bright cherry, plum and blueberry pie rush to the fore and linger well into the mid-palate. As the tannins begin to wash over and meld with the bright fruit notes, soft secondary flavors of milk chocolate and pie crust coat the palate and provide harmonious balance through the finish. This wine shows great promise and speaks well for 2013 as a year with great aging potential. While 2012 was a bombastic show stopper, 2013 will prove to be the nuanced genius plucking the right strings for years to come. Patience is a virtue, but then again, who needs virtue when great wine is waiting. Drink when you are ready, decant with vigor over the next 5 years and confidently enjoy to 2030. • 2018 Vine Cliff Malbec Oakville
2018 Vine CliffMalbec Oakville Established in 1871 and noted as the premier Napa Valley winery, Vine Cliff Vineyard and Winery was resurrected from ghost winery status by the Sweeney family in the 1980s. Vine Cliff Winery produces limited quantities of ultra-premium, estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from Oakville AVA and Los Carneros AVA respectively. Vine Cliff Vineyard encompasses a hundred acre estate with various elevations and terraced slope orientations that range from valley floor to a bench vineyard at 680 feet elevation. Our wines are reflective of our unique and highly acclaimed terroir and made in a balanced style with layer upon layer of subtlety and complexity. WINE PROFILE: Gentle fruit handling, in a small lot fermenter; with great attention to quality are the rules for producing this great Malbec. The grapes were hand-picked in the early morning to give us cold fruit for processing. Cold soaked before the must for several days gives the wine its rich color, and then fermented at high heat to extract the flavors. Once fermentation was finished, it was transferred to, and aged in 65% New French Oak barrels for 18 months. Our 2018 Oakville Malbec is a polished yet powerful wine, with a bright magenta rim and opaque purple center. TASTING NOTES: On the nose, crushed fresh blackberries and rasberries, with notes of warm baking spices and a touch of white miso; opens up to a hint of shortbread and purple lilac floral notes. The palate, with more fresh bramble fruit, continues with accents of black tea and cocoa powder punctuated with a nice long finish.

  • Turnbull Wine Cellars Vineyard & Viticulture Profile As a Small
turnbull wine cellars vineyard & viticulture profile As a small, independent winery, Turnbull is recognized for creating one of Napa Valley’s most distinguished estate programs, featuring four vineyards, spread across two appellations—Oakville and Calistoga—and spanning more than 155 acres of vines. Including both historic mountain and valley-floor sites, this remarkable estate program provides acclaimed Winemaker Peter Heitz and the Turnbull team with a rare and expansive palette of fruit from which to blend Turnbull’s wines. The Essence of Oakville Three of Turnbull’s four estate vineyards—Leopoldina, Fortuna and the Turnbull Home Ranch— are located in the famed Oakville AVA. Oakville is an officially demarcated two-mile-wide swath of Napa Valley that extends to 1,000 feet in elevation up the base of the Vaca Mountains to the east, and 500 feet in the Mayacamas Mountains to the west. Though Oakville has long been the source for some of Napa Valley’s most iconic wines, it did not earn official AVA status until 1993, the same year Patrick O’Dell acquired Turnbull. Oakville’s climate is distinctive because of its transitional, mid-valley location. This location means that it is just far enough south to receive regular morning fog from the San Pablo Bay. After the fog blows off in the mid-morning, the region receives abundant afternoon Napa Valley sun. In the afternoon, when temperatures begin to peak, cool breezes off the bay begin a daily cooling cycle that provides Oakville with its beneficial diurnal swing. The significant difference between day and nighttime temperatures preserves the acidity in the grapes, while creating deep, rich colors.

  • Guild of Sommeliers' Napa Valley Staff Training Guide
STAFF TRAINING MODULE Napa Valley Napa Valley, America’s most iconic wine region, appears saturated with the vine, yet it only accounts for a mere 4% of California wine. 45,000 acres of vineyards carpet the valley floor and dot surrounding hillsides and mountains. With an emphasis on luxury wines, this small region on California’s North Coast has cemented its image as a destination for wine tourists from around the globe, and as a world-class producer of Cabernet Sauvignon. Every third vine in Napa is Cabernet, yet the valley’s complex soil patterns, coupled with changing degrees of altitude, sunlight, and temperature, provide a diversity of source material for the winemaker to sculpt into wine. Nor is Cabernet the whole story; hundreds of varieties, from Sauvignon Blanc to Charbono to Zinfandel, thrive somewhere in the valley’s gentle, Mediterranean climate. 1 History As the second region nationally designated as an “American Viticultural Area”, Napa Valley AVA dates to 1981, but the valley’s rich history of viticulture began in the late 1830s. Spurred along by the booming days of the 1849 California Gold Rush, Napa wines achieved occasional international notice in the latter half of the 19th century, and some of today’s houses, such as Charles Krug, Schramsberg, and Beringer, date to the 1860s and ‘70s. In 1880 Scottish poet Robert Louis Stevenson famously pronounced Napa’s wines as “bottled poetry” during a honeymoon sojourn in the valley. Robert Mondavi The specter of temperance and Prohibition loomed large, and the valley’s industry was crippled with passage of the 18th Amendment.
