As paradigms in the Geosciences changed, ideas guiding tectonic and geodynamic interpretations also changed. A survey of the literature on this fascinating island shows shifts from "fixist" ideas and application of classical stratigraphic nomenclature to highly metamorphosed and deformed rocks, through to interpretations calling on extreme nappe development from a classical Alpine viewpoint. Recent discussions on the origin and evolution of the Caribbean Plate, aptly summarized in an impressive compendium of 31 papers edited by James et al. (2009), underscore that understanding the geology of Margarita Island is a key element in understanding the timing and nature of interaction of the Caribbean plate with northern South America. This field-trip, under the auspices of IUGS-UNESCO IGCP PROJECT 546 “Subduction Zones of the Caribbean”, is intended to present a hands-on overview of the rocks involved in order to allow experts from other parts of the Caribbean to “get their own picture”.     Major Tourist Attractions In Margarita Island by newsdesk Cities & Towns Porlamar is the largest city and the commercial hub of the island. Founded in 1536, Porlamar was granted its duty-free status in the 1970s. It's not particularly attractive, and these days the majority of shoppers are heading to large, modern malls built on the outskirts of the city. The city center is a chaotic jumble of shops and small department stores. Still, Porlamar has the highest concentration of shops, restaurants, bars, and discos on Margarita. Pampatar, about 10km (6 miles) northeast of Porlamar, is much more picturesque and calm. Founded in 1535 around the island's most protected deep-water harbor, Pampatar still retains much of its colonial-era flavor and architecture. The main attraction here is the Castillo de San Carlos Borromeo, a 17th-century fort that protected the town and harbor from foreign and pirate attacks. The fort's thick stone walls and bronze cannons still watch over the beach, harbor, and Caribbean Sea. The fort is open Monday through Saturday; admission is free. Across from the fort, you'll find the Iglesia de Santísimo Cristo del Buen Viaje, a church of great importance to the sailors and fishermen of Margarita. Legend has it that the crucifix here was left as a last resort, when the colonial-era vessel transporting it was unable, after repeated attempts, to leave the harbor. At the eastern end of the harbor are the ruins of the Fortín de la Caranta, which offers excellent views of the town and bay.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I suppose that every researcher, when writing up their results of months or years of study, is at one time beset by regrets of what they did not do. They did not get that one interview, or perhaps did not have time to peruse all the archives in whatever the church. And like a thorn embedded in your flesh, this nagging annoyance of what could have been and what could still be never seems to diminish. But in order to present the data, one must eventually come to grips with the inadequacies and put on the face of an optimist and cheerfully say, "Well, at least there is always more work to be done, more questions to be answered!" This is the feeling I have had ever since I left Isla Margarita in the late summer of 1994. Even staying in contact with Venezuelan friends familiar with my research can be no substitute for learning of events on the island firsthand. Unfortunately, one person cannot physically live in two places at one time. And so there must be, even temporarily, an end to the research and a time to make the best of what you have and begin to write.
