Joshua Thomas Bell Queensland and the Darling Downs 1889-1911 by D. B. Waterson Received 27 September 1984 The pastoral, legal and political career of Joshua Thomas Bell niuminates certain aspects of Queensland in general and Darling Downs history in particular during a critical time in that region's evolution. When Bell first entered the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the Northem Downs constituency of Dalby in 1893 (a seat which he was to retain until his death nineteen years later), the colony, society and landscape of the Downs were about to undergo their third major transformation since the coming of European pastoralists and the hesitant establishment of selector-based agri culture during the 1860s and 1870s. Bell's personal origins and subsequent career - he was bom in 1863 - thus spans two of the most significant phases in the European history of the region.' Bell, scion of an old-established Queensland pastoral family, now in the hands of the financially unstable Darling Downs & Westem Land Company and its overdraft master, the Queensland National Bank, entered ParUament at the time of the massive financial crash in Queensland. Yet the DarUng Downs was about to embark on a thorough reconstmction and expansion of its mral enterprises. Bell's period in Parliament saw a rapid increase in mral productivity and population on the Downs - more than in other parts of Queensland, including Brisbane - and an acceleration of Toowoomba's rise to prominence as the regional capital. In this book the author examines Australian reactions to the aggressions which led to World War II — Abyssinia, Spain, Austria, Czecho slovakia, and Poland. He describes the early support in Britain and Australia for the League of Nations, and goes on to discuss the causes of the change to a policy of appeasement, culminating in the Munich crisis of 1938, and Australian reactions to that crisis. Additionally, he compares Australian foreign policy at that time and in the sixties, when Australia again supports a powerful ally, this time in Vietnam. To those who lived through the crises of the thirties and now wish to see those years in perspective, as well as to readers of a younger generation, who seek the causes for the development of present-day attitudes to Australian foreign policy, this book will make absorbing reading. For teachers and students of the history of the period it will provide a welcome insight into the reactions of Australian politicians and people to the European crises and to Britain’s part in them. MASTER OF ARTS Department of History I Faculty of Arts, The University of Melbourne Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degr'ee of Masters of Arts (by Thesis only) JulV 2005 ABSTRACT Andrew Fisher was prime minister of Australia three times. During his second ministry (1910-1913) he headed a government that was, until the 1940s, Australia's most reformist government. Fisher's second government controlled both Houses; it was the first effective Labor administration in the history of the Commonwealth. In the three years, 113 Acts were placed on the statute books changing the future pattern of the Commonwealth. Despite the volume of legislation and changes in the political life of Australia during his ministry, there is no definitive full-scale biographical published work on Andrew Fisher. There are only limited articles upon his federal political career. Until the 1960s most historians considered Fisher a bit-player, a second ranker whose main quality was his moderating influence upon the Caucus and Labor ministry. Few historians have discussed Fisher's role in the Dreadnought scare of 1909, nor the background to his attempts to change the Constitution in order to correct the considered deficiencies in the original drafting. This thesis will attempt to redress these omissions from historical scholarship Firstly, it investigates Fisher's reaction to the Dreadnought scare in 1909 and the reasons for his refusal to agree to the financing of the Australian navy by overseas borrowing. -

OBJECT BIOGRAPHY John Smith Murdoch’s drawing instruments In 2009, the National Museum of Australia acquired a collection of drawing instruments including pens, compasses and rulers, housed in a leather-bound presentation case. On the front of the case is a silver plaque engraved with the following: ‘Presented to John S Murdoch, Architect / by a few friends on the occasion / of his leaving Elgin for Inverness. 18 Boxed set of drawing instruments November 1881.’ belonging to John Smith Murdoch, about 1881. The case contains fifteen individual drawing instruments, which are stored in a moulded tray, lined with blue grosgrain and silk fabric, and a recessed storage compartment in the lid. The lid lining is stamped with ‘W H Harling, Mathematical Instrument Manufacturer, 40 Hatton Garden, London’ and the company’s crest. The recessed lid compartment contains a sector, protractor and parallel rule. In the 1600s there was a developed stylus that could draw a line with a specific width called a ruling pen. The stylus had two curved metal pieces, which were joined by a screw. Ink was trickled between the blades, from which it flowed evenly across the paper. The basic model was maintained for a long time, with minor modifications, until the 1930s when the German technical drawing pens came to the market. Many of the instruments were made by W H Harling, as indicated by the stamp. However, some of the instruments were made by J and W E Archbutt, Stanley and Elliot Brothers, suggesting that the case originally contained instruments from a variety of manufacturers or that Murdoch had replaced items over time. -

This rethink was thrust on Gorton by British and American announcements to play a lesser role in Southeast Asian affairs, announcements that meant, in effect, the collapse of Australia’s Cold War policy. Such changes in relation to British and American intentions to remain engaged in the region prompted a wave of unprecedented national soul-searching in Australia, a key part of which was the task of re-setting the coordinates of Australian defence policy towards a more self- reliant posture. -

Chapter Two The Australian Performing Group and Its Legacy, 1968–2008 In 1970, a group of actors, writers and directors formed the Australian Performing Group (APG) in a disused pram factory building in inner- city Melbourne. Where the original site of theatrical activity in sixties Melbourne was the tiny La Mama Café,1 the formation of the APG signified an expanded vision of theatre that would produce large-scale, group-devised performance, new drama, political cabarets and reviews, outdoor agit-prop and small, experimental pieces. The Pram Factory was also a multi-purpose workshop space and venue for outside drama groups, concerts, rock bands and art and craft markets. Later, the APG evolved into a structure that commissioned new plays by emerging playwrights and performance practitioners from around the country. These aspects of the APG identify it as a local instance of both the “daring and extravagance” and internationalism of the vision prevalent in the sixties and a manifestation of the radical combination of theatrical innovation and left-wing politics. In keeping with leftist style, the APG produced manifestos, proposals and multiple position statements that were debated, passed or voted down in committees and general meetings (www.pramfactory.com). An “alternative”, anti- authoritarian and anti-hierarchical ethos was enshrined in processes of collective decision-making on creative and administrative matters and the sharing of responsibilities among members (Milne 2004: 132). The collective was subsidised throughout its life by the newly established Australia Council for the Arts that provided a small income for its members (Brisbane 2005: 131). This chapter situates the formation and activities of the APG within the period of the sixties and the wider historical and cultural sphere in which it evolved. -
