Despite the Prime Minister’s attempt to limit its impact, the conflict set in train transformations that meant Britain would never be the same again. Whether the Second World War was the great discontinuity some historians claim – and the precise extent to which it radicalized the country – remain moot questions, but it undoubtedly changed many people’s lives and made some question how they had been governed before the conflict.1 The war also paved the way for Labour’s 1945 general election victory, one underpinned by the party’s claim that through a welfare state, the nationalization of key industries and extensive government planning it could make Britain a more equal society. The key political moment of the war came in late May and early June 1940 when Allied troops were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk. The fall of France soon followed, meaning Britain stood alone against Hitler’s forces and became vulnerable to invasion for the first time since Napoleon dominated Europe.

  • Women Directors in 'Global' Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism And
Women Directors in ‘Global’ Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism and Representation Despoina Mantziari PhD Thesis University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies March 2014 “This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution.” Women Directors in Global Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism and Aesthetics The thesis explores the cultural field of global art cinema as a potential space for the inscription of female authorship and feminist issues. Despite their active involvement in filmmaking, traditionally women directors have not been centralised in scholarship on art cinema. Filmmakers such as Germaine Dulac, Agnès Varda and Sally Potter, for instance, have produced significant cinematic oeuvres but due to the field's continuing phallocentricity, they have not enjoyed the critical acclaim of their male peers. Feminist scholarship has focused mainly on the study of Hollywood and although some scholars have foregrounded the work of female filmmakers in non-Hollywood contexts, the relationship between art cinema and women filmmakers has not been adequately explored. The thesis addresses this gap by focusing on art cinema. It argues that art cinema maintains a precarious balance between two contradictory positions; as a route into filmmaking for women directors allowing for political expressivity, with its emphasis on artistic freedom which creates a space for non-dominant and potentially subversive representations and themes, and as another hostile universe given its more elitist and auteurist orientation.

  • Oskar Werner (1922 – 1984)
November 1922 in Wien geboren.

December 2014 For immediate release MALBA announces its program of exhibitions and activities for 2015 MALBA announces its schedule of exhibitions for the 2015 season, the first under Agustín Pérez Rubio, the museum’s Artistic Director since May 2014. The program consists of three large-format exhibitions that, in keeping with the museum’s guidelines, include one exhibition centered on Argentine art, a second on art from the larger Latin American region, and a third exhibition of an international nature. Experiencia infinita [Infinite Experience], which will open on March 19, is the first exhibition of its sort to be held in a Latin America institution. This show, which features constructed situations by outstanding international artists, evidences the different ways the concept of “live works” has reached the exhibition space in recent decades. Participating artists include Elmgreen & Dragset [Michael Elmgreen (Copenhagen, Denmark, 1961) and Ingar Dragset (Trondheim, Norway, 1968)] , Dora García (Valladolid, Spain, 1965), Roman Ondák (Zilina, Slovakia, 1966), Diego Bianchi (Buenos Aires, 1969), Pierre Huyghe (Paris, 1962), Allora & Calzadilla [Jennifer Allora (Philadelphia, USA, 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (Havana, Cuba, 1971)], Tino Sehgal (London, UK, 1976), and Judi Werthein (Buenos Aires, 1967). Work on the second exhibition, in homage to Rogelio Polesello (Buenos Aires, 1939– 2014), began two years ago. The result of thorough research into and cataloguing of the artist’s personal archive, this exhibition will feature a selection of over eighty historical pieces produced between the late fifties and the seventies, as well as documents that attest to the contribution of the “young Polesello” to Latin American Op art and to the art-design- industry triad.
