Magdalena Kalupa

Magdalena Kalupa is a computer graphic designer who sometimes escapes into the world of fairy tales. She wrote and illustrated the book about Madlen, the not-very-tall (although her protagonist would certainly be angered to hear that) captain of the pirate ship for befriended children. They were delighted with this fairy tale. Magda designs posters, book covers and other interesting things, and her writing is as colorful and intriguing as her illustrations.

Magdalena Kalupa between us. collected poems PIRATE

Let me introduce you to Her Majesty, King of Pirates, Madlen. Does a pirate always have to be not a very nice man with a beard, a wooden leg and a parrot on his shoulder? Not at all. Let’s just think for a second – can a girl be the king of pirates? And please, do not correct us – it is the king, not the queen. Yes, yes! Madlen is the king of pirates and a conqueror of sea monsters. She is not afraid of anything; she defeated the evil Graybeard and took over his title, treasures and ship. She loves cases filled with valuables and always carries her rifle – although she rarely has the opportunity to use it. She likes to eat well and does not worry about conventions; in the end, she rode many waves. And this is what happened – during one of the storms, a very high wave washed her off the deck. The crew is left without its captain, and Madlen awaits many adventures. And besides, to a hundred rotten snails, this book is a must-read!

Franek, who in September began the last year in preschool, tells the story. We meet his group, friends, teachers, but also observe difficult situations that can happen to any child: jealousy of a friend’s feelings, quarrels in the group (and reaching agreement, forgiveness), rivalry, bragging... The young reader will experience the pre-school year with the group of pre-schoolers – from the start of school to St. Nicolas Day, Christmas, Easter, Children’s Day, end of the year, on trips, meetings with interesting people, in theater (all described with a great sense of humor). But the reader will also spend time with Frank in his home, where the adult world is a little too much for him, and yet he tries to understand it in his own way. Krzysztoń captures, with great sensitivity, the way a child sees and understands the world (also the “magical thinking” characteristic for this age). She shows how to deal with problems and gives solutions. An Invisible Boy is also an important book for parents. Seeing ourselves through the eyes of a child help us to be better.

Ewa Nowak A very white crow

The story begins like in a fairy tale: a quiet, nice Natalia meets the perfect boy who seems gentle, romantic and deeply in love with her. However, the seemingly perfect relationship between the two high school students becomes darker with every day. And Norbert slowly shows his real face of a jealous, possessive, quick-tempered and manipulative (not only Natalia) stalker. The girl is in love and cannot leave him. She prefers to explain his behaviors as proof of love he talks so beautifully about... This moving novel (not only for teenagers but also for their parents) perfectly illustrates the mechanisms of addiction and psychological abuse. It also shows a difficult but necessary way out of a toxic relationship and rebuilding the self-esteem. Ewa Nowak tells the story of Natalia with the great writing skills, while teaching young, sensitive people how to recognize the symptoms of psychological abuse and – most importantly – how to not hurt oneself.

Remigiusz Grzela A DOUBLE LIFE OF A REPORTER. FALLACI. TORAŃSKA

A long-awaited portrait of two outstanding journalists. Two exceptional women, two strong personalities, two outstanding journalists. Bold, uncompromising, extremely hard-working. Teresa Torańska was more empathetic – tough, but respected the standards; Oriana Fallaci was unscrupulous, with a harsh judgmental attitude. Sometimes they would pass each other on the reporter’s trail, but they never met. They talked with the directors and of history, trying to understand them to help their readers better perceive different phenomena and events. Nevertheless, they have not been able to change us – the shocking reports or outstanding novels have not impacted us, although they constitute an overly expressive memento. We forget that freedom is not given once and for all and that tolerance of hatred – also the one in the language – sooner or later leads to disaster.

Bartosz Janiszewski GRZESIUK. THE KING OF LIFE

The first biography of the Warsaw street bard. He said he wasn’t a writer, but he wrote three books that several million of Poles read. He said he wasn’t a musician, but he recorded dozens of songs in which he saved from oblivion the pre-war Warsaw. Stanisław Grzesiuk was the legendary bard of the Polish capital. Several generations of Poles have admired his characteristic voice, with which he sang the shady ballads of Warsaw suburbs. In his most famous book, Barefoot but with Spurs, he described the lost world of pre-war Warsaw and its feisty children. He was a child of Warsaw in love with his city, and became its symbol after death. It’s a book about a man who never drank because of sadness. He drank to celebrate life. And he lived to enjoy life, despite the terrible fate he suffered. In the poor pre-war Czerniaków district, in the hellish concentration camps, in sanatoriums and hospitals for tuberculosis care, he was the king of life everywhere. The author reached the relatives of Stanisław Grzesiuk and found unpublished stories and texts of the Warsaw bard. Years later, despite the widespread facts and stories, we learn the real story of the man who loved life so much that he did not want to give it to anyone.

Her diaries serve as the outline of the story, which after many years surprise with literary imagination and the accuracy of observation.

It can be said that I was a doctor almost from birth. I organized a hospital for all my dolls and teddy bears – and there were thirteen of them – because they were constantly ill, each suffering from a different disease. I had a small case to treat this whole bunch, with tools in it: scissors, syringes with needles, and earphones, sewing threads, and even curved needles I got from a shoemaker, to stitch up the wounds. [...] This is how I completed my elementary medical training. Excerpt from the book
