Robinson erhaps as early as the eighth century, in the Islamic East, the traditional Sanskrit tales about the Buddha’s enlightenment—about his recognition of his own mortality and training with an ascetic monk—were translated into Persian and Arabic. The Arabic version, entitled Bilawhar wa-Būdhāsaf, then served as Pthe basis for renderings into Georgian, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and a long list of European vernacular languages.1 These renderings were, more often than not, not straightforward translations but adaptations, often introducing significant modifications into the frame narrative. The Greek version, for example, transformed Bilawhar—an ascetic teacher—into Barlaam, a saintly Christian monk, and his disciple Budasaf or Yudasaf—the Buddha—into Joasaph or Josaphat, a saintly Christian Neophyte.2 The Hebrew version is no less surprising than the Greek, when Bilawhar be- comes not a Jewish sage but a Neoplatonic philosopher, and his 1 For the Arabic and Persian versions, see D. Thomas Ricklin, « Filosofia non è altro che amistanza a sapienza » Abstract: This is the opening speech of the SIEPM world Congress held in Freising in August 2012. It illustrates the general theme of the Congress – The Pleasure of Knowledge – by referring mainly to the Roman (Cicero, Seneca) and the medieval Latin and vernacular tradition (William of Conches, Robert Grosseteste, Albert the Great, Brunetto Latini), with a special emphasis on Dante’s Convivio. Nadja Germann, Logic as the Path to Happiness: Al-Fa-ra-bı- and the Divisions of the Sciences Abstract: Divisions of the sciences have been popular objects of study ever since antiquity. One reason for this esteem might be their potential to reveal in a succinct manner how scholars, schools or entire societies thought about the body of knowledge available at their time and its specific structure. However, what do classifications tell us about thepleasures of knowledge? Occasionally, quite a lot, par- ticularly in a setting where the acquisition of knowledge is considered to be the only path leading to the pleasures of ultimate happiness. This is the case for al-Fa-ra-b-ı (d. 950), who is at the center of this paper. He is particularly interesting for a study such as this because he actually does believe that humanity’s final goal consists in the attainment of happiness through the acquisition of knowledge; and he wrote several treatises, not only on the classification of the sciences as such, but also on the underlying epistemological reasons for this division. Thus he offers excellent insight into a 10th-century theory of what knowledge essentially is and how it may be acquired, a theory which underlies any further discussion on the topic throughout the classical period of Islamic thought. -

Mechanisms for the Transmission of Culture: The Role of “Place” in the Arts of Memory Mary Carruthers This essay will explore the organizing theme of this conference, translatio, as liter- ally as possible, taking it to indicate those cultural materials — linguistic, auditory, tactile, visual — that are “carried-across” from one place to another. From one place to another, and also one time to another, for translatio is profoundly the task of recol- lection. There are various mechanisms for bringing about such cultural transporta- tion, of course — material causes like codices and rolls, jewels and fabrics and pots in particular, things that can be carried from one place to another and that also carry across time. In the Middle Ages, however, these means of translation were spotty and uncertain at best. Far more frequently than a book or a token, the favored means of cultural translation, especially in the early Middle Ages, was apt to be a living, breathing, thinking and speaking person. A living human mind could even now be considered a possible form of “material culture,” though not one that most historians are very happy to consider, let alone rely on. People die too soon, for one thing. And they have “faulty” memories. Yet, in one of the most moving acts of his reign, when Charlemagne decided to collect a great library to build up the palace school of his court in Aachen, he did so first by bringing over from England a person. 1 Alcuin in turn collected a group of scholars about him, to form the palace school and thus to create the palace library. -

It focuses on the works of Peter Abelard, Bernard of Clairvaux, Richard of St. Victor, and Peter Lombard. It explores the multiplication of models used to think about the Trinity. These include the triad power-wisdom-goodness, images in the human soul, traces in visible creation, and interpersonal love. It argues that despite the tensions at the beginning of the period, the efforts of the theologians led toward a richer doctrine, notably toward the theory of Trinitarian appropriations. On the one side stood the masters, Abelard, Gilbert of Poitiers, and Peter Lombard, on the other, the monks, mostly Cistercians, William of Saint Thierry, Bernard of Clairvaux, and Joachim of Fiore. In the middle stood the canons regular Hugh, Achard, and Richard of Saint Victor, neither monks nor seculars, but religious and masters at the same time, who played the role of intermediary. -

Rhetoric, Philosophy and Politics in Ibn Khaldun’s Critique of Suªsm James Winston Morris Thoughtful and informed students of Ibn Khaldun’s Muqaddima (1377) are well aware that in many places his masterwork is anything but a straightforwardly objective or encyclopedic summary of the available histories and other Islamic sciences of his day. Instead, his writing throughout that unique work illustrates a highly complex, distinctive rhetoric that is constantly informed by the twofold focuses of his all- encompassing political philosophy. The ªrst and most obvious interest is discovering the essential preconditions for lastingly effective political and social organization—a task that involves far more than the outward passing forms of power. And the second is his ultimate end—the effec- tive reform of contemporary education, culture, and religion in direc- tions that would better encourage the ultimate human perfection of true scientiªc, philosophic knowing. In both of those areas, any understand- ing of Ibn Khaldun’s unique rhetoric—with its characteristic mix of multiple levels of meaning and intention expressed through irony, po- lemic satire, intentional misrepresentation and omissions, or equally un- expected inclusion and praise—necessarily presupposes an informed knowledge of the actual political, cultural, and intellectual worlds and corresponding attitudes and assumptions of various readers of his own time. It is not surprising that many modern-day students have over- looked or even misinterpreted many of the most powerful polemic ele- ments and intentions in his writing—elements that originally were often as intentionally provocative, shocking, and “politically incorrect” (in- deed frequently for very similar purposes) as the notorious writings of Nicolò Machiavelli (1536–1603) were in his time. -

John T. McNeill (1885-1975) was Professor of the History of European Christianity at the University of Chicago and then Auburn Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Henry P.
