Thursday, December 29, 2016 SPORTS B Monterey’s Norrod wins all-state honor

By SCOTT WILSON HERALD-CITIZEN Sports Staff

It was almost as if it was scripted. Spencer Norrod, the talented senior lineman at Monterey High School, has had a tremendous foot- ball career with the Wildcats. As a team, Norrod has helped Monterey win 24 games over the last four years and become a regional contender. Indi- vidually, he has won just about every honor avail- able in the state. So when Norrod heard that he was named an all-state offensive lineman in Class 1A by the Ten- nessee Sports Writers Association, he couldn’t be- lieve it. It was, he thought, the cherry on top of his football sundae. “I was really excited, especially with this being the third year in a row,” the soft-spoken Norrod said. “I am very proud for Spencer. It is another award he is very deserving of,” said Monterey coach Scott Hughes. “He has put a lot of time and effort into receiving that award. Honestly, I am not surprised he received the honor and I would have been disappointed if he didn’t get it.” The honor was voted on by media members Contributed | Mountain Press around the state.
