Race, Gender and Class in the Autobiography of Huey P. Newton 1
Race, gender and class in the autobiography of Huey P. 1 Newton Chloé Avril, University of Gothenburg “We’ll just have to get guns and be men”, such was the powerful rallying cry uttered by Black Panther member (and later leader) Elaine Brown in her 1969 song “The End of Silence”. I take Brown’s words as the point of departure for my article, since they seem to encapsulate much of what is at stake in relation to gender and the Black Power movement. Brown’s call to arms in “The End of Silence” immediately poses the question of the significance as well as the function of masculinity in the movement. It also highlights the link between masculinity and armed resistance. However, the use of the verb “to be” signals that “men” are the product of an action—getting guns—rather than a pre-existing subject performing the action, thus putting into question the automatic correlation between masculinity and the male body, a feeling reinforced by the words being uttered by the female voice of Elaine Brown. The contradictions and problematic aspects of the Black Power movement’s invocation of black masculinity, as well as the intersections of race, gender and class, will be at the core of this discussion. In order to explore these issues, I will focus on the autobiography of Black Panther leader Huey Newton, Revolutionary Suicide , where I will examine the tensions in this activist narrative’s construction of a racialized, classed and gendered self. Historical background As far as mainstream U.S. history goes, the Black Power movement has characteristically been understood as a distinct historical phenomenon following on, and breaking from the more widely accepted Civil Rights movement. -
POND, KRISTEN ANNE, Ph.D. the Impulse to Tell and to Know: the Rhetoric and Ethics of Sympathy in the Nineteenth-Century British Novel
POND, KRISTEN ANNE, Ph.D. The Impulse to Tell and to Know: The Rhetoric and Ethics of Sympathy in the Nineteenth-Century British Novel. (2010) Directed by Dr. Mary Ellis Gibson. 253 pp. My dissertation examines how some nineteenth-century British novels offer a critique of the dominant narrative of sympathy by suggesting that the most ethical encounter will preserve distance between self and other while retaining the ability to exchange sympathy in the face of difference. This distance prevents the problem of assimilation, the unethical practice of turning the other into the same that was a common way of performing sympathy in nineteenth century Britain. I propose that these critiques are best identified through a reading practice that utilizes discourse systems; the discourse systems I include are gossip, gazing, silence, and laughter. In the texts examined here (including Harriet Martineau's Deerbrook (1839), Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford (1851), George Eliot's Silas Marner (1861) and Daniel Deronda (1876), Charlotte Brontë's Villette (1853), and William Thackeray's Vanity Fair (1848)) one encounters each of the elements listed above as more than just plot devices or character markers. For example, gossip occurs in Martineau's and Gaskell's texts as a communicative act used by characters, as a rhetorical device used by narrators, and as a narrative technique used by the authors. The cumulative effect of gossip's engagement with social relations thus critiques unethical uses of sympathy and illustrates more ethical encounters between self and other, challenging, in some cases, the limits of sympathy as a technique for approaching difference. -

Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2017 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the relationship between the print novel and new media. It argues that this relationship is productive; that is, it locates the novel and new media within a tense, but symbiotic relationship. This requires an understanding of media relations that is ecological, rather than competitive. More precise, this dissertation investigates ways that the novel incorporates new media. The word “incorporate” refers both to embodiment and physical union. -

The Bad Writing Competition, or mastery through parody, is a deft solution—with some unexpected ancillary benefits. -

FEFF 23 will be taking place in Udine and online from Thursday 24 June to Friday 2 July. Press release for 9 June, 2021 For immediate publication/release UDINE – A throwdown is when you get knocked to the ground. It's an action, and even more a state of mind, that inspired one of Johnnie To's masterpieces and which perfectly captures the dynamics - social, political, health and emotional - of the last year and a half. There's no need to go over why - what we need, what we really need, is to stay focused on the "after" part. The action, and even more so the state of mind, that every throw down triggers: that instinct to get back up. The instinct to not stay down there, where the body blows of history have made us fall. That's the idea - we might even call it the operational philosophy - behind the Far East Film Festival 23: documenting the “after”. Showing a world, the world of Asian cinema, which refuses to resign itself to immobility and is intent on getting back on its feet again..
