HISTORISK TIDSKRIFT (Sweden) 130:2 • 2010 avhandlingsrecensioner En medeltida biskops janusansikte Per Stobaeus, Hans Brask: en senmedeltida biskop och hans tankevärld (Skellef- teå: Artos 2008). 467 s. (Summary in English: Hans Brask: a late mediaeval bishop and his universe.) Inledning ”Härtill är jag nödd och tvungen” – ett citat, inlärt av generationer av svenska skolbarn, som kanske är en av de mest bevingade fraserna från svensk medeltid. Citatet tillskrivs biskop Hans Brask, men troligtvis har det aldrig yttrats el- ler skrivits ned på just detta vis. Myter och legender är emellertid ofta mer seglivade än sanningar och orden återfinns än i dag i många sammanhang, vilket visar på deras kraft. Biskop Brask är också en av de mest fascinerande karaktä- rerna i brytningen mellan den katolska och den reformatoriska tiden i Sverige. Han är nu föremål för Per Stobaeus avhandling Hans Brask: en senmedeltida biskop och hans tankevärld. Den medeltida svenska kyrkan och dess biskopar, bland dem biskop Brask, har givetvis varit föremål för akademiska studier tidigare.1 Gemensamt för de flesta av dessa är deras koncentration på ekonomiska och politiska aspekter. Stobaeus är emellertid mer intresserad av hela den senmedeltida biskopsrollen och vill därför undersöka Brask som en fallstudie av biskopsrollens kulturella kontext. Centralt i avhandlingen är begreppet tankevärld, som Stobaeus vill analysera genom att studera biskop Brasks agerande och därigenom dra slut- satser om ett samhälle som i både tid och mentaliteter var väldigt avlägset vårt eget. Joseph M. Gonzalez 6 Fashioning Death: Clothing, Memory and Identity in 16th Century Swedish Funerary Practice Introduction King Gustav Vasa was married three times. In 1531, less than a decade after his election as King of Sweden, he made a match calculated to boost his prestige and help consolidate his position as king and married Katarina von Sax-Lauenburg, the daughter of Duke Magnus and a relative of the emperor. She bore the king one son, Erik, and died suddenly in 1535 (Svalenius, 1992). After her death, the king married the daughter of one of the most powerful noble houses in Sweden, Margareta Eriksdotter Leijonhufvud in 1536. Queen Margareta bore the king eight children before she died in 1551. By August of 1552, the fifty-six year old Gustav Vasa had found a new queen, the 16-year-old Katarina Gustavsdotter Stenbock, daughter of another of Sweden’s leading noble houses. Despite the youth of his bride, the marriage bore no children and the old king died eight years later (Svalenius, 1992). The king’s death occasioned a funeral of unprecedented magnificence that was unique both in its scale and in its promotion of the Vasa dynasty’s image and interests. Unique to Vasa’s funeral was the literal incorporation of the bodies of his two deceased wives in the ceremony. They shared his bed-like hearse on the long road to Uppsala and the single copper casket that was interred in the cathedral crypt. Six months after the funeral, Gustav Vasa’s son with Katarina von Sax-Lauenburg, Erik, was crowned king. -

Preface Late in March of this year I attended a lecture by Professor Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, where she presented a collaborative project, the Feral Atlas, an online repository of stories about the Anthropocene and how humans and nonhumans together make 01/19 worlds at scale. In her introductory remarks, she spoke of the demand often put forward by humanist colleagues to tell hopeful stories about the Anthropocene rather than view it as an undifferentiated destructive force slowly approaching a zero hour, a reckoning that will come too late. ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊIn her talk, Tsing spoke of the Anthropocene Michael Baers as “patchy,” with development arising in specific places and through specific human interventions, producing unforeseen ancillary A First Step effects (a conceptual framework that also structures her recent book, The Mushroom at the Towards a End of the World, an anthropological study of the international trade in matsutake mushrooms, a Regional Risk delicacy in Japan, that grows in “disturbed” forests). Tangherlini, Chair The academic study of Scandinavian culture and Scandinavian literature has long ignored the engagement of the Nordic nations in the tradition of drama and performance in medieval Europe. Early drama history scholars like Sophus Birket Smith and G.E. Klemming made claims about a perceived lack of practice based on limited sources and most of the scholars who followed them have accepted those claims as valid. Unfortunately, Birket Smith and Klemming were working with an incomplete corpus and nineteenth-century ideas about what constituted “drama”. Later scholars such as Frederick and Lise-Lone Marker and Terry Gunnell have made great headway in expanding the concept of drama and performance within the field of Scandinavian studies while also clarifying what texts we do, in fact, still have. -

These runes appear in works published in Italy between 1539 and 1555 either by or in connection with Johannes and Olaus Magnus. The books and the information about runes and runic inscriptions they contain are presented first. A closer look is then taken at the shapes of the runes used and at the roman letters they represent according to the books. It will be shown that these runes and their sound values can in part be traced back to a mediaeval runic tradition, while others were created to provide at least one rune for every roman letter. The forms of the newly “invented” runes can be explained to some extent by the influence of the shape of the roman letters they represent, whereas others were taken from a source that contained runes but did not provide any information about their sound values, namely the runic calendars. Det är nordens äldsta universitet och var vid tidpunkten världens nordligaste universitet. Domkyrkorna utbildade präster men för högre utbildningar var svenskar från 1200‐ talet och framåt tvungna att studera vid utländska universitet i till exempel Paris eller Rostock. Den starkast drivande kraften för bildandet av Uppsala universitet var Jakob Ulvsson som var Sveriges ärkebiskop mellan år 1469‐1515 och därmed den som innehaft ämbetet längst (46 år). Vid domkyrkan mot riddartorget finns en staty av Jakob Ulvsson av konstnären och skulptören Christian Eriksson. Statyns porträttlikhet med Ulvsson är förstås tvivelaktig eftersom man inte vet hur Jakob Ulvsson såg ut. Konstnären studerade i Paris tillsammans med Nathan Söderblom och det sägs att Eriksson hade honom som förebild för Ulvsson statyn och som därmed fick mycket lika ansiktsdrag som Söderblom. (Nathan Söderblom var ärkebiskop i Uppsala 1914‐ 1931, grundade den Ekumeniska rörelsen och fick Nobels fredspris 1930). Till en början bestod undervisningen vid Uppsala universitet främst av filosofi, juridik och teologi. Någon teknisk eller naturvetenskap utbildning fanns inte vid denna tidpunkt. -

Wittenberg Influences on the Reformation in Scandinavia by Simo Heininen, Otfried Czaika Wittenberg was the most important source of inspiration for the Reformation in both of the Scandinavian kingdoms, the Danish kingdom and the Swedish kingdom. In both kingdoms, the authorities played a defining role in the Reformation, though it proceeded very differently in these two Early Modern states. The Reformation became securely established most quickly – both politically and in terms of church law – in the Danish core territory. Sweden, on the other hand, was de facto already a Lutheran country before 1550, though it did not become Lutheran de jure also until the last decade of the 16th century. Particularly in the peripheral parts of Scandinavia (especially Norway and Iceland), the Reformation went hand in hand with closer political integration in Scandinavia and it was therefore adopted rather reluctantly by the population. Notes Indices Citation Political Background From 1397, the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden were united in a personal union (the so-called Kalmar Union) under Danish control (ᇄ Media Link #ab). In the early-16th century, the union was approaching its end. There were increasing tensions between Denmark and Sweden, the latter being governed by regents from the House of Sture. In November 1520, Christian II of Denmark (1481–1559) (ᇄ Media Link #ac), the last union king, was crowned for a second time in Stockholm. After the coronation festivities had been concluded, a heresy trial was staged with the help of the Archbishop of Uppsala and the accused were the supporters of the Sture party.
