Chapter I. the State System of Old Poland (Up to 1795)
Chapter I. The state system of Old Poland (up to 1795) § 1. Patrimonial monarchy I. The rise of the Polish state 1. The clan-tribe system and its collapse Pre-Polish tribes belonged among the Western Slavs. They arrived in the area located between the Oder and Bug rivers, on one hand, and the Carpathians and the Baltic Sea, on the other, during the Migration Period, most probably in the 6th century. The basic unit of Slav society was the clan. Initially, it included all those who originated from the same ancestor (agnatic), but with time a clan which consisted of relatives on both the father’s and the mother’s side (cognat- ic) became predominant. It served religious, military, economic, social, as well as protective purposes. Usually, the members of the clan inhabited a single set- tlement. The clan consisted of families. A number of clans would form a tribe, which was based on common ances- try as well, but also served state functions. The state-forming process started first within the so-calledsmall tribes inhabiting an area of up to 10,000 sq. km. These would combine to form a larger structure, i.e. the large tribe, which comprised a loose association of multiple small tribes. This process became more evident especially in the 8th century. Tribal associations formed in such a way occupied an area of up to 40,000 sq. km. The most important ones were: the Vistulans, the Polans, the Goplans, the Lendians, the Silesians, the Masovi- ans and the Pomeranians. Superior authority in a small tribal state was held by the veche (congress). -

Yaklaşık iki yüzyıl boyunca İspanyollar, ardından da Fas hükümeti tarafından ilhak edilmek istenen bölge, halen dünyanın çözülememiş jeopolitik sorunlarından birisidir. Batı Sahra’nın bağımsızlığı Polisario Cephesi liderliğinde yetmişli yıllardan bu yana örgütlü olarak yürütülmektedir. A Polish Ethno-Religion? Some Thoughts on the Baptism of Poland and Contemporary National Identity
Zoon Politikon 8/2017 DOI: 10.4467/2543408XZOP.17.006.9264 A POLISH ETHNO-RELIGION? SOME THOUGHTS ON THE BAPTISM OF POLAND AND CONTEMPORARY NATIONAL IDENTITY * Rafał Pankowski Abstract The aim of the paper is to look at the baptism of Poland as a one of the ele- ments used to built Polish national identity. The foucus is on the Piast era in Polish history and the role which baptism played in incorporating Poles into latin civilistation. The articles also discusses the modern references to impor- tance of 10th and 11th century events in building 21st century of the national identity discourse. Keywords: Identity, nation, religion, baptism, civilization * Dr hab. Rafał Pankowski, prof. CC Collegium Civitas, Collegium Civitas, [email protected] 127 A Polish ethno-religion? Some thoughts on the baptism of Poland and contemporary national identity The baptism of Poland in 966 is commonly seen as the symbolic begin- ning of the Polish state and Polish history. Many facts around the bap- tism of Prince Mieszko’s state are unclear today, but its significance as the symbolic beginning of Polish statehood remains unquestioned. The facts, however, do not need to concern us too much here. It has become a cornerstone of what was to become known as Polish identity and has determined several important aspects of its formation well into the pre- sent day. Much energy has been invested – in terms of Polish historical schol- arship and political writings – in the idea of Poland’s belonging to “Latin civilization”. Historically speaking, the claim cannot be taken lit- erally if “Latin civilization” means the lands which had been conquered, or directly influenced, by the culture of the Roman Empire. -
Did Silesia Constitute an Economic Region Between the 13Th and the 15Th Centuries? a Survey of Region-Integrating and Region-Disintegrating Economic Factors
Grzegorz Myśliwski University of Warsaw Did Silesia constitute an economic region between the 13th and the 15th centuries? A survey of region-integrating and region-disintegrating economic factors Abstract: This article constitutes an attempt at answering the question of whether Silesia, aside from being a distinct historical region, was also a distinct economic region. The author starts with Robert E. Dickinson’s theory of economic regions, the basic assumptions of which are shared by contempo- rary researchers of regional economies. Economic resources, the similar economic policies of Silesian rulers in the 13th and 14th centuries, high levels of urbanization in comparison to neighbouring regions and the centralizing capacity of Wrocław are considered to be the forces which bound together Silesian as an economic region. Factors retard- ing the economic cohesion of Silesia were analyzed as well. Those included natural disasters, inva- sions, internal strife, criminal activity along trade routes and a crisis in the mining industry beginning in the middle of the 14th century. Beginning with the final years of the 13th century, Silesia stabilized as an economic region containing Upper Silesia, Lower Silesia and Opava. This was not, however, a perfect cohesion, as Lower Silesia was economically superior to the other regions, which themselves had strong ties to Lesser Poland. Despite that, the crisis that took place from about 1350 until 1450 did not break the economic bonds between these three constituent elements of Silesia. In comparison to every historical and economic region on its borders, Silesia was distinguished by its advanced gold mining industry, the export of a red dyeing agent (marzanna) as well as the highest number of cities with a populations of between 3,000 and 14,000. -

As pioneers, the first Hebrew printers laid the groundwork for all the achievements to come, setting standards of typography and textual authenticity that still inspire admiration and awe.1 But it was in the sixteenth century that the Hebrew book truly came of age, spreading to new centers of culture, developing features that are the hallmark of printed books to this day, and witnessing the growth of a viable book trade. And it was in the sixteenth century that many classics of the Jewish tradition were either printed for the first time or received the form by which they are known today.2 The Library of Congress holds 675 volumes printed either partly or entirely in Hebrew during the sixteenth century. -

Assessing the Climate Change Impact on the North African Offshore Surface Wind and Coastal Low-Level Jet Using Coupled and Uncoupled Regional Climate Simulations
Climate Dynamics https://doi.org/10.1007/s00382-018-4565-9 Assessing the climate change impact on the North African offshore surface wind and coastal low-level jet using coupled and uncoupled regional climate simulations Pedro M. M. Soares1 · Daniela C. A. Lima1 · Alvaro Semedo2 · Rita M. Cardoso1 · William Cabos3 · Dmitry V. Sein4,5 Received: 23 February 2018 / Accepted: 3 December 2018 © The Author(s) 2018 Abstract The North African Coastal Low-Level Jet (NACLLJ) is a semi-permanent feature offshore the north western African coast, linked to the cold nearshore upwelling of the Canary Eastern Boundary Current system. Its main synoptic drivers are the Azores Anticyclone over the ocean and the inland Sahara thermal low. The coastal jet events occur in one of the world’s most productive fisheries region, thus the evaluation of the effects of global warming in its properties is imperative. This study proposes an analysis of the annual and intra-annual attributes of the NACLLJ for two time periods 1976–2005 (his- torical) and 2070–2199 (future), resorting to coupled and uncoupled atmosphere–ocean simulations with the ROM model, as well as near surface offshore wind speed from the CORDEX-Africa ensemble. The future simulations follow the RCP8.5 greenhouse gas emissions scenario. Overall, the ROM coupled simulation presents the best performance in reproducing the present-climate near surface wind speed, offshore northwest Africa, compared to the remaining RCM simulations. The higher SST resolution in the coupled simulations favours much localised colder upwelling strips near the coast and conse- quently stronger jets. In future climate, a small increase in the surface wind speed is projected, mainly linked to the regions of coastal jet presence.
