Exploring Canzone Napoletana and Southern Italian Migration Through Three Lenses John L. Vitale Preamble and Purpose As a first-generation Italian-Canadian, the southern Italian immigrant experience has figured centrally in my upbringing. I have vivid memories of the rich and vibrant conversations that transpired at the dinner table every day. There were countless tales of my parents’ childhood, which included living in impoverished conditions and surviving the devastation of the Second World War. Other common topics of conversation included crossing the Atlantic, being separated from family, and the daily struggles of immigrating to an English-speaking country. At the very core of these conversations, however, was music, particularly the form of popular song that emanated out of Naples in the 19th and 20th centuries, otherwise known as the canzone napoletana. These songs of love, laughter, sorrow, and pain—famous the world over— have always been a genuine and sincere portal into the heart, mind, and soul of the southern Italian immigrant experience in Canada. The purpose of this article is threefold. First, through a biographical lens, this article investigates my own personal experiences as a first-generation Italian-Canadian and explores how post-World War II southern Italian immigrants in Toronto, Canada used the canzone napoletana as a coping mechanism for the daily hardships and struggles of immigrant life. Second, through the lens of the Italian Diaspora, this article investigates how Neapolitan song became the metaphorical voice for the vast majority of southern Italian immigrants around the world. Lastly, through the lens of non-Italians, this article examines how the canzone napoletana influenced non-Italian perceptions about Italy on a global scale. -

31^ LEZIONE DI ROCK (1^ ANNO 2017/2018) Al termine delle vacanze, che spero siano trascorse nel miglior modo possibile per tutti, ritorna puntuale il nostro appuntamento ludico/culturale con i protagonisti della nostra musica. Ormai siano giunti al quarto anno dei nostri incontri, che hanno suscitato vivo interesse, tracciando umilmente la storia del “rock”, a partire dai canti degli schiavi/afro americani, di metà ottocento, e ripercorrendo le gesta dei padri fondatori, fino all’ascolto guidato e partecipato, di “ragtime”, “jazz”, “blues”, “country”, declinato dai solisti, ma anche dalle grandi orchestre, ed approdando al “rock and roll”, ed al mito di Elvis. Sono state raccontate poi, con taglio monografico e/o tematico, le vicende di gruppi o solisti che hanno fatto la leggenda del “rock”, quali “Beatles”, “Rolling Stones”, Bob Dylan, “Led Zeppelin”, “Pink Floyd”, e tanti altri, oltre a narrare eventi che hanno caratterizzato la societa’ ed il costume, oltreché la musica, quali il “Festival di Woodstock”, o quello dell’ “Isola di Wight”. Si è poi trattato dei vari generi che hanno trovato multiformi espressioni nell’ambito del “rock”, quali l’ “hard/rock”, il “folk/rock”, il “blues/rock”, il “progressive/rock”, non trascurando di analizzare il panorama italiano, che seppur con un certo ritardo, ha trovato un suo spazio, anche internazionale, grazie a gruppi quali “P.F.M.”, “BANCO” “ORME”, ECC, ECC. Una lezione è stata dedicata alle “donne del rock”, con l’ascolto di Aretha Franklin, Tina Tuner, Joan Baez, e la mitica Janis Joplin, fino alla trattazione di Joni Mitchell, Sandy Denny, Patti Smith, chiudendo il tema, con la “chicca” delle “Heart”, sorelle statunitensi che hanno reso omaggio ai “Led Zeppelin”, con una stratosferica versione di “Stairway To Heaven”, nel dicembre del 2012, ai “Kennedy Center Honors”, alla presenza del presidente Obama e consorte, e degli stessi “Zeppelin”. -

“Terra Viva” di Luigi Libra: “La Campania non è soltanto Terra dei Fuochi e Gomorra” Dopo molti anni dedicati alla canzone classica napoletana, il cantautore Luigi Libra presenta il suo primo cd di brani inediti. S’intitola Terra Viva ed è un omaggio alla vitalità della Campania, di Napoli e della sua gente. “La mia terra non è soltanto Terra dei Fuochi e Gomorra, ma è soprattutto una Terra viva” spiega l’artista, noto al pubblico televisivo per aver affiancato a lungo Paolo Limiti in diversi programmi, che ha sentito il bisogno di valorizzare gli aspetti positivi della regione in cui è nato e di offrire una narrazione diversa a quella diffusasi negli ultimi anni. “O’Sole Ca Coce” il nome del singolo in promozione radio. Non è un album di denuncia, ma di speranza – sottolinea Luigi Libra – La Campania per me fatta di gente dalla bell’anima, di terreni e panorami incontaminati e di prodotti di eccellenza, di terra viva appunto”. Il cofanetto che include il cd e il documentario inspirato agli stessi temi delle canzoni, sarà presentato a Napoli, al Teatro Mediterraneo, presso la Mostra D’Oltremare, alle ore 21.00, il 18 dicembre (ingresso gratuito a invito). Il cd contiene 11 brani più una bonus-track dal titolo “Il suo nome è Paolo Limiti”, dedicato al conduttore televisivo, eseguiti con Mariano Bellopede (pianoforte), Corrado Calignano (basso), Fabio Malfi (batteria), Andrea Palazzo (chitarra), Ciccio Merolla, Rosario Scotti di Carlo e Gabriele Borrelli (percussioni), Gianfranco Campagnoli (fiati) e 12 elementi d’orchestra diretti da Arcangelo Michele Casu. Nelle sue canzoni, Luigi Libra, insignito nel 2016 dal Sindaco Luigi de Magistris della carica di Ambasciatore della canzone napoletana nel mondo, fonde diversi generi, dal classic napoletano al soul, dal rhythm and blues al pop mediterraneo, e alterna il dialetto all’italiano all’inglese Il cd è stato registrato nel GIDIESSE Studio di Napoli e masterizzato presso 3Sixty Studio di Nino Viola a Dortmund in Germania. -
