Berry season is nearly here in the Pacific Northwest. It will be a sweet reward after the dreary, water-logged winter and spring we have endured this year. My newly planted raspberry canes won’t be ready to harvest this year, so I’ve scouted out local U-Pick berry farms to get our fill. And this year, I plan to put up some jam to get us through to next season. I learned to can from my younger sis- ter, Caroline. As an avid gardener and cre- ative maker in many ways, canning quickly became one of her favorite activities when a friend taught her to can chutneys, jams, salsas, and more. (She and her now-husband Ethan both love to can together; they even made 200+ jams as their wedding favors two years ago.) She shared her new hobby with me one autumn afternoon with a couple half-pint jars of tomato jam, and I was totally hooked. Our canning adventures have even inspired our mom to take up canning again! Norway Day and Svenskarnas Dag have a long tradition of holding separate events for over 80 years but after joining together the past 2 years, these two groups are again working together to bring the best of both and make an even bigger and better ethnic celebration for the Norwegians and Swedes and the Scandinavian community.

I spent a few days asking around, and it seems that nobody’s entirely sure where Tromsø’s nickname “Paris of the North” comes from. Never mind; it’s a worthy nickname. Not for the looks, not for the climate, and not for the food nor the wine, but for the cultural importance of this city of just 75,000 people high up in the Norwegian Arctic. Despite the small population, Tromsø is the biggest city for hundreds of miles around. In fact, after the Russian cities of Murmansk and Norilsk, it is the biggest city north of the Arctic Circle anywhere in the world.

The Flekkefjord Line, a branch of the Sørlandet Line located in southern Norway’s Vest-Agder County, first opened in 1904 and connected Flekkefjord with Sira for most of the century. Until December 31, 1990, that is, when the final train journey along the rail- way line was made. Although the Flekkefjord Line has been shut down for almost 30 years now, the orga- nization Flekkefjordbanens Venner has been working tirelessly to preserve the railway with the hope of developing it into a living museum. To share their love for the abandoned line, the organization rents out railbikes— large bicycles that attach to the rails—also known as draisines. Each summer, tourists and locals alike pedal their way along the 17-kilometer railway.
