Hanes Hosiery Mills Company was established in 1901. Hanes was an early adoptor of manufacturing hosiery which was created in 1938. Hanes Hosiery Mills researched and developed seamless by the mid-1960s. This collection contains twenty-four stereoviews of the Hanes Hosiery Mills Company Winston-Salem manufacturing plant and offices.

Historical Note

Hanes Hosiery Mills Company was established in 1901 as Shamrock Mills, operating out of Winston- Salem, . In 1914 the company's name changed and in 1918 the manufacturing focus shifted from men's to women's socks.

Hanes was an early adoptor of manufacturing nylon hosiery which was created in 1938. Hanes Hosiery Mills researched and developed seamless pantyhose by the mid-1960s.

In 1965 Hanes Hoisery Mills Co. and P. H. Hanes Knitting Company mergered to form the Hanes Corporation, which was subsumed by the Sara Lee Corporation in 1979. The Hanes division continues to operate its headquarters in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Biographical Note

Floyd Hollenbeck (1920-2002) worked for Trimfit Hosiery, a distribution company for Hanes Hosiery Mills Company. Hollenbeck worked out of Los Angeles, California and seemed to have covered a fairly large sales region on the west coast. He would travel to various department stores contract with them to sell Hanes Hosiery.

Scope and Content

This collection contains twenty-four stereoviews of the Hanes Hosiery Mills Company Winston-Salem manufacturing plant and offices. The stereoviews were used to demonstrate how nylon were made. The sales kit was used around the time that nylon pantyhose ceased to have seams down the back. The process of making seamless stockings differed from the previous method. The images show workers performing various tasks throughout the manufacturing process. The collection also includes the stereoviewer, stereoviewer instruction booklet and Floyd Hollenbeck's business card.
