National History Day is a non-profit organization which promotes history education for secondary and elementary education students. The program has grown into a national program since its humble beginnings in Cleveland, Ohio in 1974. Today over half a million students participate in National History Day each year, encouraged by thousands of dedicated teachers. Students select a historical topic related to a theme chosen each year. They conduct primary and secondary research on their chosen topic through libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and interviews. Students analyze and interpret their sources before presenting their work in original papers, exhibits, documentaries, websites, or performances. Students enter their projects in contests held each spring at the local, state, and national level where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest, held on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park each June. -

The Legacy of Commodore David Porter, USN: Midshipman David Glasgow Farragut Part One of a three-part series Vice Admiral Jim Sagerholm, USN (Ret.), September 15, 2020 blueandgrayeducation.org David Glasgow Farragut | National Portrait Gallery In any discussion of naval leadership in the Civil War, two names dominate: David Glasgow Farragut and David Dixon Porter. Both were sons of David Porter, one of the U.S. Navy heroes in the War of 1812, Farragut having been adopted by Porter in 1808. Farragut’s father, George Farragut, a seasoned mariner from Spain, together with his Irish wife, Elizabeth, operated a ferry on the Holston River in eastern Tennessee. David Farragut was their second child, born in 1801. Two more children later, George moved the family to New Orleans where the Creole culture much better suited his Mediterranean temperament. Through the influence of his friend, Congressman William Claiborne, George Farragut was appointed a sailing master in the U.S. Navy, with orders to the naval station in New Orleans, effective March 2, 1807. George Farragut | National Museum of American David Porter | U.S. Naval Academy Museum History The elder Farragut traveled to New Orleans by horseback, but his wife and four children had to go by flatboat with the family belongings, a long and tortuous trip lasting several months. A year later, Mrs. Farragut died from yellow fever, leaving George with five young children to care for. The newly arrived station commanding officer, Commander David Porter, out of sympathy for Farragut, offered to adopt one of the children. The elder Farragut looked to the children to decide which would leave, and seven-year-old David, impressed by Porter’s uniform, volunteered to go. -

THE WAR OF 1812 MAGAZINE ISSUE 26 December 2016 Appendix I War of 1812 Chronology Compiled by Ralph Eshelman and Donald Hickey Introduction This War of 1812 Chronology includes all the major events related to the conflict beginning with the 1797 Jay Treaty of amity, commerce, and navigation between the United Kingdom and the United States of America and ending with the United States, Weas and Kickapoos signing of a peace treaty at Fort Harrison, Indiana, June 4, 1816. While the chronology includes items such as treaties, embargos and political events, the focus is on military engagements, both land and sea. It is believed this chronology is the most holistic inventory of War of 1812 military engagements ever assembled into a chronological listing. Don Hickey, in his War of 1812 Chronology, comments that chronologies are marred by errors partly because they draw on faulty sources and because secondary and even primary sources are not always dependable.1 For example, opposing commanders might give different dates for a military action, and occasionally the same commander might even present conflicting data. Jerry Roberts in his book on the British raid on Essex, Connecticut, points out that in a copy of Captain Coot’s report in the Admiralty and Secretariat Papers the date given for the raid is off by one day.2 Similarly, during the bombardment of Fort McHenry a British bomb vessel's log entry date is off by one day.3 Hickey points out that reports compiled by officers at sea or in remote parts of the theaters of war seem to be especially prone to ambiguity and error. -

By no means did shipboard life completely extract them from the prejudices of a white-dominated culture, but it often provided them with better opportunities than they had on land. Like their fellow white sailors, black seamen in the Early Republic could count on stable pay with the benefit of room and board. For many, sea service and its pay provided a path to a better life ashore. Because race was not specifically noted in U.S. Navy personnel records at the time, much remains unknown about these men. However, a survey of the status of life for free blacks on shore sheds light on why some may have found seafaring an attractive opportunity. -

(Kent, Ohio: Kent State Uni- versity Press, 1991. Pp. vi, 154. Maps, tables, bibliographies, notes, index. Clothbound, $29.00; paperbound, $17.50.) This.smal1 (just over 100 pages of text), expensive book is a mixed bag. Composed of ten disparate essays, which came out of a 1988 conference in Windsor, Ontario, commemorating the battle of Lake Erie, the book is perhaps more useful for its bibliographic information than for its substantive essays. The introduction con- tains a page or two setting the stage for the conference, very short descriptions of the ten essays, and some editorial caveats. Each es- say runs about a dozen pages, with the first, by Gerald T. Altoff, giving a short, albeit lively, description of the battle itself. Unfor- tunately, there are no maps, no diagrams, no illustrations of any kind to assist the reader in understanding the actions. (In fact, it is not until the fourth essay that the reader encounters the book’s only map pertaining to the battle.) The essay by Frederick C. Drake is a fascinating, if arcane, accounting of the relative artillery strength of the two squadrons, in which Drake concludes that the American commander, Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry, not only had superiority in car- ronades but in long guns as well. Building on this contention, W. A. B. Douglas concludes that Perry’s British opposite, Captain Rob- ert Heriot Barclay, and his tiny navy did the best that they could and preserved the “honor of the flag.” Dennis Carter-Edwards’s es- say deals with the strategic necessity of the battle and the conse- quences of it. -

From supplying Portsmouth and the navy with cider in the 17th and early 18th centuries through to being the home of several naval establishments during the Second World War, Havant has always played its part in supporting the navy. Even today Portsmouth dockyard, though not with the volume it once was, is a leading employer to the people of the Havant area. With local hi-tec firms such as Lockheed Martin Havant still plays its part in supporting the navy. Because of its close proximity to Portsmouth it is not surprising that many a naval officer chose Havant and its neighbourhood for their homes. Men of the calibre of Admiral Sir John Acworth Ommaney of Warblington House, Emsworth Road, Admiral Sir James Stirling of Belmont Park, Bedhampton, and Vice-Admiral Charles Norcock of Sherwood, East Street, have all at one time chosen to live in Havant. -
