INDIANA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY Volume LI JUNE,1955 Number 2 Hoosier Senior Naval Officers in World War I1 John B. Heffermn* Indiana furnished an exceptional number of senior of- ficers to the United States Navy in World War 11, and her sons were in the very forefront of the nation’s battles, as casualty lists and other records testify. The official sum- mary of casualties of World War I1 for the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, covering officers and men, shows for Indiana 1,467 killed or died of wounds resulting from combat, 32 others died in prison camps, 2,050 wounded, and 94 released prisoners of war. There were in the Navy from Indiana 9,412 officers (of this number, probably about 6 per- cent or 555 were officers of the Regular Navy, about 10 per- cent or 894 were temporary officers promoted from enlisted grades of the Regular Navy, and about 85 percent or 7,963 were Reserve officers) and 93,219 enlisted men, or a total of 102,631. In the Marine Corps a total of 15,360 officers and men were from Indiana, while the Coast Guard had 229 offic- ers and 3,556 enlisted men, for a total of 3,785 Hoosiers. Thus, the overall Indiana total for Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard was 121,776. By way of comparison, there were about 258,870 Hoosiers in the Army.l There is nothing remarkable about the totals and Indiana’s representation in the Navy was not exceptional in quantity; but it was extraordinary in quality. -

National History Day is a non-profit organization which promotes history education for secondary and elementary education students. The program has grown into a national program since its humble beginnings in Cleveland, Ohio in 1974. Today over half a million students participate in National History Day each year, encouraged by thousands of dedicated teachers. Students select a historical topic related to a theme chosen each year. They conduct primary and secondary research on their chosen topic through libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and interviews. Students analyze and interpret their sources before presenting their work in original papers, exhibits, documentaries, websites, or performances. Students enter their projects in contests held each spring at the local, state, and national level where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest, held on the campus of the University of Maryland at College Park each June. -

Both were sons of David Porter, one of the U.S. Navy heroes in the War of 1812, Farragut having been adopted by Porter in 1808. Farragut’s father, George Farragut, a seasoned mariner from Spain, together with his Irish wife, Elizabeth, operated a ferry on the Holston River in eastern Tennessee. David Farragut was their second child, born in 1801. Two more children later, George moved the family to New Orleans where the Creole culture much better suited his Mediterranean temperament. Through the influence of his friend, Congressman William Claiborne, George Farragut was appointed a sailing master in the U.S. Navy, with orders to the naval station in New Orleans, effective March 2, 1807. George Farragut | National Museum of American David Porter | U.S. Naval Academy Museum History The elder Farragut traveled to New Orleans by horseback, but his wife and four children had to go by flatboat with the family belongings, a long and tortuous trip lasting several months. A year later, Mrs. Farragut died from yellow fever, leaving George with five young children to care for. The newly arrived station commanding officer, Commander David Porter, out of sympathy for Farragut, offered to adopt one of the children. The elder Farragut looked to the children to decide which would leave, and seven-year-old David, impressed by Porter’s uniform, volunteered to go. -

THE LIBERTY SHIPS OF WORLD WAR II Their Union County and Other Carolina Connections by Bill Lee Dedicated to the men of the American Merchant Marine and the United States Naval Armed Guard who sailed in harm’s way in Liberty Ships during World War II … …and who did not return. 2 ~ INTRODUCTION ~ America’s wartime merchant fleet made one of the more important contributions to victory in World War II. An all-volunteer civilian workforce of Merchant Mariners sailed thousands of vessels in harm’s way throughout that global conflict. These men paid a high price for their success, suffering the highest casualty rate of any service. Without their support, our armed forces could not have even gotten overseas, much less been properly supplied as they fought their way to victory. A major element of America’s wartime merchant fleet was a huge class of vessels known as the Liberty Ships. More Liberty Ships were built than any other class of sea-going vessels in the history of the world. Numbering 2,710, they were all mass-produced in less than five years. This astounding accomplishment took place in the middle of a world war that placed extreme demands on the capabilities of the United States and its allies. Not only did the men and women of America build Liberty Ships at an unprecedented rate, they also first constructed entire new shipyards for the sole purpose of building Liberty Ships. One of these shipyards was in North Carolina. Two others were built and successfully operated by Charlotteans who had no prior experience in shipbuilding. -

Turkish Navy Programmes Transformation of a Regional Naval Power
NAVAL PLANS TURKISH NAVY PROGRAMMES TRANSFORMATION OF A REGIONAL NAVAL POWER As the Turkish Naval Force (TNF) updates its fleet with new domestically built frigates, corvettes, patrol craft, landing ships, and sub marines, the country's ship building industry is undergoing a radical o'ansfonnation (seejiglll'e 1), For the first time, Turkish yards are being tasked with building highly sophisticated, modern warships in num bers. As domestic naval construction capabilities ramp up to the anticipated TF -2000 Air Defence Frigate, industry will have to provide designers, engi neers, and skilled workers in the highly complex systems integration and con struction techniques necessitated by the advanced designs scheduled to enter the fleet during the next 15 years. ENTHUSIASM FLOATS .. , The TNF will be one of the best·equipped sea services in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region. Technological and capability gaps are being filled by new acquisitions. During the Cold War years of the 20th CentUlY, Turkey was a key ally in the NATO southeastern strategy of bottling up the Russian Navy within the Black Sea. No longer facing an imminent threat to the nation's maritime interests, now Turkey expands its hori zon to act regionally and as a NATO member to the Black Sea Force Fig. 1: The contract for the prototype MfLGEM corvette named TCG "Heybeliada" (F 511) (BLACKSEAFOR) in addition to broader was awarded to Istanbul Naval Shipyard in 2006.
