Brenner’s enthusiasms—civil engi- neering, bridges, life in general, sports, special occasions—are artfully matched with a Twain-like love for poking fun at popular culture, self- important specialists, and his own foibles. Civil engineers like Brenner are known for taking future wives on “bridge dates” and stopping the car on family vacations to photograph notable bridge crossings. Just as important, however, Brenner is a credible, knowledgeable engineer whose passion for bridges has led him to study them carefully and to think deeply about how and what they span. Brenner can be linked to another bridge engineer, Thomas Tel- ford. Telford supervised the design and construction of more than 1,000 bridges and roads in Scotland and England; he was also the first president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the British equivalent of ASCE. Similarly, Brenner has been involved in the engineering of doz- ens of bridges, has visited many more, and teaches bridge design. He is also active in ASCE, serving on technical committees and as editor (suc- cessively) of two ASCE journals. In this appreciation volume about bridges, I am very glad to read a discussion of bridge history. Brenner’s travels take us to covered bridges across New England and a rest-home park for retired truss bridges. In many of these essays, you will read about beautiful old bridges that grace the landscape and serve as silent sentinels of our past. In Brenner’s opti- mistic and often funny take on the bridge future, the glow of the bridge past is always present. This is how it should be—we engineers stand on the shoulders of giants. I hope you enjoy Bridginess. And now I must go—I am late for a bridge date. I’ll take my camera, and I won’t leave it on top of the car. —Jerry R. Rogers, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE This page intentionally left blank Marina Bay in Summer The best outdoor palm trees around Boston, and maybe the only out- door palm trees around Boston, can be found at Marina Bay in Quincy. Marina Bay is a recently constructed planned development on Boston Harbor just south of the city. The development features condominiums, offices, support facilities for the boats in the marina, and a waterfront boardwalk lined with restaurants and shops. Adjacent to the boardwalk is an outdoor music nightclub, where the palm trees are planted at the entrance gate. The palm trees are guests only for the warm season. They pack up and migrate south soon after the arrival of the first fall nip. On a warm summer night, Marina Bay is the place to be around Boston. Calypso music and “Dirty Water” play at the nightclub. The sound echoes off the buildings and the bay, all the way to Spectacle Island. A party is going on at the docks. Boat owners pass around cheese platters and sip white wine while lounging on their aft decks. The board- walk is busy with strollers of all ages who come to see the scene and feel the cool breeze off the harbor. Once it’s warm enough, the restaurants open their outdoor seating areas on the boardwalk, and the places are packed. Strollers, boaters, and diners gawk at the boats, the bay, and each other. One of the bars has large TV screens facing the boardwalk deck, where everyone participates in the essential Boston summer ritual of watching the Red Sox.

Literature was explored in relation to national identity, migration, consumer culture theory, consumer acculturation, diaspora theory, memory and nostalgia and food consumption and identity. The study used a qualitative research approach to address the issues under investigation. Interviews were used to collect data based on the understanding that food patterns and identity construction are context driven. The findings indicate that the food experiences of the Zimbabwean inbetweeners were specific to this group.

RESTAURANTS OF SEATTLE 1853-1960 u « by Mrs. Hattie Graham Horrocks RESTAURANTS OF SEATTLE 1853-1960 Yesler1s Cookhouse, built in 1853 at the foot of ML11 Street, was really the first restaurant in the little village of Seattle. Everyone was welcome whether he could pay or not. Henry Yesler would not let anybody be hungry. Dr. David Maynard, as Justice of the Peace, held his first trial therej religious services were held in the cookhouse; it was the lounging place for the men when they met to exchange the news of the day or while away the evenings at cards or telling stories; the volunteers and naval officers on the Sound made it their rendezvous; Judge Landers set up his office in one corner of the dining room; it was sometimes used as a jail. Within its weathered and smoke-blackened walls men "ate, drank, sang, prayed, wept, and slept• " Their dreams in the cookhouse saw a forest cleared and a city built. From then Seattle began to shape and plans were made for trade with distant lands. Long after all the log cabins had been replaced in the town, the cookhouse was left standing, the only log house in the business district. It was finally torn down in 1866 and it was mourned by those who felt it had been their friend. Later Henry Yesler built a pavilion which was used for all gatherings but church for many years. Dr. Maynard!s funeral-was held there in 1873* The Felker House, built by Captain Felker in 1853* who saw the need of a rooming house, when he made trips to Seattle from San Francisco, was located at Commercial and Jackson Streets.

The Boone County Journal May 14, 2021 1 FREE y Subscribe Online www.boonecountyjournal.com Friday • May 14, 2021 Vol. 26, Issue 2 • No. 1302 The Belvidere Oasis by Charles Herbst Ask someone from Chicago, Madison or just about any other place in the Midwest what they associate with Belvidere, Illinois. For those that know anything of Belvidere, two images come to mind: Oasis and Chrysler Plant. These folks will freely admit they have only driven by and have never been to Belvidere proper. They haven’t the faintest idea that Jeeps are made in Belvidere, and they generally have no idea where “Boone County” is, although they know it is “out there somewhere, maybe near Grundy” because they’ve heard both referred to on the weather reports. They have never heard of the Boone County Fair, nor is it a place they would likely attend. They have no animus toward us, but Belvidere and Boone County are as completely foreign to them as Timbuktu. Conversely, the Belvidere Oasis, the county’s most famous asset, is a black box for most of Belvidere and Boone County. The Oasis is the number one local source of fuel tax revenue and one of the largest generators of local sales Fred Harvey at the Illinois Tollway Oasis tax. But it’s not a place that anyone from Boone County even thinks about, let alone visits. When comprehensive plans are drawn and tourism is promoted, the number one stop in Boone County for travelers is ignored. We discussed making the Belvidere Oasis a transportation hub in our last issue.
