With the winner facing either Smyczek or Young, an American is guaranteed to reach the semi-finals at Delray Beach for the 17th straight year. The last time the semi-finals did not include an American was in 1999 (Malisse vs Draper, Hewitt vs Grosjean).

Wild card Juan Martin del Potro claimed his first victory since January 2015 in the first round, beating in his first match since two surgeries to his left wrist last season.
