DEFENDING CHAMPION ZVEREV MEETS RISING DE MINAUR IN D.C. FINAL

• No. 1 seed and defending champion of will attempt to claim a second straight Citi Open title when he meets Australian for the trophy in Washington. 21- year-old Zverev and 19-year-old de Minaur combine for the youngest final on the ATP World Tour since 20-year-old beat 19-year-old at Indian Wells in 2007. In their only prior meeting, Zverev won a fifth-set tiebreak to beat de Minaur at a tie in February.

• Zverev extends his rich vein of form at Washington, having compiled a 15-2 record in the American capital by reaching the quarter-finals or better in all four of his consecutive appearances dating back to 2015. Zverev dropped only one set en route to the final, against , who he beat at the Citi Open for the second straight year. The German is bidding to become the first repeat champion at Washington since Juan Martin del Potro went back-to-back in 2008 and 2009.

• De Minaur started the year ranked No. 208 but quickly established himself on the ATP World Tour, reaching the Brisbane semi-finals and Sydney final in back-to-back weeks. This made de Minaur the youngest player to reach semi-finals in consecutive weeks since Nadal did so at 2005 Monte- Carlo and Barcelona. He continued to prove his mettle this week, fending off four straight match points in a second-set tiebreak against in the semi-finals. If de Minaur wins the title, he will be the youngest champion on tour since Zverev himself triumphed at 2016 St. Petersburg.

• In the doubles final, goes for his fifth Washington title, but it would be his first without his twin brother Bob, who is dealing with a hip injury. 40-year-old M. Bryan is back at World No. 1 after winning Wimbledon with , and now takes aim at the Citi Open 2018 title alongside Edouard Roger-Vasselin, in their first event together. They will face No. 4 seeds and , who seek their second title of the season following their triumph at Acapulco.

YOUTH IS SERVED AS NEXT GEN ATP STARS DOMINATE IN D.C.

• Four of the five players contesting matches at the Citi Open 2018 on Saturday are #NextGenATP players, as the latter stages of this year’s Washington event are being dominated by the 21-and- under set. Defending Citi Open champion and No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev is also No. 1 in the ATP Race to Milan, which determines the qualifiers for the Next Gen ATP Finals. Fellow Citi Open 2018 title contenders (Race to Milan No. 2), Alex de Minaur (No. 5), and Andrey Rublev (No. 8) are also highly placed on that list.

• Zverev and Tsitsipas, who face off in the semi-finals, have gained the most ranking points amongst the #NextGenATP cohort so far this year. Zverev is used to this position, as he led the Race to Milan last year as well, but qualified for and participated in the Nitto ATP Finals for the overall Top 8 ATP World Tour players instead. Tsitsipas, on the other hand, just missed qualifying for the Next Gen ATP Finals last year, and served as one of the two alternates in Milan. Tsitsipas is already the first Greek to reach the Top 100 in the history of the ATP Rankings, and is the first Greek to make the round of 16 at a Grand Slam in the Open Era, which he just accomplished at Wimbledon.

of Arlington, Va., is the only player left who can prevent an all-#NextGenATP semi- final line-up; his quarter-final match against No. 16 seed Rublev did not begin on Friday, due to rain. Kudla has exceeded expectations this week: he entered the Citi Open 2018 having gone 0-4 in his previous Washington main draw matches – and had also gone 0-2 in the qualifying, and 0-2 in doubles to boot. This year, Kudla got three straight wins to reach the singles quarter-finals. Kudla is also in the doubles with fellow Washington, D.C. metropolitan area resident .

• Rublev was the No. 1 seed at last year’s inaugural Next Gen ATP Finals, and reached the title match, which he lost to Hyeon Chung. Despite missing three months of this season due to a stress fracture in his lower back, Rublev is still in the hunt to return to Milan, and is also aiming to add another ATP World Tour singles title to his maiden championship, which he won last year at Umag as a . Waiting in the semi-finals for either Rublev or Kudla is de Minaur, who made the final four when his quarter-final opponent withdrew due to fatigue after his late-night victory over . De Minaur is now into his first Tour-level semi-final since January, when he broke through by reaching the Brisbane semi-finals and Sydney final in back-to-back weeks.

FORMER CHAMPS ZVEREV AND NISHIKORI CLASH IN QUARTER-FINALS

• The two remaining former Citi Open champions in the field, No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev and No. 7 seed Kei Nishikori, will face off in a blockbuster quarter-final on Friday, which is a rematch of one of last year’s semi-finals. Defending champion Zverev, who has compiled a 13-2 win-loss record over his four Citi Open appearances, comes off a victory over his older brother Mischa in their first Tour-level meeting. 2015 titlist Nishikori, who is 14-5 in his seven Washington showings, avenged his loss to Zverev here last year with a semi-final victory at the ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo in April. 21-year-old Zverev is one of four #NextGenATP players who have made the 2018 Citi Open quarter-finals. None play each other, so an all-#NextGenATP semi-final line-up is a possibility.

• 2006 finalist Andy Murray is also still in the event, but just by the skin of his teeth, as he outlasted Marius Copil via a final-set tiebreak after three hours of play, winning just after 3:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Murray will rest up for the final match of the day against one of the other #NextGenATP players, 19-year-old Australian Alex de Minaur, who has reached his first Tour-level quarter-final since January, when he made the Brisbane semi-finals and Sydney final in back-to-back weeks.

• Denis Kudla of D.C. suburb Arlington, Va., entered this week 0-4 in main draw matches at the Citi Open – and had also gone 0-2 in the qualifying, and 0-2 in doubles to boot. Kudla upended that history this week, winning three straight singles matches to reach the quarterfinals. He also meets a #NextGenATP player, 20-year-old No. 16 seed Andrey Rublev of . Rublev completed both of his first two D.C. match wins on Thursday, over U.S. wild cards and .

• 19-year-old Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 10 seed, takes on No. 3 seed in the opening match on Stadium. #NextGenATP player Tsitsipas has been setting new milestones for his country in his young career, becoming the first Greek to reach the Top 100 in the history of the ATP Rankings, and the first Greek to make the round of 16 at a Grand Slam in the Open Era, which he just accomplished at Wimbledon. Goffin and Tsitsipas have split their two previous meetings; Belgium’s Goffin seeks his first final since the Nitto ATP Finals in London at the end of 2017.

ZVEREV BROTHERS CLASH FOR FIRST TIME ON ATP WORLD TOUR IN D.C.

• For the second day in a row, all remaining players are scheduled to hit the court at the Citi Open. Heading the list of match-ups is the third-round battle between No.1-seeded defending champion Alexander Zverev and his older brother, No. 15 seed Mischa. It is the first meeting between the Zverevs at ATP World Tour level, during a year which has seen them each pick up singles titles (Alexander at Madrid and Munich, and Mischa at Eastbourne). The last time brothers met at Tour level was at Kitzbuhel in 2016 ( def. Jurgen Melzer, 36 63 61 in the quarter-finals).

• Former World No. 1 Andy Murray will also contest his third-round match when he faces Marius Copil. In the second round, Murray exacted revenge on No. 4 seed , after the current British No. 1 had bounced Murray out of Eastbourne earlier this summer. 2006 Washington finalist Murray has now picked up two consecutive wins for the first time since last year’s Wimbledon, as the 45-time titlist on the ATP World Tour continues to work his way back from hip injury woes.

• No. 2 seed did not even take the court last night, as rain pushed his second-round encounter with compatriot Noah Rubin to Thursday. The winner of that match will face a quick turnaround, as he will return to the Stadium later in the day for a third-round tilt against either No. 16 seed Andrey Rublev or Tommy Paul, who are also embroiled in an interrupted second-rounder.

• Two local heroes hope to extend their newly attained good fortune in the third round. No. 13 seed Frances Tiafoe from Hyattsville, Md., clinched his maiden Citi Open win against , after losing in his first two attempts. Tiafoe will go for another win against No. 3 seed David Goffin; the Belgian has won both of his prior meetings with Tiafoe. And Denis Kudla from Arlington, Va., had lost his first four matches at Washington before claiming two wins this week, including an upset of No. 12 seed . Kudla aims for the hat trick against No. 6 seed .

ENTIRE FIELD IN ACTION ON WILD WEDNESDAY AT CITI OPEN

• All second-round matches take place on Wednesday at the Citi Open, as all 16 seeds face their first opponents. Defending champion and top seed Alexander Zverev began his second-round against on Tuesday, but it was interrupted by rain with Zverev, the World No. 3, up by a set. Zverev aims for a sixth straight match victory at Washington, as he chases his third title of the year.

• A battle of the Brits will take place on Wednesday as former World No. 1 Andy Murray meets his countryman, No. 4 seed and current British No. 1 Kyle Edmund. A persistent hip injury has pushed Murray down to No. 832 in the rankings, ceding his spot as the top-ranked Briton to Edmund while he makes his way back. Edmund has put together a stellar year to earn that position, making the semi-finals at the Australian Open as well as his first ATP World Tour singles final at Marrakech.

• Other Top 5 seeds in action are No. 3 David Goffin, who goes for his second win in two meetings with Pierre-Hugues Herbert, and No. 5 , who will attempt to claim his maiden match win at Washington against his compatriot James Duckworth. Two local heroes also contest their second-rounds on Wednesday: No. 13 seed Frances Tiafoe from Hyattsville, Md., looks for his first Citi Open win against Hubert Hurkacz, and Denis Kudla from Arlington, Va., meets No. 12 seed Karen Khachanov. DEFENDING CHAMPION ZVEREV STARTS 2018 D.C. CAMPAIGN

• Defending champion and top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany kicks off the second round of the Citi Open on Tuesday night with a match against Malek Jaziri of . World No. 3 Zverev aims to clinch a sixth straight match victory at Washington, as he chases his third title of the season. But Jaziri has challenged Zverev throughout their head-to-head: the Tunisian won their first encounter at Barcelona two years ago, and though Zverev rebounded by winning the following two meetings later that year, Jaziri pushed the German to three sets both times, including at the 2016 Citi Open.

• The remainder of Tuesday’s matches are first-round encounters. Among those tilts is the postponed meeting between three-time Grand Slam champion and American Donald Young. Young has posted some of his best career results at Washington, reaching the semi-finals twice before falling to the eventual champion both times. Wawrinka and Young first took to the court at around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, but precipitation returned just before play was to commence.

• Arlington, Virginia’s Denis Kudla and Slovakian Lukas Lacko also had their first-round match stymied by the intermittent rain on Monday, completing only one game before the rest of their Stadium Court tussle was moved to Tuesday. In other first-round battles, two former finalists hope to get their openers completed on Tuesday: 2010 finalist Marcos Baghdatis will try to break a 2-2 head-to-head deadlock with Benoit Paire, and 2014 finalist will face Alex de Minaur for the first time. 19-year-old De Minaur is No. 5 in the Race to the #NextGenATP Finals.
