Program Part III - Statement (a) US Open The USTA organizes and conducts the United States Open Tennis Championships as well Accomplishments of Program as other tournament events across the country The US Open is one of the world's premier sporting Service attractions and is the largest tennis event in the w orld The Open has a history of having the toughest Accomplishments draw of any tournament This can be attribued to the depth of talent in the field From a player's view point it is an achievement just to be accepted into the tournament This event must use the dedication and talents of many USTA volunteers, USTA staff and seasonal help in order to have it run efficiently and effectively The Open helps to fulfill one of the USTA's mayor purposes, that is to conduct tennis tournaments and competitions open to athletes w ithout regards to race, creed, color or national origin and under the best conditions possible so as to effectively promote the game of tennis to the general public The US Open is held each year at the National Tennis Center ("Tennis Center") in Flushing, New York The Tennis Center is owned and operated by the USTA National Tennis Center Incorporated, ("NTC"), a Code Section 501(c)(3) organization whose sole member is the USTA The NTC operates the facility on land leased fromthe City of New York The media exposure of the US Open has increased dramatically in recent years It is hoped that the enthusiasm generated by the US Open will serve to further encourage interest in tennis Further, it is hoped that this interest w ill lead to participation in tennis, the game for a lifetime, as a means of healthful recreation and physical fitness Included as expenses for the tournament's events are all costs associated with the tournament's administration, its promotion and ticket sales, player's expenses (including prize money) and stadium expenses (b) Professional Tennis Division The USTA Professional Tennis Division is composed of the Professional Competition, Davis Cup/Fed Cup/Olympics and Officials departments Together they manage the game at the highest levels in the United States, with an eye tow ards providing a manageable pathway to the elite levels of tennis competition for aspiring pro tennis players and officials In the number of events, the USTA has more invested in professional tennis in the United States than any other organization In addition to the US Open, the largest and most prestigious tournament in the world, the USTA staged more than 100 professional events in 2005 Challenger and satellite events are entry-level professional tournaments that comprise the circuit " The USTA also owns the US Men's Clay Court Championships and US Women's Hardcourt Championships on the ATP and WTA tours, respectively Davis Cup and Fed Cup are the elite national team competitions in professional tennis for men and w omen respectively Over one hundred and fifty nations compete in these events annually The Davis Cup celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1999 The US has won this competition on 37 occasions, more than any other nation As the recognized National Governing Body of the sport of tennis, the USTA is a member of the US Olympic Committee The USTA coordinates the United States' tennis participation in the Olympic games and the Paralympic Games as well as the Pan- American Games The US Open Series is the eight-week summer tennis season linking 10 mayor ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournaments to the US Open The US Open Series launched in 2004, and resulted in record attendance and TV viewership In total, the US Open Series events - - including the US Open - - Generated a record 1 6 million attendees, 128 million TV viewers and over 28 million w ebsite visits in 2005, all of which is growing the game of tennis The activities that are managed by the Professional Tennis Division represent tennis competition for amateurs and all athletes at its ultimate level The events staged by the division are leveraged to show case the fun, excitement, and athletic excellence of the sport and encourages participation at all levels (c) Community Tennis Development Community Tennis is the game at the grass roots and recreation level The USTA puts more resources into tennis at this level than any other organization in the world Everything from beginner lessons and special populations programs to competitive tournaments and leagues is within the realm of Community Tennis Community Tennis programs are divided into youth tennis and adult tennis departments In 1998, the USTA implemented USA Tennis Plan for Growth, an initiative to find new players and to create and expand Community Tennis Associations The simplicity of the USA Tennis Plan for Growth program and its success at bringing thousands of adults and juniors into the sport puts it in the center of community tennis development in the United States The USA Tennis Plan for Growth defined a pathway for players to try, learn, play and compete in the game of tennis Free lessons were given to new tennis players who had the opportunity to be a part of the USA Tennis 1-2-3 program and then continue to play in the USA Team Tennis program Collectively, these programs have brought over 1,000,000 new players to tennis in the first six years of the plan The USTA Wheelchair Tennis, with 1,500 participants has provided lessons, clinics, camps, team play and worldwide competition for players of all ages In 2000, the USTA hosted the World Team Cup for 32 nations at the Tennis Center In each subsequent year, the USTA has attended the event at the hosting nation (d) Marketing/Membership and Communications Promoting tennis, while an organizational objective of the USTA, is the mandate of the Marketing Division Sales and Marketing, Membership, Publishing and Communications are departments within this division The Sales and Marketing department is responsible for focusing on sponsors, television broadcasts and licensing The Membership department is responsible for increasing the USTA's individual and organizational membership They also provide customer service to the members and are consistently improving this service By the end of 2005, membership in USTA totaled 676,270 individuals and 7,260 organizations The Publishing department provides the USTA members with Tennis USTA, a magazine offering news about the USTA The Publishing department also manages the production of the USTA Tennis Yearbook, TOPSPIN and Tennis Championships Magazine The Communications department is responsible for the dissemination of USTA news and information to the public, through the media and the internet The Marketing department, through each of its groups, is charged with fueling the nationwide effort to promote and develop tennis, which is the USTA's primary objective (e) USA Tennis Player Development This is a player centered supplemental program that focuses on the development and success of American players in professional tennis USTA has funded this program by hiring national coaches who w ill have contact with 10 - 15 top players in all age groups as w ell as an in depth know ledge of another 20 - 30 players These coaches w ill provide information, advice and attend tournaments with these players The coaches are required to be certified and continue their coaching education in order to provide the necessary support to the players they work with Financial support to the players is an integral focus of this program In 2005 grants w ere distributed to 275 players ranging from $250 -
