Because of their prominence, monuments and publi c art can offer teachers and students many opportunit ies for interdiscip li nary study that directly relates to the history of their location Through an exploration of the ideas of co llective memory and counter memory, t his articl e explores the spec ific example of Monument Avenue in Richmond, Virginia, Further; the aut hors investigate differences in t he ways monu ments may be understood at the time they were erected versus how they are understood in the present.
