Welcome to the HeartSmart Walks programme for

February 2016 to May 2016

These walks are led by volunteer Walk Leaders and are designed to cater for all ages and abilities. The walks offer opportunities to exercise and meet new people in a safe and friendly environment. Below is some information to help you get the most out of them:  All walks finish at their starting point unless otherwise stated.

 No booking is required but please arrive 10 minutes before the walk is due to start.

 Please inform the Walk Leader if you will be leaving the walk early and sign yourself out.

 Please wear suitable footwear and you may like to bring a drink of water.

 Please note that the walks are smoke free.

 Dogs are welcome unless otherwise stated but must be kept on the lead.

 Timings stated on the programme are approximate

 If the weather is poor the walk may be cancelled. Please check with the office or website if unsure (office hours Mon-Fri 8.45am-5pm).

Fri 5th February – 10:30am - L: Jane M: Peter D Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles. This walk includes Iping and Stedham Common and returns close to the River Rother. It includes crossing the A272 and a little lane walking. Some slight uphill and includes stiles. Meet: Iping Common car park SU852220. By Car: A286 to , at mini roundabout in the town, turn left onto A272 towards . After 2 miles turn left into Road (signposted Elsted/) and the car park is on the right hand side. By Bus: 92 from Midhurst Bus Station to Elsted Road. Mon 8th February – 10:30am -PRINSTED L: Anne M: Richard Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles. Easy flat walk.. Meet: Meet in Emsworth town square. By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre; the town square is on the right hand side. Car park through town on the right. Please allow sufficient time in the car park Tues 9th February – 10:30am BURPHAM L: Andrew M: Ann Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles. Up Peppering Lane to the top of the Downs Meet: cricket ground car park behind the ‘George at Burpham’ inn (SU038088) By car: A27 to Arundel; turn left by station, three mile cul de sac to Burpham Wed 10th February – 10.45am CLIMPING L: Dominic M: Peter D Time: 1 hour 15 minutes Distance: Approx. 2.5 miles. Along dunes and beach to Climping Mill, then across fields to Ferry Road and Rope Walk to club. Refreshments are available at the Yacht Club on the return. Meet: 10.45am (to allow for train) at Arun Yacht Club Car Park, Rope Walk, Littlehampton, West , BN17 5DL. Your support to the club in buying refreshments is appreciated in return for free parking. By Car: Take the A259, Bognor Littlehampton Road. About ¼ mile east of Ford Road roundabout turn south into Ferry Road. Follow signs for beach and Golf Course onto Rope Walk. The Yacht Club is on west bank of the river opposite the Golf Club at the top of the slope. By Bus/Train: Across the footbridge opposite Littlehampton station. Turn left, the Yacht Club is about 1/3 of a mile ahead. Fri 12th February – 10.30am CHICHESTER CANAL L: Janet M: Richard Time: 1 hour 30minutes Distance: 3.5 mile level. Return by bus. Bring bus pass or money for fare. Can be muddy in places when wet. Meet: Chichester Canal, Basin Road, Chichester PO19 8DT. By Car: From Chichester city centre go south along Basin Road to Canal Wharf. Limited parking but plenty of public car parks available in the city centre.

Come and see the fallow deer, The Monument & a surprise Dog’s Face in Petworth Park. Meet: The Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Road, Tillington, GU28 9AF. SU963 220. By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272 then in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking in road. Outstanding wetland and heath plus and an extra loop to Shopham Bridge. The Mill is a further 1.5 miles. Thurs 18th February – 10:30am WOODS AND STANE STREET L: Peter Br M: Time: 2 hours. Distance: 4 mile walk up into Eartham Woods and back down Stane Street. Ups and downs with one short steep climb. Meet: Free Forestry Commission car park on the right, ¾ of a mile north of The George PH at Eartham. Map ref SU938106 By Car: Take A27 Chichester bypass towards Arundel. Half a mile before Fontwell turn left following signs to Eartham, after Z bend pass The George PH and continue north to Forestry Commission car park. Alternatively take the A285 Petworth road from Chichester take the 2nd right hand turn to Eartham and the cark park is on the left of the road. Mon 22nd February – 10.30am EMSWORTH TO POOK LANE L: Anne M: Janet Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles level walk along the shore. Meet: Emsworth Square By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre, the town square is on the right hand side. Note: You need to pay for parking. By Bus: 700 bus to Emsworth square. Tues 23rd February – 10.30am DROVER’S ESTATE WEST WALK L: Fiona M: Bruce Time: 1.5 hours Distance: 3 miles. A pleasant, gently undulating walk around part of Drover’s estate taking in woods, farmland and rolling hills. Meet: at Singleton cricket pavilion off the A286 between the Partridge Inn pub and Weald and Downland museum on the opposite side of the road By Car: Park in Singleton village. Flat walk via Aviation Museum to Tangmere, 12c church with WWII memories. Then around the old airfield. Meet: In Oving park roadside on Church Lane, and meet outside the church. Map ref SU887218 By Car: Church Lane is off the main road through Oving (south of the A27 and to the east of Chichester) after the road to The Gribble PH when travelling from Chichester. Thurs 25th February – 10.30am *SHORT WALK* BOGNOR TO FELPHAM L: Jane M: Janet Time: 30 minutes Distance: This can be a 30 minute 1 mile walk or a longer 2.5 mile walk. Walk starts at pier and goes along to seafront to Felpham where there is an optional coffee stop. We return the same way. Meet: Bognor Regis pier on the seafront. By Car: From Chichester take the A259 into Bognor Regis and follow signs for the sea front. Car parking is widely available but you will need to bring money for parking. By Bus: The 700 bus runs between Bognor and Chichester. Fri 26th February – 10:30am CHARLTON L: Andrew M: Ann Time: 2 hours 30 minutes Distance: 5 miles. Climb up Charlton Forest to Down Meet: The ‘Fox Goes Free’ inn car park, just east of the inn (SU889131) By Car: A286 to Singleton; right to Charlton, proceed to end of the village Sun 28th February – 10.30am ARUN RIVERBANK - BLACK RABBIT L: Dominic M: Richard Time: 2 hours Distance: 5 or 3 miles, easy, flat riverside walk, no stiles. Meet: Mill Road car park by the river in town centre (charge). By Car: A27 to Arundel town centre. At bottom of hill turn left before river, car park on right Mon 29th February – 10:30am ROWLANDS CASTLE L: Anne M: Peter D Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 4 Miles. Hilly, some stiles. Not suitable for beginners. Meet: Recreation Ground off Links Lane By Car: Take the A27 west from Chichester towards Havant and take the exit towards Langstone. At the roundabout take the third exit onto Park Road S/B2149, go through two roundabouts. At the next roundabout take the second exit onto Redhill Road. Turn left towards Links Lane and turn left at Links Lane. Turn right to Recreation Ground opposite Village Hall. PO9 6AQ. Map ref TQ061065 By Car: A27 through Arundel and Dover Street is signed on the left after 2 miles (before The Woodman Arms where the A27 goes uphill). Mon 7th March – 10:30am TILLINGTON via PITSHILL L: Gerald M: Time: 1 hour 30 minutes. Distance: 3 miles. A lovely & interesting walk in and around Tillington, via vineyards & then to Pitshill, Tillington's mansion. Meet: The Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Road, Tillington, GU28 9AF. SU963 220. By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272 then in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking in road. Tues 8th March – 10:30am CHICHESTER CENTURION WAY L: Andrew M: Ann Time: 2 hours Distance: Four miles via the , Centurion Way and Summersdale; flat Meet: Brandy Hole Lane, right off the Old Broyle Road By car: Right turn off the B2178, or left into Brandy Hole Lane from A286 Thurs 10th March – 10:30am SLINDON WOODS/DUKES ROAD L: Dominic M: Time: 1 hour 15 minutes Distance: 2¼ miles. Generally flat, gravel path. Some muddy areas and short inclines. Meet: National Trust Car Park, Dukes Road, Slindon. By Car: East along A27 to Fontwell racecourse roundabout – about 400m from roundabout on the left is Dukes Road. Park in the National Park car park at the bottom of the dip on the right. Fri 11th March – 10:30am WATERGATE L: Jane W M: Peter D Time: 2 hours Distance: Approx. 4 mile walk through woods and fields. There are 2 steepish climbs and the walk does include stiles. Meet: At the junction of the B2146 and the Stoughton Road – where parking is available on the grass verge by the River Ems. By Car: Take the B2178 from Chichester, turning right at into Hares Lane and right again on to the B2146

Park in public car park (pay & display) by information board. Note: Please ensure you put enough money in the car park, you may need more than 2 hours parking. By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre, the town square is on the right hand side. Tues 15th March – 10.30am *NEW* CHILGROVE L:Andrew M: Ann Time: 1 hour 30minutes Distance: 3 miles up into Philliswood and back along sunken lanes; stiles; no dogs Meet: ‘White Horse’ inn, Chilgrove car park (SU828146) By car: A286 north to Lavant, then three miles west along B2141 Wed 16th March – 10.30am MIDHURST QE1 OAK L: Peter Br M: Peter D Time: 2 hours. Distance: 4 mile walk past Cowdray ruins and Polo grounds to the 1000 year old Queen Elizabeth I Oak (one of 50 Great British trees). Not suitable for beginners. Meet: Main car park just north of the centre of Midhurst, behind the bus station (small charge of 40p for 3 hours).Map ref SU887218 By Car: Take the A286 to Midhurst, through town centre to mini roundabout at bus station. Turn right into car park. By Bus: To Midhurst bus station

Thurs 17th March – 10.30am L: Fiona M: Bruce Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 mile lovely wooded heathy walk near . Quite flat but can be muddy. Meet: at Lavington Common car park. By car: Take the Graffham turning off the A285 between Duncton and Petworth. Continue for approx. 1 mile following the bends and the car park is on the right amongst the pine trees. Up through East Hanger to Bevis’s Thumb; long views Meet: Recreation ground car park, just south of the village (SU776147) Directions: B2178 Funtington, right at Hares Lane, B2146 right to Compton Wed 23rd March – 10:30am FORD L: Peter Br M: Peter D Time: 2 hours 30minutes Distance: 4.5 mile walk through Ford airfield and alongside the River Arun. Meet: Car park outside Climping Church. Map ref TQ002025 By Car: A27 to Arundel, then take last exit off first roundabout (Ford road). Over level crossing and car park is immediately after the prison.

Thurs 24th March – 10.00am CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL TO L: Jane M: Richard Time: 2 hours Distance: A flat 4 mile walk starts at the Cathedral, it takes an urban route quickly out of the city to reach meadows, fields and shoreline, to reach the village of Bosham. It can be muddy and uneven underfoot and does have stiles. We will be returning by bus - the first bus back will be at 12:30pm and after that approximately hourly. Please bring bus pass or money for the fare. There are coffee shops in Bosham if people wish to stay on. By car: Car parks are available in Chichester but you will need to bring money for parking and either a bus pass or money for the bus back to Chichester. By bus: Chichester is served by good bus routes. Fri 25th March – 10:30am KINGLEY VALE L: Peter Bu M: Janet Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance:3 miles, past the yew trees. Meet: West Stoke car park. By Car: A286 to Mid Lavant, turn left on to Down Road for 2 miles (NOT Church park). No bus but call Peter on 07779 748417 from Emsworth. Sun 27th March – 10.30am AROUND THORNEY ISLAND L: Dominic M: Time: Approx 4 hours Distance: 8 miles. Not suitable for beginners. Be aware this is a double length walk without the chance to short-cut. Flat terrain. Might be muddy in places. Bring drinks and snacks for a stop half way. Meet: Thornham Marina car park. By Car: A259 from Chichester. Thorney Road is just left before Emsworth then turn left onto Thornham Lane, Thornham Marina will be on your left. By Bus: 700 from Chichester - stop is just before Thorney Road. Thornham Lane is 0.5 miles down Thorney Road. Mon 28th March – 10.30am HAYLING L: Peter Bu M: Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3 miles. Oyster beds and fields. Meet: Meet between two bungalows. PO11 0LU By Car: ½ mile after Hayling Bridge, right at the Esso Garage before the pelican lights, opposite Victoria Road.

Tues 29th March – 10.30am SLINDON ESTATE L: Simon M: Time: 2 hour Distance: 4 mile walk passing through farmland, woodland as well as visiting Slindon Folly. Good paths and no stiles. Wonderful views Meet: at the road entrance to Slindon College and the National Trust Slindon Estate. Car parking on Slindon Top Road which is the road between Slindon College and the Catholic Church

Wed 30th March – 10:30am COCKING HILL TOP TO WEST DEAN L: Bruce M: Peter D Time: 2 hours 40 mins. Distance: 5.75 miles. Ascent 250m. Moderately strenuous linear walk with 5 stiles, visiting the 13 Chalk Stone sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy. BRING YOUR BUS PASS OR MONEY. Car drivers could park at West Dean and take the 60 bus to the start point. By Bus: No 60 between Bognor Regis, Chichester, Midhurst and Haslemere (every 30 min). Mon 4th April – 10.30am HAYLING BILLY L: Anne M: Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles along the track to the Theatre and back. Ideal for beginners. Meet: Meet behind the Esso garage. By Car: ½ mile after Hayling Bridge, Esso Garage is before the pelican lights, opposite Victoria Road. Tues 5th April – 10:30am MARINA TO DELL QUAY L: Janet M: Time: 1 hour and 30 mins. Distance: 3 miles. Meet: Car park opposite the 'Boathouse Cafe' near the Chichester Yacht Club. By car: A286 south from Chichester towards . Turn right at sign to Chichester Marina and drive all the way down towards the Yacht Club turning right before the Club car park and parking in the car park opposite the Boathouse Cafe. Wed 6th April – 10:30am GOODWOOD PARK L: Peter Br M: Peter D Time: 2 hours Distance: Approx 4 miles walk through the woods around Goodwood and with a long up slope on the return journey. Meet: Free car park on the right after passing Goodwood racecourse (not the parks opposite the course), map ref SU897113. By Car: Up Kennel Hill towards the racecourse, passing the golf club. Turn right alongside the racecourse until a right hand bend after the end of the racecourse. Car park is on the right soon after the bend Thurs 7th April– 10.30am NUTBOURNE TO PRINSTED L: Jane M: Peter D Time: 2 hours Distance: Flat 4 mile walk through woodland to the harbour shoreline and back through farmland and fields. It can be muddy and uneven underfoot and does have stiles and there is a small wall to climb over. Meet: At the entrance to Maybush Copse, which is about 200yds down Cot Lane on the right hand side. Parking is very limited - there is a small parking area at the top of Cot Lane and on the verge by Maybush Copse. By Car: Take the A259 Fishbourne Road from Chichester. Continue over one roundabout, pass the Bosham Inn on the right and Cot Lane is a turning on the left. By Bus: The 700 bus stops at the top of Cot Lane so this is a good walk to access by bus. NET WAL Tues 12th April– 10:30am *BEGINNERS* PETWORTH HOUSE PLEASURE GARDEN L: Gerald M: Time: 1 hour 30minutes. Distance Approx. 3 miles. Magnificent 40 acre "Spring" Garden. See the azaleas, camellias & daffodils in Petworth House's Pleasure Garden. Meet: The Horse Guards Inn, Upperton Road, Tillington GU28 9AF at 10.30. By Car: 1 mile west from Petworth on A272 then in the middle of Tillington, turn north following brown tourist sign to The Horse Guards. Parking in road. Suitable for Beginners. NO Dogs this time. Moderately strenuous with one steep climb to Pen Hill for glorious views. Also visits the lost churches of . Three stiles; might be muddy. Or take Tipper Lane from Thurs 14th April– 10.30am AMBERLEY VILLAGE L: Peter Br M:Ann Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 mile circular walk through Amberley village and back round the castle and along the river Arun. Meet: Car park at Amberley Station. MAP REF TQ026117 By Car: A27 to Fontwell, A29 to Whiteways Lodge roundabout then B2139 to Amberley. Fri 15th April– 10:30am SOUTH HARTING L:Jane M:Peter D Time: 2 hours 30minutes Distance: 5 miles. This is a hilly walk not suitable for beginners. There are no stiles but can be muddy and uneven at places. Meet: Small car park on your left as you enter the village on the B2146 from Chichester. By car: B2146 from Chichester. Alternative street parking is also available.

Mon 18th April– 10:30am EMSWORTH L: Anne M: Janet Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 2.5 miles. Leisurely stroll. Flat. Meet: Meet in Emsworth town square. By Car: Take the A259 from Chichester to Emsworth. At the roundabout turn left into the town centre, the town square is on the right hand side. Car park through town on the right. Tues 19th April– 10:30am HARTING L: Andrew M: Peter D Time: 2 hours Distance: Four miles along the South Downs Way and through Down Meet: Harting Down National Trust Car park (SU790181) By car: A286 to Lavant, then B2141 to Harting Hill National Trust car park Weds 20th April– 10:30am DROVERS ESTATE EAST WALK L: Fiona M: Time: 1 hour 30minutes Distance: 3 miles A rambling walk through woods and fields finishing at . We can look for the first cowslips and other spring flowers. Some moderately steep bits, mostly flat or gently undulating. Meet: at the bus stop outside Singleton primary school. By car: Parking available outside the school in the layby. Any problems phone Fiona 07767400039 Thurs 21st April – 10:30am SLINDON BLUEBELLS L: Janet H M: Time: 1 hour 30 minutes. Distance: 3.5 miles. A walk through woods and up onto the downs. Walking back through the village and a section of bluebell woods. Meet: National Trust car park, Park Lane, Slindon. By Car: Take A27 Eastward from Chichester. At Fontwell roundabout continue on A27 until you reach the next roundabout (¼ mile approx). At this roundabout take first left (A29 Pulborough/Amberley) and immediately turn left into Park Lane. Car park is ¾ mile on the left.

Fri 22nd April– 10.30am HIGHDOWN HILL L: Jane M: Peter D Time: Distance: 2.5miles A hilltop walk with gentle slopes and good views. 2 stiles. There is also a free chalk garden to visit and a café Meet: Car park By Car: Take the A259 Littlehampton Road to Worthing, After the A280 roundabout, continue straight and look out for Highdown Vineyard. Do not take this turn but take the next turn on the left and drive up the hill where you will find a large car park where we will meet. Mon 25th April – 10.30am LAVANT L: Andrew M: Time: 2 hours Distance: Four miles, up Chalkpit Lane, over Hayes Down, and back along Marsh Lane Meet: Sheepwash Lane, Lavant Green (SU859084) By car: Right at Pook Lane to Village Green, or no. 60 Midhurst bus

Tues 26th April – 10.30am AROUND BIGNOR L: Simon M: Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Distance: 3.5 miles, walk around Bignor starting from Bignor Roman Villa. At the bottom of Pagham Road go round the bend by Church Farm into Church Lane, where you should find sufficient parking in the lane - either near the church or towards the end of the lane. (Don't use the church car park). By Bus: No 60 bus (every 15 mins) from Chichester stops on the corner of Pagham Road and sea. This is a longer walk with some gentle hills. There are five stiles. This is a circular walk from Walderton and goes via Stansted and West Marden. Tues 31st May – 10.30am COMPTON L: Jane M: Peter D Time: 1 hr 45 minutes Distance: 3.5 miles. Not suitable for beginners. This walk includes some gentle hills and has lovely views. It does include a short section of road walking. No Dogs. There is an option coffee stop at the end of the walk. Meet: At the recreation ground car park just as you enter the village of Compton. By car: Take the B2178 from Chichester, turning right at Funtington into Hares Lane and right again on to the B2146. Continue on the B2146 through West Marden and you will see the recreation ground on your right as you enter Compton village
