Lotto Northern League Premier Division– 1.00pm

1st August 2009 Manurewa AFC Club Rooms P.O. Box 75 122 War Memorial Park Manurewa Gibbs Rd Manurewa Phone: (09) 267 1120 www.manurewaafc.org.nz Presidents Report

I have not yet come down from the high I reached last Saturday. What a terrific result for the club.

I don’t know whether it was my story that I told to the team on Thursday night or not, but the boys rose to the occasion and turned on a mighty game.

They could have put Nelson away in the first twenty minutes with many attempts on goal, just missing, but then let nelson back into the game, conceded a goal, and then had to come from behind.

When T-bags slotted home that excellent third goal the euphoria was beyond comprehension.

All the team played well. In the change room after the game i said that they all deserved to be the player of the day and I was happy to see that Mark agreed and gave the award to them all.

The reserves played away against Central at Kiwitea Street, and as I didn’t see their game I cannot comment.

This week we play host to the teams from the Club and we extend a warm welcome to them and hope they enjoy our hospitality.

Alex Ogilvy Supporters Chatham Cup Semi Finals!

Just a note to let you know what is going on with our Chatham Cup trip to !

There is a supporter’s deal that you can get in on through Flight Centre in Manukau City. You will need to speak to Angelina Cunningham (Aaron Lawrence’s partner (Rowdie)) who will get you the deal that is going on. You can contact her on ph 263 6700 or email [email protected] or call into the shop. It is opposite the seafood market by Foodtown in the Westfield mall. Flight centre have generously given us $50 off each person’s flights when booking through Angelina.

It involves flights down to Wellington on the Saturday just after lunch time, and of course flights home at around 7pm on Sunday night. It also includes a bus to and from the airport and to and from the game, as well as accommodation at the Ibis. This is estimated to be at around $315 per person (but could be more depending on the deal with jet star on the day – it is not expected to fluxuate too much – the sooner you get in the better!)

The team is staying at different accommodation so we do not disturb their pre game work and be “ferocious and hostile” as the Nelson Mail states us to be. But flights will be the same.

If you wish to have flights arriving earlier on the Saturday or leave later on the Sunday this can also be arranged with Angelina and you will still receive the bus and accommodation package.

Hope to have as many people there as possible!

The ladies teams are at it again! Promised to be an awesome night! We are fundraising for the club (not the ladies) and would love to see you all there! Tickets selling fast! Posters placed around the club- rooms. See any of the ladies to purchase tickets or Crystal Hill/Tania Bevan for more details!

If you have any news or any photos you would like put into the programme please email to [email protected] with a name and brief description. Reserve Coaches Comments

Hello to Ross and his Onehunga sports side, also hello to our supporters.

Last week we had 2 games our first against Central at Kiwitea st. On a very nice pitch and nice weather we lost the game 2-5. We started the game a bit slower than we would of liked with central having most of the play in the first 10 mins, but when we settled down we started to get a grip of the game and we got the first goal coming from Jason with a nice through ball of Matt. After the goal I was disappointed that we conceded the equalizer so quickly. When half time came we were happy with the way we were playing there was just a couple of minor things that we needed to concen- trate on, I told the boys during half time that we would get more chances we just needed to be patience and disciplined at the back.

But as our season has gone this year we turned off at the start of 2nd half and we conceded 3 goals in the space of about 10mins and from then on we were chasing the game. Our commitment showed and we never gave up and got our 2nd goal from Arib. We carried on trying to get another couple of goals but couldn't find the back of the net, and as we were chasing the game some holes opened up and we conceded the 5th. I was pleased with 75 mins of the game and if we can put a 90min perform- ance I know we will get a win. Our player of the day was Clayton with a super per- formance in goal.

Our 2nd game was supposed to be against Otahuhu in the Counties Manukau cup, but they pulled out on Sat so we go into the quarter finals without playing a game in the cup.

I would like to thank Chris's mum (Linda) for doing the strip the last couple of weeks.

Lastly, this week is Yash's last game before he heads of to the Uk, we would like to wish him all the best on his travels. So thanks for you services this year you will be missed in the remainder of the season.

A warm welcome to Memorial Park to Onehunga Sports coaching staff, players and supporters. Sports’ come to us today after an important win over Metro to get them away from the bottom. Last week’s Chatham Cup quarter final had everything that is great about a cup tie. Goals, drama, cards, great crowd and fine weather! The team and management are thrilled at gaining a semi final spot and the realisation that we are a game away from the final is very exciting. The game itself started well for us with two chances in the first ten minutes created but not converted. The game settled down with both teams sharing possession and trying to gain advantage. Some marginal referee decisions were adding to the flavour and too many yellow cards given when a quiet word for the first offence would have been more appropriate. Nelson was causing problems with fifteen minutes of the first half remaining and some desperate defending kept them scoreless until halftime. The halftime talk was all about keeping to our game plan chances will come and the game will turn. After fifteen minutes the game did change but the wrong way with Nelson scoring with a volley from a left wing cross. The next fifteen minutes we tried hard to get the equaliser but were struggling to break down their resolute defence. Just when things were looking glum, Graham played a ball into Brad who turned his defender inside the penalty area and crossed to Stu, who chested down and volleyed goalward, only to be blocked by a defender with his arm. So up stepped Stu to take the penalty and after a barrage of abuse from the keeper calmly slotted home the equaliser (so I’m told). We then with huge crowd support pushed on for the winner and forced two corners straight away which were cleared and then on the break Nelson nearly stole the winner with Jono having to clear off the line and the ball rebounding off the striker into Ally’s arms. With ninety minutes up and myself thinking about drumming up some words of wisdom for extra-time Dave from left fullback pushed forward with the ball and let fly from thirty metres (he has possibly said longer) and we all watched as it bulleted into the top corner of the net. The bench and crowd erupted but we had to endure many minutes of added time. After five more minutes Theara added the icing on with a low drive just inside the near post to sew it up. So the semi final beckons for us and news just in puts us up away (how dare they) against Wellington Olympic. Not for the first time this year we have seen an absolute thriller go to the wire and the noise and roar from the grandstand was a huge boost for the team. Unfortunately not everyone sees the same game and reading the Nelson Mail Report it says that Manurewa ‘was a hostile environment.’ Very precious I think but maybe their five supporters are a little quieter. With the semi final still a month away we have four important league games to finish the season. As much as it is impossible to do we must put the semi to one side and focus on the opportunity to make the top four play offs. We have players coming back from injury so competition and back-up will be at its strongest for the run in. Look forward to seeing the stand full for our last game at home. Good luck to all Rewa teams this weekend. Enjoy the game. AFF Championship League

The boys continued on their winning way last week with a good 3-1 victory over Fenci- bles. Compared to the first round, it was a very different looking Fencibles side that lined up, possibly due to the fact their reserve team did not play. The first half ended 1-1 with both goal keepers feeling embarrassed. With early second half goals to Damien and Ashley the win was sealed. A good effort by the whole team as it was their first game in three weeks and was against a very fired up competitor. Player of the day was Adam Bull.

On Sunday we had a Counties Cup game against Papakura and won 3-0. This week's game at Three Kings will be huge, a win here will just about wrap things up. However, a loss and Three Kings are right back in it.

With the great win by our top side last week, I have decided to let them keep the crate they owe. However, to all those other teams, I will get Duncan or Yvonne to inform Baycorp of the debt. This seems to be in line with club policy. Graeme Wickman

Last week’s game against Mt Albert Ponsonby proved to be a hiccup in our otherwise improving performance over the course of the season. After holding out for a goal-less first half the opposition turned up the heat and put 4 well constructed goals away in the second half.

Vada Miers was player of the day for her relentless chasing down of a couple of particularly skilful opposition players who would have otherwise had an easy time of it.

We still have 5 or 6 games left to redeem ourselves and I still hold out a chance at hitting the target of 8 wins this season to go with our 5 draws. It will come down to the determination of the players, something we have shown we have plenty of in previous games.

Also Shontelle Stevens has reached double figures for goals scored and has a chance to be top goal scorer for the club. A deserved accolade if it can be achieved and one the whole team can be proud of helping her attain.

The next 5 games are all away so at least we will get the chance to receive 5 after match feeds and judge for ourselves the quality of the opposition in the kitchen, and see if they match our high standards. Wayne Newsome Again last weeks results were a mixed bag with 3 wins, 1 draw, 6 losses and 3 post- ponements. Congratulations to the 13th grade who had an awesome 8-0 win over Tuakau. This team is sitting in second place on their table, an awesome achievement. Our 12th grade div 1 side are on top of their table with 4 wins from the 4 games played. They have scored 13 goals in these 4 games and had only 3 against. A fantastic job! The 12th grade div 3 side are in second place with 3 wins out of 4 games. Another great effort. Well done to all teams, reports from coaches show you are all improving and putting in tremendous amounts of effort.

Since this is our last programme edition I would like to put out a big thank you to all of the youth coaches and managers who have done an outstanding job this season. We hope you have enjoyed it, we have definitely appreciated having you on board. And to my youth committee a big thank you indeed for putting up with the workload. Especially Laurette Hummels, you are my angel! Always there doing exactly what is needed before I even ask and helping out in every way possible. This season has been made a lot easier and a lot more enjoyable because of you. Thanks!

My last thank you of course to the players and families for their commitment and hard work over the season. It has been awesome to get out there and watch all the kids this season, we have a lot of talent in this club and look forward to seeing what the future holds!

To finish off this week our biggest news yet! A big congratulations goes out to Brandon Patterson who is our only 12th grader to make it through to the AFF Under 12 Talent Development Programme this year. We put forward 6 players this season and they all did us very proud. We will definitely be looking to re enter them for the programme next year. For those of you who have not heard of the programme before it is what we used to call Reps. Brandon is just one of 93 players chosen from hundreds put forward and he has been through the tough trials and selection process. These squads begin training tomorrow for the Weir Rose Bowl tournament which brings together the best U12 talent from AFF, US1 and WBOP football federations. This tournament is held in Cambridge in October. Well done Brandon and we wish you all the best!

Good luck for all games this weekend! Tania Bevan Tomorrow’s footballers start with today’s 5th and 6th graders. I take my hat off to the coaches for their patients. While the skill level is still developing, the youth and incidence is great fun to watch. I urge you to get down and watch a game before the season finishes. It’s guaranteed enjoyment.

On the field some of the younger teams found it difficult during the grading rounds. Now that grading finished some 4-5 weeks ago we has seen confidence build as players are matched with teams of equal caliber. Both 7th and 8th grades are now front- ing up to games with skill to win them and still have fun. Although all grades are still getting results that are not in their favor, the juniors as a whole are still averaging a success rate that exceeds 50% wins.

The 10th Mustangs stepped up to Auckland premier this year after cleaning up Counties -Manukau competition last season. Auckland premier division is a stronger faster competition and the boys are holding their own. Currently they are in the middle of the table with picking up 4pts in the last two weeks. Hang in there guys.

Coach Lee Purdy of the 9th force is excited. He states that his team has had some terrific wins and has come together in the last 7-8 weeks. They are yet to lose a game since finishing the grading round the force are in contention to win their division sitting 1st equal.

Further teams that are creating havoc on the park are Ant’s 9th Gold and Marty’s 7th lightening. Both are un-stoppable and yet to lose a game. I would bet money on them that they win their division and bring trophies home.

The season is coming to and end and the juniors have two events left. Junior disco on the 8th August at the club and prize giving at the Weymouth Cosi club on the 20th September.

So, on behalf of the committee, I would like to congratulate all the players for their efforts and we wish them all the best for what’s left of the season.

At this point I would like to express my thanks to the coaches and mangers for their efforts this season so far. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the committee members; especially convey my appreciation to the junior committee for all their hard work and dedication this year.
