Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The Gay Games is a quadrennial sporting and cultural event designed for the gay and lesbian community. The brainchild of former Olympic decathlete Tom Waddell, the Games were first held in San Francisco in 1982. Some 1,300 athletes participated in the first competition. Since then, the event has become a lucrative attraction that cities bid for the privilege of hosting. The Games pump millions of dollars into the host city's local economy. Waddell had originally intended to call the competition the Gay Olympics, but nineteen days before the start of the first games the United States Olympic Committee obtained a restraining order, forbidding the use of that name. The USOC asserted that it had sole rights to use the name Olympics. Waddell, noting that the USOC had raised no objections to other competitions using the name, told Sports Illustrated: "The bottom line is that if I'm a rat, a crab, a copying machine or an Armenian I can have my own Olympics. If I'm gay, I can't.'' Waddell, who died from complications of AIDS in 1987, conceived the Games as a means of promoting the spirit of inclusion and healthy competition in athletics. As his biographer Dick Schaap explains, "Tom wanted to emphasize that gay men were men, not that they were gay, and that lesbian women were women, not that they were lesbians.

    Klaus Allofs: «Meine Bälle hätten hier oben eigentlich weiterfliegen müssen.» Am 13. GOFUS Suisse Cup war erstmals die deutsche Fussballlegende Klaus Allofs (61) dabei. Zusammen mit vielen weiteren Berühmtheiten (siehe Berichterstattung zum Turnier) golfte er für einen guten Zweck. Der deutsche Fussball-Europameister zeigte sich angetan vom Turnier wie auch von Davos und erfreut über die grosszügigen Spenden der anwesenden Teilnehmer. Klaus, du bist heuer das erste Mal in Davos dabei. Wie gefällt es dir, hattest du Zeit auch etwas von Davos zu sehen? Klaus Allofs: Das Panorama hier ist natürlich wunderbar. Gestern habe ich eine Proberunde gespielt und heute das Turnier, zwei Tage Traumwetter. Von Davos selber habe ich noch nicht so viel gesehen. Ich würde sehr gerne wiederkommen, vielleicht im Winter einmal. In meiner Heimat im Rheinland kenne ich vor allem Flachland. Umso mehr geniesse ich die Berge hier. Und wie lief deine heutige Golf-Runde? Aufgrund der Höhe und der dünnen Luft hier sollten die Bälle eigentlich weiterfliegen. Bei mir war das leider nicht der Fall (lacht). Im Ernst, es war eine tolle Runde. Ich mag solche Anlässe, weil man mit verschiedenen Menschen zusammenkommt und mit dem Flight rund 5 Stunden verbringt. Das ist eine intensive Zeit, bei der man neue Leute und neue Geschichten kennenlernt. Aber klar ist, wir sind auch Sportler und alle ehrgeizig. Apropos ehrgeizig; dein Handicap liegt bei 25,8 - jenes deines Bruders Thomas Allofs, der heute ebenfalls dabei war, bei 6,7. Für einmal schneidest du schlechter ab, warum? Er hat zum einen sicher viel mehr gespielt, gerade in den vergangenen Jahren, wo ich aufgrund meiner Managertätigkeiten bei Bremen und Wolfsburg kaum Zeit fand.

Het afgelopen jaar was er een van puzzelwerk. Puzzelstukjes vinden, was geen probleem. Punt was te kijken welk stukje het meest authentiek was. Vele stukjes blonken immers buitensporig fel. Jef “Poeske” Scherens was een overstijgende persoonlijkheid, die zowel op als naast de fiets wist te fascineren. Als sprintende baanwielrenner kende hij in de periode tussen de Twee Wereldoorlogen, het interbellum van de twintigste eeuw, veruit zijn gelijke niet. Scherens was als ‘fenomeen’ een ‘idool’, die supporters deed juichen, journalisten in de pen deed kruipen en lyrische reacties aan hen ontlokte. In een fervente poging op zoek te gaan naar een kern van waarheid en tijdsgevoel, was het vaak noodzakelijk mezelf te berispen, wanneer enthousiasme primeerde op kritische zin. Het leven van Jef Scherens rolt zich dan ook uit als een lofdicht, dat doorheen de jaren haast niet aan charme heeft ingeboet. Na een intensieve kennismaking met “Poeske”, wielerheld en volksfiguur, was ik anderzijds terdege verwonderd . De laatste decennia kenden wielerbelangstelling en ‘koersliteratuur’ een enorme hausse . Kronieken, biografieën en poëtische werken worden gekleurd door noeste renners en wervelende persoonlijkheden - al kan er sprake zijn van een chronologische en pragmatische richtlijn.

    El “padre” de la Copa del Mundo, el francés Jules Rimet, que había sido abogado, árbitro de futbol y dirigente deportivo, fue designado presidente de la FIFA en 1921. Desde 1924 había formado una comisión de cinco miembros que tenía la finalidad de verificar si existían las condiciones para la creación de una competencia mundial de futbol ajena a la de los Juegos Olímpicos. Tuvo que sortear muchos inconvenientes, entre ellos la retirada de la FIFA de las federaciones británicas, en esos tiempos consideradas como “los maestros”. Sin embargo, con su impulso y decisión logró que en el Congreso Ordinario de Amsterdam se acordara la celebración en 1930 de una “competición abierta a las selecciones de todas las federaciones asociadas”. Finalmente, el 18 de mayo de 1929, en el Congreso de la FIFA celebrado en Barcelona, se decidió asignar la organización del primer campeonato del mundo en 1930 al Uruguay. La decisión tenía muchos fundamentos: en el plano deportivo, los dos triunfos de la “celeste” en los Juegos Olímpicos de 1924 (París) y 1928 (Amsterdam), a la época la única manifestación que podía considerarse como “un mundial” de futbol, lo que daba a los uruguayos un primerisímo nivel; mientras que en el plano político, el año 1930 coincidía con el centenario de la Constitución de la República, lo que implicaba una celebración fastuosa y que mejor que con un evento de esta magnitud. He aquí a los delegados de la FIFA participantes en ese histórico Congreso de Barcelona.
