Displayed on the tabletop were various home-made items of lace and textile that she was offering for sale. As a student of the his- tory of art, I was all too familiar with canonised Art, with capital A, but en- tirely ignorant about domestically crafted textiles. Yet I stopped in my tracks, captivated as I was by an ungraspable aesthetics that was quite alien to me, as it was light years away from the universe of male-dominated Renaissance art. There was one piece, featuring both abstract and stylised patterns, that I found particularly attractive – despite myself. When I enquired about the price, the woman asked: ‘Are you married?’. I told her I was not. ‘Then I cannot sell this piece to you’, she said. I stood there dumbfound, unable to comprehend why this should be the case, and tried to assure her that I found the piece genuinely beautiful. Speaking in the local dialect, slowly and clearly for my benefit, she said she believed me, but that that was not the point.

A simplistic stereotypical dyad of metropolitan authority and provincial deference is examined and evidence given for a more complex flow between Museum and regions. The Introduction outlines the thesis aims and the Department’s role in the dissemination of art and design. The thesis is structured around questions examining the historical significance of Circ, the display and installation of Circ’s regional exhibitions, and the flow of influence between regions and museum. Context establishes Circ not as a straightforward continuation of Cole’s Victorian mission but as historically embedded in the post-war period.

The Changing Politics of Textiles as Portrayed on Somali Postage Stamps Heather Akou When Somalia became an independent nation in 1960, the change in power was celebrated with new postage stamps. Departing from the royal portraits and vague images of "natives" favored by their colonizers, Somalis chose to circulate detailed images of local plants, animals, artisanal products, and beautiful young women in wrapped fabrics. In the early 1960s, these images were fairly accurate representations of contemporary fashions. Over the next twenty years, with a few notable exceptions, these images became more romanticized focusing on the folk dress worn by nomads in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Confronting drought, corruption, and economic interference from the West, dictator Siad Barre (who came to power in a military coup in 1969) longed openly for the "good old days" of nomadic life. As the country became increasingly unstable in the 1980s, leading to the collapse of the national government in 1991, postal depictions of textiles and wrapped clothing became even more divorced from reality: surface patterns unrelated to the drape of the cloth, fabrics that were too thin or wrapped in impossible ways, and styles of dress that were nothing but fantasy.

Dora Jung opiskeli Helsingissä Taideteollisuuskeskuskoulun tekstiilitaiteen osastolla 1929–1932. Ennen tekstiilitaiteen opintojaan hän opiskeli Suomen Käsityön Ystävien kudontakoulussa. Hän perusti valmistumisvuonaan 1932 oman kudonta-ateljeen nimellä Dora Jung Textil. Kutomossa valmistettiin sisustustekstiilejä, kirkkotekstiilejä, 1950- luvulta alkaen uniikkeja tekstiiliteoksia julkisiin tiloihin ja joitakin vapaita taidetekstiilejä.     Textiles, Costume & Fashion with Important Groups of Books on Central Asian & Indian Textile Traditions The Research Library of Dr. Louise Mackie Former Curator of Textiles, the Cleveland Museum of Art 1,185 titles in over 1,250 volumes The Library of Dr. Louise Mackie The Mackie Library consists of some 1,250 volumes covering all aspects of the study of textiles, of all periods and on an international basis, including weavings, embroideries and needlework, lace, printed fabrics, velvets, brocades, batik, ikat and other categories, as well as costume & fashion, carpets & rugs, and tapestry. Aside from its representation of the history of Western textiles, the library also has exceptional depth in its holdings on the textiles of Central Asia and India. Dr. Louise Mackie recently retired as curator of the Department of Textiles and Costume, Cleveland Museum of Art. Previously, she was the department head and curator of the Textile and Costume Department at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada (1981-98). She was Curator of the Eastern Hemisphere Collections Textile Museum in Washington, DC (1971-80) where she trained in textiles and carpets under Irene Emery and Charles Grant Ellis. Louise Mackie Louise Mackie’s leadership as a founding director and past President of TSA (1996-1998), along with her curatorial work in the subject of Islamic textiles has contributed enormously to the textile field. Her research directives, field work, curatorial focus on the details of textile making and meaning from a broad perspective has brought new insight, documentation and understanding of the intricacies, beauty and power of textiles from the Islamic world.

    MUSSER, Bill, from Decorah, IA Otter Dreaming, a professional musician, piano instructor, composer, and conductor, will transcribe into standard notation the tune-books of Johan Arndt Mostad (1833-1909), a Norwegian immigrant who came from the community of Frosta in Trøndelag to Winneshiek County, Iowa, in 1869. The local traditional dance band Foot-Notes will then perform and record the previously lost music of Johan Arndt. REBHOLZ, Karen, from Madison, WI Ms. Rebholz will study sound adjustments done during the construction of Hardanger fiddles with Sigvald Rorlien, the director of the Hardanger fiddle building workshop at Ole Bull Akademiet in Voss, Norway. She will learn the intricacies of adjustments to the bass bar, bridge and rigging— skills not commonly understood by current US luthiers. RENNAN, Arna, from Duluth, MN Ms. Rennan will attend three major folk music gatherings in Scandinavia to interview young artists for her Nordic Roots Radio program. She will produce 20 new programs from these interviews, focusing on the trends among younger folk musicians and the spectrum between traditional folk and contemporary fusion. SHAW, Amy, from St. Paul, MN Ms. Shaw will prepare for publication an edition of a rare 1890s tunebook by Norwegian fiddler Ole Hendricks (1851-1935), who settled in western Minnesota. The 97-page manuscript is an important primary source for the study of traditional music and dance in the Scandinavian-American communities. The publication will include tune transcriptions and annotations; an introduction providing both biographical and historical context; illustrations; and a companion CD of a selection of the tunes, featuring master artists Vidor Skrede and Beth Rotto.

Inspirations are memories of Finland and inner landscapes. A focus of my examinations lays in the historical background and the ground of my choices for material, technique and colours. The practical outcomes are woven objects of paper yarn und paintings in oil on canvas. Both are speaking a different visual and sensual language, but talking about the same topic, the one of an end of searching and getting clear/finding ground. Weaving by Hand and painting are slow techniques. I choose them as a method to slow down and take a close look at the microcosms of structures and colours.
