More positive accounts are also anchored in the same tradition, interpreted in a different way. While some scholarship relies on more empirical observation and analysis, there is no single work which systematically demonstrates the relationship between Islam and democracy. This study is an attempt to fill this gap by defining Islam empirically in terms of several components and democracy in terms of the components of democratic culture— social capital, political tolerance, political engagement, political trust, and support for the democratic system—and political participation. The theories which assert that Islam is inimical to democracy are tested by examining the extent to which the Islamic and democratic components are negatively associated. Indonesia was selected for this research as it is the most populous Muslim country in the world, with considerable variation among Muslims in belief and practice. Two national mass surveys were conducted in 2001 and 2002. This study found that Islam defined by two sets of rituals, the networks of Islamic civic engagement, Islamic social identity, and Islamist political orientations (Islamism) does not have a negative association with the components of democracy.

    In Memoriam: Herbert Feith, 1930-2001 The following tribute to Herb Feith was written by Ruth McVey. It is followed by a short piece composed by Feith himself with an introductory letter by Samsuri bin Rusnali. In Melbourne, on the afternoon of November 15, 2001, Herb Feith bicycled homeward after a lunch with John Legge and Wang Gungwu. The three scholars had engaged in a lively discussion of Legge's proposed revision of his biography of Sukarno, and no doubt Herb's mind was fully occupied with new ideas on this subject as he approached the level crossing near his home. The train killed him instantly. The manner of Herb's death was a great shock, as was testified by the messages of stunned grief that arrived from all over the world. Yet somehow it also fitted him. The bicycle, in the first place: Herb had long given up on the automobile as environmentally unfriendly, ostentatious, and unnecessary for most purposes. It was probably just as well, as those who had ridden in his car in the days when he drove knew what true fear was. Once Herb plunged into a discussion, he would completely forget about his surroundings. Generations of students benefited greatly from this intellectual enthusiasm, as they found their half-developed ideas being taken seriously, teased out, and turned into far more searching observations than they had originally imagined possible. It made for a great teacher, if not a safe driver nor, alas, a safe cyclist. Most of us lose our intellectual liveliness as we age, replacing it with self- satisfaction or indifference.

Identity, White Australia, and the Volunteer Graduate Scheme 86 Conclusion 117 Bibliography 122 Abstract This thesis examines the Volunteer Graduate Scheme for Indonesia (VGS), a student-run initiative of the 1950s that sent idealistic and young Australian university graduates – including doctors, teachers, engineers, and scientific researchers – to work for the Indonesian Republic. Although less than fifty volunteers ended up serving in Indonesia through the Scheme, its cultural impact was profound: many ex-volunteers became leaders in their professions thanks in part to their experiences in Indonesia, the pool of experts who founded the academic discipline of Southeast Asian Studies in Australian universities were drawn heavily from the alumni of the VGS, and cultural organisations such as the Australian-Indonesian Association of Victoria were founded and run for decades by individuals who went through the VGS. The VGS also served as a precursor and model to other voluntary aid programs, such as the United States Peace Corps and British Voluntary Service Overseas, and is the ancestor of Australian Volunteers International. More than this, through examining the VGS and placing it in its historical context, new perspectives can be added to the historiographies of Australian-Indonesian relations, the Cold War, and post-war conceptions of Australian identity.

That this is a hollow abstraction, that such meta­ physical polar opposites exist in the real world only during crises, while the whole vast process goes on in the form of interaction--though of very unequal forces, the economic movement being by far the strongest, most primordial, most decisive--that here everything is relative and nothing absolute--this they never begin to see. As far as they are concerned, Hegel never existed. 1 The object of this study is twofold. First, to provide a critique of those inter­ pretations of the political history of Indonesia's New Order which rest upon a cul­ tural analysis of power and conflict. Second, to develop an analysis of the political history of the New Order based upon a theoretical construct which locates culture and politics within a total system of interacting historical relationships between cul­ ture, politics, and the forms and relations of production. The Tradition of Cultural Politics Culture has long been a prominent explanatory device for Western analysts of Indonesian politics, in part because orientalist approaches have strongly influenced Western studies of non-Western societies. More important, however, in recent anal­ yses has been Max Weber's analysis of social structure and political behavior in terms of systems of meaning and consciousness constructed by individuals. Clifford Geertz has been perhaps the most important exponent of theories of cultural politics as they relate to Indonesia.
