ABSTRACT During the 1940s and 1950s, around 200,000 Eurasians (Indos) of mixed European and Indonesian descent left Indonesia. In time, they formed distinct communities in The Netherlands, the United States, Australia and elsewhere. A smaller number of Indos who had chosen Indonesian citizenship or had been unable to leave remained in Indonesia. Until now, the fate of Indo communities who remained in Indonesia was largely unstudied. This thesis presents a transnational history of Indos in postcolonial Indonesia, framing their history as part of both Indonesian history and broader Indisch (Indies) Dutch history. It compares their circumstances with those of Indonesia‟s largest „foreign minority‟, Chinese Indonesians. The thesis draws on Dutch archives, newspaper accounts and oral history interviews carried out in Java and North Sulawesi, Queensland and the Netherlands. Indos comprised a significant component of the European community in late colonial society, and many also held „native‟ status. Young Indonesian independence fighters killed and tortured Indo and other families across Java in a loosely coordinated genocide during the Bersiap period in 1945-47. At least ten thousand Indos stayed in Indonesia after the transfer of sovereignty in 1949. During the New Order period (1966- 1998), they faced significant pressures to assimilate, but were occasionally held up as a „model minority‟ compared with Chinese Indonesians. Some took up work as actors and models, paving the way for the predominance of an „Indo look‟ on Indonesian television in the 1990s. Younger Indos, usually the children of expatriates, capitalised on the tradition established by older generations, so that the term „Indo‟ became synonymous with fame and stardom. From the mid-2000s, in response to popular historical understandings about ethnicity and race, Indos were more likely to be cast only as wealthy characters in Sinetron. After the fall of Suharto, in tandem with a rise in identity politics in the Netherlands, older Indos in Java began to meet regularly with other Dutch speakers.

The spirit of ukhuwah wathoniyah in Ki Hajar Dewantoro's person is caused by Equality of desire for independence and equality of residence. The equality of Indonesian territory is a strong reason in fostering ukhuwah wathoniyah. The spirit of the same brotherhood and homeland of one. As a form of togetherness in order to achieve independence. We conducted interviews with 32 Indonesian living in Melbourne collecting 10 hours of footage. Using the major themes raised by the interviewees we produced five short-form educational videos on flooding, changes in seasons and weather patterns, air pollution, development and deforestation, and improper rubbish disposal. These videos will be used by CERES to educate the school groups in the Indonesian village, and be accessible to all visitors through the CERES mobile app. We created an archive with detailed, timestamped notes that will enable the efficient creation of future videos by CERES staff as well as later IQP teams. REMAINING ANONYMOUS Using Participatory Arts-Based Methods with Migrant Women Workers in the Age of the Smartphone OBJECTIVES Background: Voices of Women Media Communities of Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese, Indonesian, and Chinese immigrants who are considered, officially, allochtoon—born in another country or having a parent from another country—have long settled in the Netherlands. Pooja Pant, a Nepalese media activist, and I were curious about their experience of becoming Dutch since we had both just arrived to live and work in Amsterdam so we co-founded Voices of Women (VOW) Media in 2007 and we partnered with various community-based organizations working in the area of migrant women’s rights1 to run participatory media workshops. In 2012, we decided to expand this work to East Asia and South Asia out of a personal desire to establish connections to the countries of our parents. Through these partnerships and over the following nine years we worked closely with women sex workers who see themselves as being invisible in society as a whole but visible to the public. In their lacking opportunity and access to resources, they are often discussed by those in power who make decisions, such as politicians, the media, or policy makers, but are not included in the discussion. To use the words of Srilatha Batliwala, in this work VOW Media explores women’s empowerment as part of “both a process and the result of that process” (1994, p. 130). In a collaborative and non-hierarchical setting we engage with communities of migrant women using participatory arts-based methodologies, including cellphilms, in order to create audiovisual media works that highlight their life stories.

Flassy Isbi-Liptek-Papua Abstract The title of this paper Natural Environment vis-à-vis Living Environment in the Culture and Philosophy of Papua Melanesia questions the Natural Environment versus Living Environment in cultural and philosophical life of the Melanesian in general and Papua in particular. In questioning that, we are confronted with three main points, first, in the daily practice of Melanesian ethnicity, especially in Papua, facing tensions that can also be called conflicts of interest between "environment" as the Natural Environment but because it is confined to foreign interests (outsiders) so it must accept the concept of the Living Environment; second, Environmental Concepts in Culture and Philosophy of Papua-Melanesia, third, Peaceful Steps as a logical consequence of the concept of sustainability.The purpose of this writing is academic and practical. Tulisan ini dianggap penting karena peristiwa Bubat yang sudah berlalu lebih tujuh abad sejak peristiwa tersebut terjadi, namun dampak dari peristiwa tesebut masih menjadiingatan umum (collective memory) masyarakat Sunda dan penggambaran tentang peristiwa Bubat tersebut sudah menjadi cerita yang diwariskan secara turun-temurun (overall livering). Pendahuluan Babakan sejarah dalam urutan kronologi di Indosia bisa dibagi ke dalam beberapa bakan sejarah yaitu; periode pertama masa Hidu-Buddha, periode kedua masa Kerajaan Islam, periode ketiga masa pendudukan Hindia Belanja, periode ke empat masa pendudukan Jepang, periode kelima masa kemerdekaan. Pada masa babakan awal (Hindu-Buddha), pada mulanya tidak ditemukan adanya perselisihan antara dua kerajaan besar Hindu Budhha di Indonesia Dua kerajaan tersebut adalah Kerajaan Sunda Pajajaran dan Kerajaan Majapahit. Dua kerajaan besar masa Hindu-Buddhaini mengidentifikasikan dua suku besar di Indonesia yaitu, Kerajaan Majapahit sebagai simbol kekuasaan suku Jawa dan Kerajaan Sunda Pajajaran sebagai simbol kekuasaan suku Sunda. Pada masa masa kedua kerajaan besar Hindu Buddha tersebut, belum ditemukan ada perselihan dan penaklukkan antara kedua kerajaan tersebut sampai terjadinya peristiwa Syaiful Azmi, Bubat: Sisi Gelap Hubungan Kerajaan Majapahit Hindu | 17 Bubat.1Setelah beberapa lama, tidak terdengar adanya permusuhan dengan Negara tetangga, sampai pada tahun 1357 terjadi sengketa yang berakhir dengan perang yang cukup seru yang disebut dengan perang Bubat.

The Japanese occupation and subsequent years ensured that this pursuit could become a reality. This thesis examines the last 4 years of the Indonesian struggle for independence between 1945 and 1949. Excessive violence prevailed during these years, both the Indonesians and the Dutch refused to relinquish hegemony on the archipelago resulting in around 160,000 casualties. The Dutch tried to forget the war of Indonesian Independence in the following years. However, whistleblowers went public in the 1960’s, resulting in further examination into the excessive violence. Eventually, the Netherlands seems to have come to terms with its own past since the first formal apologies by a Dutch representative have been made in 2005. King Willem-Alexander made a formal apology on behalf of the Crown in 2020. However, high- school education is still lacking in educating students on these sensitive topics. This thesis also discusses the postwar years and the public debate on excessive violence committed by both sides. The goal of this thesis is to inform the public of the excessive violence committed by Dutch and Indonesian soldiers during the Indonesian struggle for Independence. 1 Index Introduction

    Global Indonesia In the nineteenth century, colonial rule brought the modern world closer to the Indonesian peoples, introducing mechanized transport, all- weather roads, postal and telegraph communications, and steamship networks that linked Indonesia’s islands to each other, to Europe and the Middle East. This book looks at Indone- sia’s global importance, and traces the entwining of its peoples and economies with the wider world. The book discusses how products unique to Indonesia first slipped into regional trade networks and exposed scattered communities to the dynamic influ- ence of far- off civilizations. It focuses on economic and cultural changes that resulted in the emergence of political units organized as oligarchies or monar- chies, and goes on to look in detail at Indonesia’s relationship with Holland’s East Indies. The book analyses the attempts by politicians to negotiate ways of being modern but uniquely Indonesian, and considers the oscillations in Indonesia between movements for theocracy and democracy. It is a useful contribution for students and scholars of World History and Southeast Asian Studies.
