Introduction The copperplate inscriptions of the Maitraka period When archaeological material was available only to a contain references to serveral temples of Goddesses such as small extent, the early scholars in Gujarat tried to trace Pandura and Kottammahika at Trisangamaka, the earliest antiquity of the prevalence of Shakti-worship in Gujarat mainly references belonging to the reign of King Dronsinha (circa 500 based on the traditional accounts. Many of them were given in to 520 A.D.). the purans or puran-khandas of late origin, while some others were transmited orally through generations. Thus, epographic references allude to the prevalence, of th goddess-temples in Gujarat since 6 cent.A.D. The prevalence of shakti-worship in Gujarat probably received an impetus from Devi-mahatmya given in The evidence of sculptural remains in the form of Markandeya Puran. The origin of the worship of the Goddeess goddesses leads us to trace the antiquity of Shakti worship in in Gujarat can be traced to the primitive tribe of the Bhils and Gujarat still earlier. Excavations at Amerli have yielded two nd that it received further impetus through the Nagars and Jadeja icons of goddesses. The earlier one dated to 2 cent.A.D., is a Rajputs. However, he could not trace any evidence for its fragmentary stone-bust of a goddess holdinga spear in her prevalence in Gujarat before 1000 A.D. -

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

CHAPTER SIX EPILOGUE 230 Shivaji fought Mughals in the north and Bijapuri Sultans in the south and carved out an independent kingdom of his own out of his small Jagir of Poona. He had rare gifted qualities of winning the heart of common people, who became the basis of his Swarajya i.e., kingdom. He was a great military genius and a diplomat and above all a man of creative ability. He coronated himself on the 6th June, 1674 and declared to the world that he became independent sovereign ruler. He also declared to the world that he was no longer a jahagirdar but an independent sovereign ruler. Shivaji also founded his own administrative institutions such as Ashta Pradhan Mandal'*', a new system of military and civil administration etc. This system was based on regular payment to the officers and soldiers. They were also not hereditary. They continued in their respective position as long as they carried on their duties well. He discontinued the practice of giving lands, jagirs, saranjams to the officers including his ministers. His ministers were advisers, and remained in their offices as long as they enjoyed his confidence. The function of Shivaji*s council was merely advisory. All decision-making authority finally rested in him. Chhatrapati represented sovereign power both in theory and practice. Thus in Shivaji's time Chhatrapati was the fountain of final authority and of all sources of power. After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji on 5th April 1680, 231 Shivaji's elder son Sambhaji became Chhatrapati in the circumstances of stresses and strains. -

The Maratha scholars and historians had worked hard to construct the history of the land and people of Maharashtra. Among such scholars people like Kashinath Sane, Rajwade, Khare and Parasnis were well known luminaries in this field of history writing of Maratha. Kashinath Sane published a mass of original material like Bakhars, Sanads, letters and other state papers in his journal Kavyetihas Samgraha for more eleven years during the nineteenth century. Killer Khilats, Part 1: Legends of Poisoned ªrobes of Honourº in India
Folklore 112 (2001):23± 45 RESEARCH ARTICLE Killer Khilats, Part 1: Legends of Poisoned ªRobes of Honourº in India Michelle Maskiell and Adrienne Mayor Abstract This article presents seven historical legends of death by Poison Dress that arose in early modern India. The tales revolve around fears of symbolic harm and real contamination aroused by the ancient Iranian-in¯ uenced customs of presenting robes of honour (khilats) to friends and enemies. From 1600 to the early twentieth century, Rajputs, Mughals, British, and other groups in India participated in the development of tales of deadly clothing. Many of the motifs and themes are analogous to Poison Dress legends found in the Bible, Greek myth and Arthurian legend, and to modern versions, but all seven tales display distinc- tively Indian characteristics. The historical settings reveal the cultural assump- tions of the various groups who performed poison khilat legends in India and display the ambiguities embedded in the khilat system for all who performed these tales. Introduction We have gathered seven ª Poison Dressº legends set in early modern India, which feature a poison khilat (Arabic, ª robe of honourº ). These ª Killer Khilatº tales share plots, themes and motifs with the ª Poison Dressº family of folklore, in which victims are killed by contaminated clothing. Because historical legends often crystallise around actual people and events, and re¯ ect contemporary anxieties and the moral dilemmas of the tellers and their audiences, these stories have much to tell historians as well as folklorists. The poison khilat tales are intriguing examples of how recurrent narrative patterns emerge under cultural pressure to reveal fault lines within a given society’s accepted values and social practices. -
History Jahangir Receives Prince Khurram at Ajmer on His Return From
AJMER One of the major cities in the Indian state of Rajasthan and the centre of the eponymous Ajmer District. According to the 2011 census, Ajmer had a population of 542,321 in the city, 551,101 including its suburbs.[2] The city was established as "Ajayameru" by a Shakambhari Chahamana (Chauhan) ruler, either Ajayaraja I or Ajayaraja II, and served as the Chahamana capital until the 12th century CE.[3][4] Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. It is the base for visiting Pushkar (11 km), an ancient Hindu pilgrimage city, famous for the temple of Lord Brahma, and also a pilgrimage centre for the shrine of the Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Ajmer has been selected as one of the heritage cities for the HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of Government of India. This suggests that Ajmer was founded sometime before 1113 CE.[7] A prashasti (eulogistic inscription), issued by Vigraharaja IV and found at Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, states Ajayadeva (that is, Ajayaraja II) moved his residence to Ajmer.[3] The later text Prabandha-Kosha states that it was the 8th century king Ajayaraja I who commissioned the Ajayameru fort, which later came to be known as the Taragarh fort of Ajmer.[4] According to historian R. -

Evidence of neolithic habitation dating as far back as 7000 BC has been found in Mehrgarh in Baluchistan. However, the first notable civilization flourished in India around 2700 BC in the north western part of the Indian subcontinent, covering a large area. The civilization is referred to as the Harappan civilization. Most of the sites of this civilization developed on the banks of Indus, Ghaggar and its tributaries. Architecture The excavations at Harappa and Mohenjodaro and several other sites of the Indus Valley Civilisation revealed the existence of a very modern urban civilisation with expert town planning and engineering skills. The very advanced drainage system along with well planned roads and houses show that a sophisticated and highly evolved culture existed in India before the coming of the Aryans. -
