The origin of the worship of the Goddeess goddesses leads us to trace the antiquity of Shakti worship in in Gujarat can be traced to the primitive tribe of the Bhils and Gujarat still earlier. Excavations at Amerli have yielded two nd that it received further impetus through the Nagars and Jadeja icons of goddesses. The earlier one dated to 2 cent.A.D., is a Rajputs. However, he could not trace any evidence for its fragmentary stone-bust of a goddess holdinga spear in her prevalence in Gujarat before 1000 A.D. -

Colonial Archaeology: 070 333 Spring 2006 Prof C. Schrire [email protected] Room 201/202 RAB Phone: 932 9006 Course Outline: This course will teach the rudiments of identification and analysis of colonial artifacts dating from about 1600-1900 AD. Our teaching collection includes a variety of ceramics, pipes, glass and small finds. The course if taught largely by supervision and not lectures. Students will sort collections, draw objects, measure objects and identify them according to numerous criteria. Course Requirements: A prerequisite for this course is 070: 208, Survey of Historical Archaeology, normally taught in the Fall term. Students for whom this requirement was waived are expected to study a suitable textbook on the subject, such as Orser, C. 1995 Historical Archaeology and Deetz, J In small things forgotten. Students will attend one three hour class, once a week. During this time they will handle material, analyze it, and draw objects. Each student will need a clean writing pad or notebook, a pad of graph paper, pencils, colored pencils, eraser, a ruler, and a divider. There will be two exams, a midterm and final. Useful Texts: 1. Sackler Colloquium of the National Academy of Sciences Early Cities: New Perspectives on Pre-Industrial Urbanism Final Revisions: Oct. 1, 2005 Indus Urbanism: New Perspectives on its Origin and Character Jonathan Mark Kenoyer, Department of Anthropology, University of Wisconsin, Madison During the past two decades a variety of archaeological research projects focused on the Indus civilization have made it possible to refine earlier models regarding the origin and character of this distinctive urban society. Excavations at the major city of Harappa have revealed a long developmental sequence from its origins to its eventual decline and subsequent transformation. Recent excavations at the large urban centers of Dholavira and Rakhigarhi, along with reexamination of the largest city of Mohenjo-daro have shown that the development of urbanism was not uniform throughout the greater Indus region (Kenoyer 1998). Detailed studies within each city have revealed many shared characteristics as well as some unique features relating to the dynamic process of city growth and decline. In addition to the excavations of larger urban centers, regional surveys and extensive excavations at smaller settlements have provided a new perspective on the nature of interaction between large and small urban centers and even rural settlements. The increase in radiocarbon dates from well-documented contexts in stratigraphic excavations has helped to refine the chronology of settlements in both core areas and rural areas (Meadow and Kenoyer 2005b; Possehl 2002a; Possehl 2002c). On the basis of a more refined chronology and comparisons of the material culture, it appears that some rural settlements may have been directly linked to the major cities, while others appear to have had relatively little direct contact during some time periods (Meadow and Kenoyer 2005b). -

It may take forms including art ware, tile, figurines, sculpture, and tableware. Ceramic art is one of the arts, particularly the visual arts. Of these, it is one of the plastic arts. While some ceramics are considered fine art, some are considered to be decorative, industrial or applied art objects. Ceramics may also be considered artifacts in archaeology. Ceramic art can be made by one person or by a group of people. In a pottery or ceramic factory, a group of people design, manufacture and decorate the art ware. Products from a pottery are sometimes referred to as "art pottery".[1] In a one-person pottery studio, ceramists or potters produce studio pottery. Most traditional ceramic products were made from clay (or clay mixed with other materials), shaped and subjected to heat, and tableware and decorative ceramics are generally still made this way. In modern ceramic engineering usage, ceramics is the art and science of making objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials by the action of heat. It excludes glass and mosaic made from glass tesserae. There is a long history of ceramic art in almost all developed cultures, and often ceramic objects are all the artistic evidence left from vanished cultures. Elements of ceramic art, upon which different degrees of emphasis have been placed at different times, are the shape of the object, its decoration by painting, carving and other methods, and the glazing found on most ceramics. 2. -

Significantly, the cultural heritage of this civilization portrays it as indigenous civilization. Its artifacts endorse its aboriginality and attract the scholars to ponder over its cultural heritage. For the assessment of its cultural heritage, anthropology, archaeology, and ethnology are the best tools to distinguish it appropriately. Being a renowned civilization in the world, much of the archaeological work has been done, but less in the field of anthropology and ethnography. The urban life of the people of this civilization refers the zenith of advance the metropolitan approach that presents social, administrative, and political understanding about its people. The focusing aims of this manuscript denominate the cultural heritage, anthropology, ethnography and to assess the social, political, religious, agricultural, art, architecture, rites and rituals, traditions, and norms of the ancient people of Harappan Civilization. ICONS AND SIGNS FROM THE ANCIENT HARAPPA Amelia Sparavigna ∗ Dipartimento di Fisica, Politecnico di Torino C.so Duca degli Abruzzi 24, Torino, Italy Abstract Written words probably developed independently at least in three places: Egypt, Mesopotamia and Harappa. In these densely populated areas, signs, icons and symbols were eventually used to create a writing system. It is interesting to see how sometimes remote populations are using the same icons and symbols. Here, we discuss examples and some results obtained by researchers investigating the signs of Harappan civilization. 1. Introduction The debate about where and when the written words were originated is still open. Probably, writing systems developed independently in at least three places, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Harappa. In places where an agricultural civilization flourished, the passage from the use of symbols to a true writing system was early accomplished. It means that, at certain period in some densely populated area, signs and symbols were eventually used to create a writing system, the more complex society requiring an increase in recording and communication media. Signs, symbols and icons were always used by human beings, when they started carving wood or cutting stones and painting caves. We find signs on drums, textiles and pottery, and on the body itself, with tattooing. To figure what symbols used the human population when it was mainly composed by small groups of hunter-gatherers, we could analyse the signs of Native Americans. Our intuition is able to understand many of these old signs, because they immediately represent the shapes of objects and animals. It is then quite natural that signs and icons, born among people in a certain region, turn out to be used by other remote populations. -

Evidence of neolithic habitation dating as far back as 7000 BC has been found in Mehrgarh in Baluchistan. However, the first notable civilization flourished in India around 2700 BC in the north western part of the Indian subcontinent, covering a large area. The civilization is referred to as the Harappan civilization. Most of the sites of this civilization developed on the banks of Indus, Ghaggar and its tributaries. Architecture The excavations at Harappa and Mohenjodaro and several other sites of the Indus Valley Civilisation revealed the existence of a very modern urban civilisation with expert town planning and engineering skills. The very advanced drainage system along with well planned roads and houses show that a sophisticated and highly evolved culture existed in India before the coming of the Aryans. -

Intermediation of the maritime tin trade through the Indian Ocean and waterways of Rivers Mekong, Irrawaddy, Salween, Ganga, Sarasvati, Sindhu, Persian Gulf, Tigris-Euphrates, the Mediterranean is done by ancient Meluhha (mleccha) artisans and traders, the Bhāratam Janam celebrated by R̥ ṣi Viśvāmitra in R̥ gveda (RV 3.53.12).
