KNOW, NO MERCY, CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER TYRRANICIDE originally formed on Halloween of 1984 in Pleasanton, CA under the name of Mayhem. The group eventually solidified its lineup of guitarists/vocalists Jeff Hill and Tim Narducci, drummer Mike Serafin, and Ty Turner on bass before being rechristened TYRRANICIDE prior to recording their first demo in 1986. Existing on the fringe of the fabled Bay Area thrash scene’s heyday, TYRRANICIDE rubbed elbows with everyone from future legends such as METALLICA and EXODUS, to second-wave favorites like SACRILEGE B.C. and ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT. The band was initially adamant, however, that their thrashing attack not be pigeonholed as simply “speedcore” or “crossover,” desiring instead for their inclusive attitude to welcome a range of different fans. ARTIST: TYRRANICIDE TITLE: God Save The Scene After securing an appearance on the Metal Blade/Death Records Complete Death II compilation (Deluxe Edition) LP in 1987 alongside contemporaries from IMPULSE MANSLAUGHTER to ANGKOR WAT, LABEL: Divebomb Records TYRRANICIDE hit the studio in October of 1988 to track their lone full-length LP, God Save the CAT#: DIVE160-2 Scene. Good things come in threes, and this third LP is everything I wanted in under eighteen minutes of grind. True story, the band flipped their van in 2012 and lived to continue the tour with minimal scrapes besides a full leg brace and I think that speaks everything of them... there is NO STOPPING them. THE MELVINS (USA) Album: «Hold It In» (Ipecac Recordings, VÖ: 10.10.2014) The Melvins return with a brand new album: „Hold It In“ To Be released 10 October via Ipecac Recordings. "Hold It In“ is a refreshing piece of fiction in a boring world of fact and bullsh*t," said Buzz Osborne. http://www.themelvins.net/ https://www.facebook.com/melvinsarmy The ever prolific Melvins return with „Hold It In“, their first studio album as a quartet since 2010's The Bride Screamed Murder. Joining Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover for the 12-song album are Butthole Surfers' guitar player Paul Leary and bass player JD Pinkus. The album was recorded in both Los Angeles and Austin earlier this year. "Paul is one of the best guitar players I have ever heard and Pinkus has an outside the box type of approach to both guitar and bass that you just have to let it ride. I can't believe this actually happened. I'm thrilled." "It's very rare you get a chance to work with three folks from the 'Break A Wish' foundation, all at the same time," said Pinkus. "I believe they'll remember their experience with me forever (or until they finally all lose their fight with S.I.D.S)." “Brass Cupcake is possibly my favorite track on „Hold It In“ We wrote this song with Pinkus and Paul in mind, once we knew this project was a go,” explained Dale Crover. “It's our version of what we think pop music should sound like.

  • Ink 19 :: Daniel Johnston Page 1 of 6
    Ink 19 :: Daniel Johnston Page 1 of 6 Daniel Johnston by Stein Haukland courtesy www.gammonrecords.com His legend tends to overshadow his genius, but with his new album Fear Yourself , Daniel Johnston is out to prove his real value. Hailed by everyone from Sonic Youth and Kurt Cobain to Sparklehorse as one of our times' most important songwriters and performers, Johnston has created a musical universe quite unlike anything else out there today. The general media may want to focus on the years spent in mental hospital and on how he distributed his early tapes -- mostly songs about Casper the Friendly Ghost, super heroes and popular stars of the day -- by giving them away to pretty girls on the streets. But as his work over the years so convincingly attests, Johnston is much more than some original character. Daniel Johnston writes songs of classic beauty with melodies that twist and turn and take you places you've never been before. His performances are emotionally naked and almost shockingly honest. Some early albums have been marred by an absurdly lo-fi production, or by studio musicians unable to provide the necessary sound for his songs. But on Fear Yourself , Johnston has gotten together with Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous -- another eccentric whose reputation too often overshadows his unique ambition and sheer talent -- to create one of the finest albums you've never heard. Talking on the phone from his home in Texas, Johnston proved to be every inch as honest and unpretentious as his music suggests he'd be. I just got your album, and I'm really impressed by it.

By far the most pervasive and long-lived was the revival of psychedelia, that kept recurring throughout the Eighties and the Nineties. Los Angeles had its own movement, the "Paisley Underground". Psychedelia became merely a pretext to concoct baroque, oneiric and hypnotic sounds, often with the help of keyboards and strings. Byrds-ian jangling guitars and naive melodies a` la Hollies dominate Emergency Third Rail Power Trip (feb/mar - oct 1983) by Rain Parade (1), with Matt Piucci on vocals and Dave Roback on guitar, as well as the EP Baroque Hoedown (fall 1982 - dec 1982) and the album Sixteen Tambourines (? 1983 - oct 1983) by Mike Quercio's Three O'Clock (1). Needless to say, the Paisley Underground was only the tip of the iceberg. The Dream Syndicate (12), formed by guitarists Steve Wynn and Karl Precoda and bassist Kendra Smith, acted as the natural liaison between Television (and the new wave in general) and the new generation of psychedelic rockers.

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › Band of the Week › News Features Reviews Playlists Band of the Week: Butthole Surfers Resident sound-nerd Tom Killingbeck thumbs through reams of musty vinyl so you don’t have to. Here are his weekly recommendations… Monday 11 April 2011 #22: Butthole Surfers Who: Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary, King Coffey. Jeff Pinkus, Teresa Nervosa. When: 1970’s-Present. Where: USA. Why: Few bands can claim to have achieved as much infamy and success having given themselves a ridiculous, entirely uncommercial name as the Butthole Surfers. Hailing from Texas, Gibby Haynes was the son of local TV personality ‘Mr. Peppermint’ and seemed primed for a conventional life; captain of his college’s basketball team, and the school’s ‘Accountant of the Year’. But, despite his jock veneer, Haynes was a freak at heart, publishing a zine full of comedic descriptions and pictures of diseases called Strange V.D. with partner in crime Paul Leary. The pair dropped out and tried to start a business selling Lee Harvey Oswald fan merchandise, before deciding that forming a band might be a better venture. It didn’t take long before the two, having recruited a rhythm section in brothers Scott and Quinn Matthews, were spotted by Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, and signed to his label Alternative Tentacles. After a couple of years, and following the release of their insane debut LP, which combined rabid punk with multifarious surreal elements, the line-up fell into place.

• Kelley Hayes - Guitar Scooter Ward - Vocals/Guitar
    Kelley Hayes - guitar Scooter Ward - vocals/guitar Jeremy Marshall - bass Sam McCandless - drums After the dawn of Alternative Rock, dozens of bands began focusing their negative energy to create spiteful songs that resonated with crashing guitars and howling, pain-stricken vocals. Depression and frustration became the emotional conditions of the hour, and the music scene became glutted with groups that either feigned despair, or were so bleak they became inextricably tangled in their own gloom. Today, in an era where angst and volume have become passe, there are still a handful of bands that choose to internalize anguish and regurgitate it as a visceral, deeply moving melody. One of those is Jacksonville, Florida's Cold, but Cold aren't your average self-immolating neo-grunge outfit. While numerous heavy riffing alternative bands wallow in their pain, Cold revel in the dark, celebrating its tense, inviting grip and embracing its all-consuming energy. "I'm happy with the darkness," says frontman Scooter Ward. "I've had a negative outlook for so long. And the way I see stuff has always been bleak, so I've learned to make that good. I don't sit in the dark all the time like Trent Reznor or anything. I just like to write songs that express how I feel. I think the best songs written are the ones about pain and torment." Cold's self-titled album voices the band's nihilistic outlook with lumbering beats, twisting guitar lines, surging rhythms and rough, raspy vocals.
