Right now, our society exhibits every major characteristic necessary for revo- lution. Historian James DeFronzo has laid out the common factors working for a ‘successful’ revolution1 (though all five are hardly ever all at work at once); mass dissent, elite dissent, unifying motive, state crisis, and world permissiveness2. It takes no professional or specialist to see the bulk of these factors at work here and now. Revolution is the response to a change in standards in almost all categories of social life within a given system. Traditionally this has occurred during a period of modernization where the State has been a bar from reaching the potential that it’s ‘citizens’ feel they are due (rightly or wrongly). They occur at points when social stratification is at an extreme and the masses are increasingly being marginalized. -

Mike K., 924 Gilman Street One of the ideas behind ABC is breaking down the barriers between bands and people and making everyone equal. There is no Us and Them. Chris Boarts-Larson, ABC No Rio Kurt Cobain once told an interviewer, “punk rock should mean freedom.”1 The Nirvana singer was arguing that punk, as an idea, had the potential to tran- scend the boundaries of any particular sound or style, allowing musicians an enormous degree of artistic autonomy. But while punk music has often served as a platform for creative expression and symbolic protest, its libratory potential stems from a more fundamental source. Punk, at its core, is a form of direct action. Instead of petitioning the powerful for inclusion, the punk movement has built its own elaborate network of counter-institutions, including music venues, media, record labels, and distributors. These structures have operated most notably as cultural and economic alternatives to the corporate entertainment industry, and, as such, they should also be understood as sites of resistance to the privatizing 0026-3079/2013/5202-023$2.50/0 American Studies, 52:2 (2013): 23-42 23 24 Dawson Barrett agenda of neo-liberalism. For although certain elements of punk have occasion- ally proven marketable on a large scale, the movement itself has been an intense thirty-year struggle to maintain autonomous cultural spaces.2 When punk emerged in the mid-1970s, it quickly became a subject of in- terest to activists and scholars who saw in it the potential seeds of a new social movement. -

This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. SALISBURY UNIVERSITY Undergraduate Academic Journal BLACK GIRL M/\G/C Volume 2 – Fall 2020 Salisbury University Offce of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (OURCA) Enough Is Enough Eric Johnson Jr. (Featured on the Cover) ABSTRACT Racism has led to continuous confict between people since the beginning of time, and it is time for this evil to end – enough is enough. Since the beginning of 2020, we have lost many lives due to COVID-19 and police brutality as the whole world watched. Police brutality is the use of excessive force by an offcer, which can be legally defned as a civil rights violation. Over the years, we have lost many of our citizens and justice was not served. Eric Garner, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbrey … and so many more. The fact that I can fll at least two pages with victims is sickening – enough is enough! The brutality against African Americans this year has spiked to a recent all-time high. The videos of police killings have flled the news and internet – enough is enough. The death of George Floyd was heartbreaking. I personally couldn’t even fnish watching because the video was just so gruesome. All the lives that we have lost this year are heartbreaking – enough is enough. In this moment, the time we are in now, we do not need division. Instead, we need to come together in unity. The purpose of these photos is to show that enough is enough. I believe that one day we will all see the light at the end of this dark tunnel, but we have a long way still to go in order to come together. -
On Social Ecology and Climate Justice

Jacobsen, ed., Climate Justice and the Economy: Social mobilization, knowledge and the political (Routledge 2018) On Social Ecology and the Movement for Climate Justice – Brian Tokar, Institute for Social Ecology and University of Vermont Environmental Program Abstract: The theory and praxis of social ecology have guided social movements seeking a radical, counter- systemic ecological outlook since the 1960s, advancing goals of transforming society’s relationship to non-human nature and reharmonizing human communities’ ties to the natural world. This chapter reviews the philosophy and political outlook of social ecology, its multifaceted contributions to social movements past and present, and its emerging contributions to addressing current climate policy challenges. These include the viability of proposed transition strategies toward a fossil-free future, the potentialities and limitations of localist, community-centered responses to climate change, the problems inherent in current market-driven models of renewable energy development, and the potential contributions of reconstructive, neo-utopian outlooks to contemporary climate politics. We conclude that, despite the ever-present threat of climate catastrophe, a genuinely transformative climate justice movement needs to advance a forward-looking view of an improved quality of life for most people in a future freed from fossil fuel dependence. Complexity Theory & Law: Mapping an Emergent Jurisprudence, Law, Science and Society Series (Routledge, Forthcoming) 11 Nonlinearity, autonomy and resistant law Lucy Finchett-Maddock* It can be a little difficult to plot a timeline of social centres when you’re dealing outside of linear time. – Interviewee from rampART collective, 2009 in Finchett-Maddock (2016, p. 168) This chapter argues that informal and communal forms of law, such as that of social centres, occupy and enact a form of spatio-temporal ‘nonlinear informality’, as opposed to a reified linearity of state law that occurs as a result of institutionalising processes of private property. Complexity theory argues the existence of both linear and nonlinear systems, whether they be regarding time, networks or otherwise. Working in an understanding of complexity theory framework to describe the spatio-temporality of law, all forms of law are argued as nonlinear, dependent on the role of uncertainty within supposedly linear and nonlinear systems and the processes of entropy in the emergence of law. ‘Supposedly’ linear, as in order for state law to assert its authority, it must become institutionalised, crystallising material architectures, customs and symbols that we know and recognise to be law. Its appearance is argued as linear as a result of institutionalisation, enabled by the elixir of individual private property and linear time as the congenital basis of its authority. But linear institutionalisation does not account for the role of uncertainty (resistance or resistant laws) within the shaping of law and demonstrates state law’s violent totalitarianism through institutionalising absolute time. -
