Initially, investigations targeted extreme- left, especially anarchist, groups (the so-called ‘red trail’), since the available evi- dence appeared to point in their direction. Later investigations started to probe an alternative path, the so-called ‘black trail’, which pointed the finger at extreme- right groups as the culprits for the massacres, albeit acting in ways that would pin the blame upon the extreme left. In connection to this discovery, investigating magistrates also brought to light the existence of a strategy, which became widely known as the Strategy of Tension, whose aim was to create an atmosphere of sub- version and fear in the country so as to promote a turn to an authoritarian type of government. Since the strategy was mainly directed at containing communism in Italy (especially in the light of the formation of centre-left governments from 1963, and increasing unrest on the part of students and workers in 1968 and 1969), it was an essential part of this strategy that the threat of political subversion should be seen as coming from the left, not from the right. This explained to many why much of the early evidence had appeared to point in the direction of anarchist groups.

These trips are only the tip of the iceberg of Russia’s increasing influence in Europe and its policy of looking after new allies inside the EU. Contrary to what many pun- dits claim about Russia’s being outside Europe, Russia is in Europe, through a good many channels. Subsequent sections discuss the war’s social impact; the structure and development of the Swiss labour movement; pre-war strike activities and strike discourses; various forms of labour protest on the road to the general strike; and eventually the latter’s outcome and aftermath. It is argued that the most serious crisis of the modern Swiss Confederation allows for no simplistic explanation, but resulted from a complex combination of local, national and transnational factors, some of which are still under-researched. • Julius Evola
Julius Evola Baron Giulio Cesare Andrea Evola (/ɛˈvoʊlə/; Italian: [ˈɛːvola];[1] 19 May 1898 – Julius Evola 11 June 1974), better known as Julius Evola, was an Italian philosopher, painter, and esotericist. He has been described as a "fascist intellectual,"[2] a "radical traditionalist,"[3] "antiegalitarian, antiliberal, antidemocratic, and antipopular,"[4] and as having been "the leading philosopher of Europe's neofascist movement."[4] Evola is popular in fringe circles, largely because of his extreme metaphysical, magical, and supernatural beliefs (including belief in ghosts, telepathy, and alchemy),[5] and his extreme traditionalism and misogyny. He himself termed his philosophy "magical idealism." Many of Evola's theories and writings were centered on his idiosyncratic mysticism, occultism, and esoteric religious studies,[6][7][8] and this aspect of his work has influenced occultists and esotericists. Evola also justified rape (among other forms of male domination of women) because he saw it "as a natural expression of male desire". This misogynistic outlook stemmed from his extreme right views on gender roles, which demanded absolute submission from women.[6][7][8][9][10] Baron Julius Evola, early 1940s According to the scholar Franco Ferraresi, "Evola's thought can be considered one of the most radical and consistent anti-egalitarian, anti-liberal, anti-democratic, and Born Giulio Cesare Andrea anti-popular systems in the twentieth century. It is a singular (though not necessarily Evola original) blend of several schools and traditions, including German idealism, 19 May 1898 Eastern doctrines, traditionalism, and the all-embracing Weltanschauung of the Rome, Kingdom of interwar conservative revolutionary movement with which Evola had a deep Italy personal involvement".[11] Historian Aaron Gillette described Evola as "one of the Died 11 June 1974 most influential fascist racists in Italian history".[12] He admired SS head Heinrich (aged 76) Himmler, whom he once met.[12] Evola spent World War II working for the Rome, Italy [8] Sicherheitsdienst.

  • Root Causes of Terrorism: Myths, Reality and Ways Forward
Root Causes of Terrorism Addressing the causes of a problem is often more effective than trying to fight its symptoms and effects. In Root Causes of Terrorism, a team of international experts analyses the possibilities and limitations of preventing and reducing terrorism by addressing the factors that give rise to it and sustain it. The questions raised include: • What are the main circumstances that provide preconditions for the emergence of various types of terrorism? • What are the typical precipitants that trigger terrorist campaigns? • To what extent is it possible to reduce the problem of terrorism by influencing these causes and circumstances? • Should we address those factors that sustain terrorist campaigns rather than root causes? Tore Bjørgo is Senior Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), and Research Director and Professor of Police Science at the Norwe- gian Police University College. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “Don’t Trust Anybody, Not Even Us”: Kafka’s Realism as Anarchist Modernism Abstract Franz Kafka’s personal interest in and contact with the anarchist movement have been fairly well documented, and many have pointed to affinities between his work and anarchist ideas. At the same time, a growing body of scholarship has documented the influence of anarchist politics on modernist aesthetics per se, primarily in terms of a shared resistance to representation—a project that Kafka appears not to share, or at least one he pursues in a very different way. This essay redescribes the strategies of representation found at work in novels such as The Trial and stories such as “The Refusal” in relation to anarchism, and thereby to contribute to a better understanding both of Kafka’s political engagements and his unique form of narrative realism.
