CREATION HONORING THE CREATOR TODAY’S FLOWERS are placed to the glory of God by Bill & Bobbi Mouser in celebration of their 45th Wedding Anniversary. Honor our Lord with your placement of flowers as you give thanks for special times such as birthdays, anniversaries, Baptisms, or other significant events or remembrances. The chart for 2021 is posted in the Main Hallway. You may also call or e-mail the Church Office to make a designation. Flower arrangements are $30 each. You may choose to place one or both. Arrangements may be taken home following the 10:45 Divine Service. WORD OF THE WEEK PENTECOST – The Old Testament Feast of Pentecost – a spring harvest festival – was fifty days after Passover, the culmination of the feast of weeks [Exodus 34:22,23]. The Christian Church adopted this term when – ten days after our Lord’s Ascension – the apostles received the fulfillment of Jesus’ promises [Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,5,8] and became bold witnesses of the Gospel.

THE WORD PROCLAIMED & PONDERED THE LUTHERAN HOUR – The person who excels in his work will be noticed by kings. Rev. Michael Zeigler talks about the King who took note of us before we did any work (Proverbs 22:29). Listen to “Before Kings” with Lutheran Hour Speaker Michael Zeigler on WOAI 1200 at 6:00 am on Sunday, May 30. SPEAKING OF LIFE – The only ways embryos differ from adults are age, location, appearance, and ability. These qualities present no obstacle to the Lord and Giver of life. He easily and eagerly overcomes helplessness (Ezekiel 37:9-10) and distances (Acts 2:9-11) to bestow sanctity on the youngest and the oldest of us (Acts 2:17-18). Will it not delight us just as much to declare it? MISSIONARY OF THE WEEK REV. CARLOS WINTERLE, with his wife Lídia, serves our Lord Jesus and His Church in southeast Africa where he is the coordinator of theological education for the Igreja Luterana da Concórdia em Moçambique (Concordia Lutheran Church in Mozambique). This small church body is working toward a partner church relationship with the LCMS. See more information about the Winterles on page 7. CROWN OF LIFE SERVANTS & EVENTS SILVER SERVERS – We are hoping many of you are ready to resume some activities. It’s been too long! We are planning to meet for lunch on Wednesday, June 9, at 11:30 am at Milano’s Italian Grill (19239 Stone Oak Parkway). More details to come as we approach the date. If you are interested in attending, please email Jim Willis at [email protected] or contact Meg Ware at 210-394- 5634. CANS FOR CHRIST gathers your aluminum cans here at church (on the west side of the CLC), takes them to a recycling center, and sends the proceeds to support Lutheran Bible Translators. This month an amount of $58.31 was collected. Thank you to all who are contributing to support this mission. PENTECOST READERS IN FOREIGN LANGAGES WHAT WILL YOU READ? Many of you know this tradition here at Crown of Life: echoing the multitude of languages given to the first disciples on that great Pentecost described in Acts 2. Perhaps it was a language you spoke at home when young. Perhaps it was a language you learned in school or as part of your military duty or employment. Perhaps it was a language which your ancestors spoke, and which you can read. As part of the Second Reading in the Divine Service for the Pentecost Festival on Sunday, May 23, as the Reader (in English) comes to the right point in his lection (Acts 2:17 and 21), many will read aloud in other languages. Please speak with Pastor Barz about being one of these readers in the 8:00 am, the

10:45 am, or both Divine Services.

The Rev. Dr. Carlos Walter Winterle

Serving in Mozambique Rev. Carlos Winterle – with his wife Lídia – serves our Lord Jesus and His Church in southeast Africa where he is the coordinator of theological education for the Igreja Luterana da Concórdia em Moçambique (Concordia Lutheran Church in Mozambique). This small church body is working toward a partner church relationship with The Lutheran Church Missouri . Winterle was born and raised in Brasil, where he was ordained as a pastor in 1973. He was elected President of the Igreja Luterana do Brasil in 1998, serving in that role until 2006. He then moved to Kenya, serving there until 2010. He was pastor of St. Thomas Lutheran Church of Cape Town, South Africa beginning in 2011, also taking the role of Rector at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Pretoria. While at Pretoria – and because of his fluency in Portuguese – he began work in Mozambique, teaching and encouraging this small Lutheran church body. In 2015, the first eight indigenous pastors of this young church body were ordained. A number of other Mozambique men are being prepared for the pastoral office. Pray for this servant of Christ and for these under- shepherds of our Lord’s flock that they be faithful stewards. Pastor Winterle shared this from one of his visits to the Lutheran congregations of Mozambique: “In one of the churches, when I was addressing the candidates for Holy Baptism and I asked them: “Do you renounce the , all his works and all his ways” and, knowing the big role the evil spirits play in the traditional African religions, I added: “And do you renounce all the evil spirits?” And all the people answered, “Yes!” and one old woman shouted, “Never more! Never more!” A very important step for the ILCM was the publication (also in 2015) of Luther’s Small Catechism in the local Chisena language. Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Mozambique and for strength and health for our Lord’s servant, Carlos Winterle.
