INTRODUCTION The word of God is a refining fire. Jesus is the great divide in human history. He invites our undivided attention and devotion. Today, in the assembly, we are surrounded by “so great a cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12:1). In the word and in the holy communion we are invited yet again to look to Jesus, “the pioneer and perfecter of our ” (Hebrews 12:12:2).

CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

GATHERING “Faith of Our Fathers” [Tune: St. Catherine, ELW 812] 1 Faith of our fathers, living still 2 The , chained in prisons dark, in spite of dungeon, fire, and sword. were still in heart and conscience free; Oh, how our hearts beat high with joy and blest would be their children’s fate whene’er we hear that glorious word. if they, like them, should die for thee. Father of our fathers, holy faith, Faith of our fathers, holy faith, we will be true to you till death. we will be true to you till death. 3 Faith of our fathers! We will love both friend and foe in all our strife; proclaim thee too, as love knows how, by saving word and faithful life. Faith of our fathers, holy faith, we will be true to you till death.

Words: Frederick W. Faber, 1814-1863, alt. Public domain.

GATHERING

INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

CONFESSION P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no se- crets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen.

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

3

P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

GREETING P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.

HYMN OF PRAISE

4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. O God, judge eternal, you love justice and hate oppression, and you call us to share your zeal for truth. Give us courage to take our stand with all victims of bloodshed and greed, and, following your servants and prophets, to look to the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen.

WORD

FIRST READING—Jeremiah 23:23-29 Please see the back page of this worship folder. Because Jeremiah preaches the unpopular message of God’s judgment, he suffers rejection. Today’s reading distinguishes between the true prophet, like Jeremiah, who speaks God’s word, and the false prophet who misleads the people through dreams. One is like wheat; the other like worthless straw.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

PSALMODY—Psalm 82 P: God has taken his place in the divine council; C: in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: P: “How long will you judge unjustly C: and show partiality to the wicked? P: Give justice to the weak and the orphan; C: maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute.

5

P: Rescue the weak and the needy; C: deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

P: They have neither knowledge nor understanding, C: they walk around in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

P: I say, “You are gods, C: children of the Most High, all of you; P: nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, C: and fall like any prince.”

P: Rise up, O God, judge the earth; C: for all the nations belong to you!

P: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; C: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND READING—Hebrews 11:29—12:2 Please see the back page of this worship folder. The author of Hebrews presents us with rich stories of faith. In a long list of biblical heroes, we find exam- ples of trust in God that enabled them to face the trials of life faithfully. In addition to this “cloud of witness- es,” we have Jesus, the perfect model of faithful endurance.

After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION P: Alleluia. My sheep hear my voice. C: I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia. (John 10:27)

GOSPEL—Luke 12:49-56 Please see the back page of this worship folder. Jesus delivers harsh words about the purifying and potentially divisive effects of obedience to God’s call. The way of the cross often leads follow- ers to encounter hostility and rejection, even from those they love.

Before the reading: P: The holy gospel according to Luke. C: Glory to you, O Lord.

After the reading: P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Hymn 659 “Lord of Our Life”

Stand, as you are able.

APOSTLES’ CREED P: God has made us God’s people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under , was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into . The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life ☩ everlasting. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Treasuring your promise to hear us when we call, we pray for the church, those in need, and all of your creation.

After each petition:

P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.

The prayers conclude: P: All these things and more we ask in the name of our risen Lord, Jesus Christ, by the power of your Holy Spirit. C: Amen.

OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, for the greening earth given for all, for the talents we are given to share, and for this bread and wine. Transform us to be the body of Christ, that, feasting on this food and drink, our lives may reflect your generosity; through Christ our Lord. C: Amen.

MEAL

PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the of , with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

8

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my ☩ body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my ☩ blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION P: God invites you to this table of bounty. Come, the banquet is ready.

UPCOMING COMMEMORATIONS

August 20—Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux, died 1153 Bernard was a Cistercian monk who became an abbot of great spir- itual depth. He was a mystical writer deeply devoted to the humanity of Christ who emphasized the inner human experience of prayer and contemplation. He was critical of one of the foremost theologians of the day, Peter Abelard, because he believed Abelard’s approach to faith was too rational and did not provide sufficient room for mystery. Bernard’s devotional writings are still read today. His sermon on the Song of Solomon treats that Old Testament book as an allegory of Christ’s love for humanity. Bernard wrote several hymns that are still sung today in translation, including:

449/450 “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded” 554 “O Jesus, King Most Wonderful”

August 24—Bartholomew, Apostle Bartholomew is mentioned as one of Jesus’ disciples in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The list in John does not include him but rather Na- thanael. These two are therefore assumed to be the same person. Except for his name on these lists of the Twelve, little is known. Some traditions say Bartholomew preached in India or Armenia fol- lowing the resurrection. In art, Bartholomew is pictured holding a flay- ing knife to indicate the manner in which he was killed.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS WHO SERVED AT L.I.N.K. LAST WEEK Thanks to all the volunteers, who brought food and/or served those meals. “If you give some of your own food to [feed] those who are hungry and to satisfy [the needs of] those who are humble, then your light will rise in the dark, and your darkness will become as bright as the noonday sun” (Isaiah 58:10).

GENEROSITY THOUGHT “Do you think that I have come to give peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!” (Luke 12:51). Jesus came to divide us out of the world, to carve out a people for himself redeemed by his blood and trusting his word. The world hates this word, but for us it is life and salvation. We seek to follow Jesus’ word in all things because we know him who gave us the word. We know he always seeks to bless us.

A GREAT WAY YOU CAN HELP A HURTING FRIEND Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative who is going through a difficult time? Here’s a great way you can help them—tell them about our Stephen Minis- try! Stephen Ministers are members of Immanuel-University who have re- ceived special training to provide high quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are grieving the loss of a loved one, coping with a cancer diagnosis, going through a divorce or separation, battling a chronic illness (or caring for a spouse or parent who is chronically ill), expe- riencing a great deal of stress, facing the loss of a job—or encountering any of countless other life challenges. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and pro- vide emotional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It’s free, and it’s a powerful way you can help a hurting friend. To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with Stephen Ministry Leader, Pastor Randy. Our Stephen Ministers are there to care!

IMMANUEL’S FINANCIAL PICTURE THROUGH JULY 2019

July Offerings Sunday General Fund Offering July 7 $7,804 July 14 $5,470 July 21 $5,177 July 28 $4,269 $22,720

To meet our General Fund budgeted expenses approved for 2019, we need to receive an average Sunday offering of $7,212.

As of July 31, the total offerings received for the General Fund are $194,990. Our expens- es, though, have been $206,932, resulting in a net income loss of $11,942.

Immanuel’s yearly budget for the General Fund is $372,000. Imagine how much more dire our financial situation would be if we had fully spent 7/12 of the approved budget (January- July). (Thank you to our committees and Church Council for holding spending to only that which is absolutely necessary.) Rather than a net income loss of $11,942, the shortfall would have been $22,418.

Some of the net income loss can be traced directly to three blizzards last winter. Two bliz- zards drastically reduced attendance and offerings, while the third blizzard resulted in the cancellation of Sunday’s worship services. Another contributing factor to the net income loss has been the large reduction in attendance since May. Not attending church on Sun- day often results in no offering given or mailed that week. A third contributing factor is a greater giving to Restricted Funds than to General Fund.

Please consider how you might help Immanuel financially at this time. It is estimated that if the above mentioned trend continues, the General Fund will be depleted by this November.
