Burgas I was very excited to run across this DVD today, as I've been a King Crimson fan for quite some time. I wasn't looking to buy a DVD, music or otherwise, but how could I pass it up! It was $10 even, woo hoo. The good: * The music - The audio recording is of good quality. The performance seems a bit dry, but I haven't seen their other live shows so I can't really compare. Three of a Perfect Pair is an especially good version in my opinion. * The cover - Minimalist sumo basho scene.. I lived in Japan for a few years, so the King Crimson + Japan mix appeals to me. Why am I talking about the cover? You'll find out when I get to: The BAD. Okay folks, here's where it gets really, really nasty. * Navigation - There are zero menus, chapters, or titles. It's just one long video with an annoying pre- play video promoting Woodstock Tapes. Even a CD allows you to skip tracks, this DVD does not. You have to fast forward through to find the song you want. * Camera work - nonexistent. It just cuts through a few stationary cameras and fades between them. Someone thought it'd be fun to shake one of them during "jammy" moments for dramatic effect. The entire video is just a nonstop and mechanical fade/fade/fade between people in the band. * Video quality - oh man. This is the absolute worst. The film is *extremely* grainy and the contrast is poor, so that black areas actually look snowy grey. In addition, the encoding quality is very very low, so that the entire video is covered in blocky vertical stripes. They've possibly upscaled the resolution from a lower res source tape. To make things even worse, they've applied a heavy haze filter to the entire thing so it appears as if you're watching a soap opera love scene through the entire show, and color is exaggerated so that the band members have multicolored splotches over them the whole time. On top of all of these video problems, they put a black "WT" (Woodstock Tapes) watermark in the upper left that is present through the entire video. In short, if you just want to listen to the music and you find this DVD at a heavily reduced rate, it's worth getting. If you want a good King Crimson video to *watch*, however, I'd say pass on this one.
