Printmakers Presspack
THE PRINTMAKERS “In the old days, this band would have had the words “All-Stars” in their name. Every one of them is a leading figure in British contemporary jazz. Together, they create 10 evocative sound-pictures of places and times. It’s remarkable how just five instruments and voice can suggest space and depth as they do.” Dave Gelly, The Observer The word supergroup is common currency, especially in the rock world. Jazz, of course, has its fair share of supergroups too. Sometimes, one supergroup comes along that really is very special indeed. The Printmakers is such a group. The group formed at the instigation of Steve Mead at The Manchester Jazz Festival several years ago and since then has gone from strength to strength. Award winning Nikki Iles is one of the heroines of British jazz. She has made an invaluable contribution to the jazz scene in this country and beyond, while also making a very personal musical statement in many groups, not least her own superb Anglo-American trio with Rufus Reid and Jeff Williams. Grammy nominated and ECM recording artist Norma Winstone MBE, pioneering innovator of the voice, has been a leading light in European music for many years. She collaborated with Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor in Azimuth, described by Richard Williams as “one of the most imaginatively conceived and delicately balanced of all contemporary chamber jazz groups“. She has also worked with Fred Hersch, Steve Swallow, Jimmy Rowles, Mike Gibbs and Ralph Towner. She has had a resurgence recently, with three superb award winning ECM releases in collaboration with European musicians, Klaus Gesing and Glauco Venier. -

His music practice began in his teens playing in rockabilly and garage bands, as well as busking in the London Underground. Whilst working as a library assistant he learnt music theory from books and then went on to study at North Down College, Bretton Hall, Birmingham Conservatoire and Ulster University. “Sid Peacock is already one of the most exciting composers in that difficult-to-define area between jazz, -con temporary music and improv. His original take on big band jazz is the one that predominates and there is always in his music an energy and groove that makes it both accessible and attention holding. One can hear the influence of Django Bates’ writing for Loose Tubes, Delightful Precipice and StoRMChaser, but with other other influences from contemporary composers such as Brian Irvine and an ability to create wild and quirky big band improvisations, Sid Peacock’s is a truly original voice. -

Perhaps, as Prial suggests, Hammond’s relationship to the Vanderbilts did him more good in his early years in music than his social skills. There are questions unanswered and undeveloped in this biography related to Hammond the man, such as his falling out with Aretha Franklin or his quick parting with Dylan. Each chapter of this book comes (another assault on your pocketbook) with a wonderful ‘‘discography’’ that should slow down the pace of reading but will contribute to a great start in building a library of American music of the 20th century. It is quite something how much music Hammond had a role in, and this portion of the book is an important reminder of the times and genres Hammond touched. As with all biographies there are problems and limitations. For those of us raised in the second half of the century, The Producer fails to deliver the same magic surrounding the discovery and signing of ‘‘our’’ heroes as it does around the early stars. -
Complete Recordings, Starless, Road to Red, on [And Off) the Road and Thrak Box: Live and Studio Recordings 1994–1997
The making of virtual space in the King Crimson Box sets Larks tongues in as- pic: Complete recordings, Starless, Road to Red, On [and off) the Road and Thrak Box: Live and Studio Recordings 1994–1997 Toivo Burlin, Stockholm University When the founding fathers of progressive rock, British (-American) group King Crimson, pro- duced their groundbreaking LP In the Court of the Crimson king in 1969, they established an ec- lectic yet recognizable style, with a strong musical and production virtuosity. Continuing for four decades, they became the only band of its generation to continually developing and ex- panding it’s style and techniques. Their music is not easily categorized: from the advanced rock music inspired by modern jazz and art music on the first four LP albums – and a lot of changes in the band personnel and set up of instruments – the music developed in the mid 1970’s to a dynamic, experimental hard rock with an art music attitude, containing sound worlds of percussion, violins and softer melodic elements blended with heavy, rhythmically complex, asymmetrical guitar riffs: The albums Larks tongues in aspic (1973), Starless and bible black (1974) and Red (1974) was highly influential. When the band was reformed with partly new musicians in 1981, they arrived with a different, of New wave and minimalism, influenced style. In a short span of three years, 1981–1984, they released albums Discipline, Beat and Three of a perfect pair, and reformed once more in 1994 to release the CD Thrak. Importantly, in the same period they managed to take total creative and commercial control of all their recorded output, and it put them in a uniquely strong independent artistic position, connected to their loyal followers. -
