Clara Wing-chung Ho FUSHI: THE SECOND SEX AND THE THIRD SEX IN TRADITIONAL CHINA* A Double Meaning of Fushi If we borrow the Western concept to describe women as the second sex in Chinese history,1 then eunuchs could certainly be understood as the third sex.2 The third sex was an artificial one. It was the first sex, male, aiming to ensure the chastity of the second sex, who created a third sex. Employing biological, psychological and historical analysis, it explains how the men-women relation was compared to the master-slave relation. The book was soon trans- lated into many languages and became a major and well-known reference on gender studies in the second half of the 20th century. -

6 Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Negotiator: What Chinese Characters Have to Offer Negotiation Pedagogy Andrew Wei-Min Lee* Editors’ Note: In a project that from its inception has been devoted to second generation updates, it is instructive nonetheless to realize how much we have to learn from the past. We believe Lee’s chapter on Chinese characters and their implications for negotiation is groundbreaking. With luck, it will prove to be a harbinger of a whole variety of new ways of looking at our field that will emerge from our next round of discussion. Introduction To the non-Chinese speaker, Chinese characters can look like a cha- otic mess of dots, lines and circles. It is said that Chinese is the most difficult language in the world to learn, and since there is no alpha- bet, the struggling student has no choice but to learn every single Chinese character by sheer force of memory – and there are tens of thousands! I suggest a different perspective. While Chinese is perhaps not the easiest language to learn, there is a very definite logic and sys- tem to the formation of Chinese characters. Some of these characters date back almost eight thousand years – and embedded in their make-up is an extraordinary amount of cultural history and wisdom. * Andrew Wei-Min Lee is founder and president of the Leading Negotiation Institute, whose mission is to promote negotiation pedagogy in China. Rooted and Rootless Pluralist Approaches to Truth: Two Distinct Interpretations of Wang Chong’S Account
Comparative Philosophy Volume 6, No. 1 (2015): 149-168 Open Access / ISSN 2151-6014 www.comparativephilosophy.org CONSTRUCTIVE ENGAGEMENT DIALOGUE (1.2) ROOTED AND ROOTLESS PLURALIST APPROACHES TO TRUTH: TWO DISTINCT INTERPRETATIONS OF WANG CHONG’S ACCOUNT BO MOU In this article, I suggest a distinct “pluralist” interpretation of Wang Chong’s account while engaging McLeod’s “pluralist” interpretation (McLeod 2011); my interpretation is essentially a substantial extension of my previously suggested general account of truth (Mou 2009) in view of relevant resources in classical Chinese philosophy as well as Wang Chong’s texts. In the following discussion, my strategy is this. First, I will positively suggest one interpretation of Wang’s account and explain how this interpretation is related to a general approach to the philosophical issue of truth, substantive perspectivism. Second, in view of the previous explanation, I will discuss my agreements and disagreements with McLeod, thus giving an engaging analysis of the two interpretations as two distinct pluralist approaches that I render respectively “rooted” and “rootless”. Third, I will give a brief examination of explanatory forces of the two interpretations in several connections. 1. It is a textual fact (as highlighted in McLeod 2011) that, in the classical text Lun- Heng, Wang Chong (王充 27-97? CE) in the Han dynasty comprehensively resorted to the general notion of shi (實 whose literal sense or basic by-default meaning is “actuality” or “reality”) and treated capturing shi (實) as one general thing to unify what underlines the adequacy of any accounts, both moral ones, where shi and its contrary xu (虛) (emptiness, the untrue or falsity) are pointed to respectively by the terms shi (是 right) and fei (非 wrong), and non-moral ones concerning the inclusive ________________________ MOU, BO: Professor, Department of Philosophy, San Jose State University, USA.
