Fang 方東美 (Fang Dongmei, 1899-1977) and Tang Junyi 唐君毅 (1909-1978), two of the most important Confucian thinkers in twentieth-century China, who appropriated aspects of the medieval Chinese Buddhist school of Huayan to develop a response to the challenges of ‘scientism’, the belief, widespread in their times, that quantitative natural science is the only valuable part of human learning and the only source of truth. As the status of Confucianism in China had declined from the mid-nineteenth century, non-Confucian ideas were appropriated by Chinese thinkers for developing responses to ‘scientism’, adopting the principle of fanben kaixin 返本開新 (going back to the origin and developing new elements). Buddhist ideas from a range of schools played an important role in this. Unlike other thinkers who turned to the schools of Consciousness-Only and Tiantai, Fang and Tang, for reasons of their own, saw the thought of the Huayan school as the apex of Buddhism and so drew on selected aspects to support and develop their own views. Fang regarded Huayan thought as a fine example of the idea of ‘harmony’, since in its vision of the perfect state all phenomena co-exist without contradiction. Interpreting the explanation of this given by Dushun 杜順 (557-640) in his own way, Fang argued that human beings are able to integrate physical, biological and psychic elements of the ‘natural order’ with values such as truth, beauty and goodness which belong to the ‘transcendental order’. He thus proposed that scientism’s view of humanity as matter could be incorporated without contradiction but also without excluding ‘non-scientific’ aesthetic, moral and religious values. By contrast, Tang stressed the characteristics of Huayan’s theory of ‘doctrinal classification’, as developed by Fazang 法藏 (643-712). Interpreting this to mean that different ideas could be applicable in different periods, Tang argued that the worldview of ‘scientism’ may indeed help solve problems in its own sphere, such as the desire for scientific development. Other paradigms, however, are preferable in discussing moral issues. In other words, this Buddhist theory allowed him to claim that both Confucianism and ‘scientism’ have their own value. Neither of them should be negated in principle. I argue that Fang’s and Tang’s selective appropriations of Huayan thought not only paid heed to the hermeneutical importance of studying ancient texts in order to be more responsive to modern issues, a concern hotly debated in the field of Chinese philosophical studies, but also helped confirm the values of Confucianism under the challenge of ‘scientism’. In short, by absorbing ideas from Huayan thought, both Fang and Tang, to different extents and in different ways, provided responses to the challenge of ‘scientism’ which gave a place to science without rejecting the importance of human faculties such as aesthetic appreciation and moral judgment or asserting the dominance of perception and cognition over other human faculties, the ultimate cause, as they saw it, of ‘scientism’. 7 DECLARATION I confirm that no portion of the work contained in this thesis has been submitted for any degree or qualification of this or any other university. IDEMA Biographical Memoirs of Fellows of the British Academy, XVII, 1–18 Posted 18 June 2018. © British Academy 2018 GLEN DUDBRIDGE Born in 1938 in Clevedon, Somerset, Glen Dudbridge attended Bristol Grammar School. Following his National Service, he read Chinese at Cambridge, where he was taught by H. C. Chang, who is probably best known for his substantial and densely annotated anthology of Chinese vernacular literature which appeared in 1973 as Chinese Literature: Popular Fiction and Drama (Edinburgh). He also greatly benefited from the expertise of Piet van der Loon, who would remain a major source of inspir­ ation throughout his life. As well as Chang, van der Loon must have drilled him in philology and bibliography. Following his years at Cambridge, Dudbridge continued his studies at the New Asia College in Hong Kong. In 1965, he was appointed as Lecturer in Modern Chinese at Oxford. Twenty years later, in 1985, he was made Professor of Chinese at Cambridge, but returned to Oxford in 1989 when he was appointed in the same function there. He served as Chair of the European Association of Chinese Studies from 1998 to 2002, and was a visiting professor at Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was elected a fellow of the British Academy in 1984 and was awarded an Honorary Membership of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1996. Following retire­ ment from his Oxford Chair, he remained actively involved in academic life and research.

    CONTRIBUTORS ARAKI KENGO is a graduate of Kyushu University and is now Professor of Chinese Philosophy in its Faculty of Letters, specializing in Sung-Ming thought and Bud- dhism. His principal works include Buddhism and Confucianism (Bukkyo to jukyo) (1963); and Studies in Ming Thought (Mindai shiso kenkyu) (1972). WILLIAM s. ATWELL is completing a doctorate in East Asian Studies at Princeton University with a dissertation on the scholar-official Ch'en Tzu-lung (1608-47). His particular interest is in the social and intellectual history of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century China. WING-TSIT CHAN is Professor Emeritus of Chinese Philosophy and Culture at Dartmouth College and Anna R. D. Gillespie Professor of Philosophy at Chatham College. Representative of his numerous works on Chinese philosophy are his Source Book in Chinese Philosophy (1963), his translation Instructions for Practical Living and Other Neo-Confucian Writings by Wang Yang-ming (1963), and his translation of Chu Hsi's Reflections on Things at Hand (1967). CHUNG-YING CHENG is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Hawaii and works in the fields of Chinese philosophy, comparative philosophy, and Ameri- can logical philosophy. He has published studies in classical Chinese logic, Con- fucianism, and Neo-Confucianism, including a book, Tai Chen's Inquiry into Goodness (1969). He is the founder and editor of the Journal of Chinese Philoso- phy and is currently working on a book dealing with the philosophies of Chu Hsi and Wang Yang-ming. EDWARD T. CH'IEN is a Ph.D. candidate at Columbia University and is working on a full-scale study of Chiao Hung to be entitled "The Late Ming Neo-Confucian Synthesis in Chiao Hung."     THE DIARY OF A MANCHU SOLDIER IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY CHINA The Manchu conquest of China inaugurated one of the most successful and long-living dynasties in Chinese history: the Qing (1644–1911). The wars fought by the Manchus to invade China and consolidate the power of the Qing imperial house spanned over many decades through most of the seventeenth century. This book provides the first Western translation of the diary of Dzengmeo, a young Manchu officer, and recounts the events of the War of the Three Feudatories (1673–1682), fought mostly in southwestern China and widely regarded as the most serious internal military challenge faced by the Manchus before the Taiping rebellion (1851–1864). The author’s participation in the campaign provides the close-up, emotional perspective on what it meant to be in combat, while also providing a rare window into the overall organization of the Qing army, and new data in key areas of military history such as combat, armament, logistics, rank relations, and military culture. The diary represents a fine and rare example of Manchu personal writing, and shows how critical the development of Manchu studies can be for our knowledge of China’s early modern history.
